Dipping a toe. I have some understanding of the most elementary fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, some practical physics and organic chemistry. I'd like to do a little passive learning if I can, with a view to learning programming later in life. We all see the same truth through a different paradigm, but sometimes math helps us better see and understand and convey the same thing. What a lovely backbone upon which to build a body of communication and thought. I treasure this server.

@stux@mstdn.social I'm not sure who needs to hear it, but they're probably reading this thread... #Obtanium is a really neat alternative to the Google Play Store: if I understand correctly, I give it the URL to the git repository, and it can fetch the app and monitor for updates; the security-conscious crowd like this because it reduces dependence on a third party (like Google or F-Droid). So far I've got about a quarter of my apps through it.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange Great point. I think this idea of migrating one's applications first and *then* the OS also applies to many hardware platforms. For example, degoogled android OS for mobile telephones. I've seen many people who tried to migrate OS first complain their apps didn't work, but those who had been gradually transitioning toward more privacy-respecting open-source apps before switching OS seemed to have a grand old time.

@darth@silversword.online #openBSD - to give some indication of how simple the installer is: I installed it myself and I'm using it as a daily driver, and I'm such a noob I haven't figured out how to mount a USB stick yet. Seems very secure indeed 😀 I managed easily to give it a GUI, office suite, web browsers, #freeCAD, #GIMP, #nextcloud client, & #flightGear. As a computer ignoramus, I'm really impressed by how easy it is. One day I will understand the disk partitioning too 😉
One cheap Chinese laptop worked fine except for the trackpad, another one has to be left overnight to boot up (the text-only installer boots swiftly so I guess it's most likely an X problem) and the WiFi card isn't recognised. Moral of the story: you'll probably have an easy life, but probably get a thinkpad if you want some degree of assurance.
It's like art to me: I don't understand it the way the artists that made it do, but when I see a system as carefully documented and thoughtfully constructed to be as elegant as technology seems to permit... Well, I feel like I know it when I see it!

I sympathise; I was trained to regard the word plane as describing a flat surface, or a tool for making such. But also, I tried reading Beowulf once and it was ruddy impossible. At some point I think we have to concede the fluidity of language. The annoying thing is that it is allllmost static in the human lifespan.

Speaking as a noob, I was amazed by how easy #openBSD was to install and get running with #xfce. I think my next bout of experimentation will be doing it with #KDE (the #nextcloud client for openBSD seems to offer integration with dolphin; KDE's file manager). The only thing I haven't got my head around is auto-mounting USB drives upon insertion. Perhaps antithetical to the sane security defaults for which openBSD is known, but there are lots of guides online for people wanting it :P damned if I can get them to work though!
*edited to add, if you want to run Virtual Machines on it, they have to be openBSD VMs; I only mention it because reading this quote was what made me read more about openBSD and then end up trying it... I know little about computers, but I've seen people make (indeed, I have worked with, and within) good systems and bad systems, and this sounded like someone who was really trying to make a good system... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19912394

@munin maybe "why is your average Joe more likely to die in a car accident than in a cage-fighting deathmatch?"
I suppose this assumes your interlocutor has some modest amount of wit to think it through, and of course they have to understand they're comparing something that's survived by 99.978% of participants (US motoring, lifetime risk) to something that's survived by 50% of participants (assuming one is only dumb enough to try a 1-on-1 deathmatch once in one's life). But you get the jist.
It's tricky because the person to whom you're explaining this is the sort of person who is trying to infer meaning from a string of statistically-interrelated word-fragments generated by an algorithm, and terrifyingly (to me at least), thinks the database of statistical-interrelationships of word-fragments has an understanding of the world. So my heart goes out to you, because you've chosen a real uphill struggle here. A worthy cause! But an uphill struggle.

Wow, interesting background. Yes. The more common error is saying "memory" and leaving the listener to guess from the context and amount described. The tricky thing, I find, is that as the rate of globalisation increases, and where English functions as a lingual franca, it is hard to begrudge those who don't speak English as a first language using words improperly. At that level I think "properly" is just whatever has an acceptable likelihood of arranging the neural pathways in my skull in the intended manner. No excuse for the rest of us, of course.

@randulo long shot, but would #BSD meet your Macbook needs? MacOS originated from BSD, I believe. #FreeBSD is probably the most popular of the BSDs, but #OpenBSD is probably the most lightweight/secure (if you can forgo Bluetooth).
It sounds like 4yrs ago it mostly worked: https://www.reddit.com/r/openbsd/comments/y3020e/still_looking_at_laptops_for_openbsd/

@ml no worries! Did some more digging: there are free providers if you want to have a play. https://nextcloud.com/sign-up/ when you're logged in as the user with administrative control, there's a little app-store with a variety of open-source apps you can run on your server, and one of them is for forms. https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/forms
(But also it's fun to browse all the other apps, some of them are super useful!)

C fits in G socket. The trick is to do it on an extension lead, turn a G plug upsidedown to use the ground pin to force open the little shutters, then bam! You can push the C plug into the remaining holes.
Obvs you'll want to make sure your C plug device can handle the G grid's voltage.

I concur. I would say it is a damning indictment of the system on many levels. I regret the cost of it to all concerned. At the risk of sounding silly, but I say it because it is the benchmark I try to use for myself, I do not think the actions of the police are driven by love.

Further, I must caution readers to great care in how they interpret this thoughtful and excellently written guidance. I note this 2011 article on the re-arrest of the Naked Rambler in Scotland: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-14649394
Being convicted of a crime, however egregiously wrongful the conviction, can be terribly inconvenient.
At any rate; the manner of protest of these ladies is tremendously elegant.

Good point! I was actually thinking of C. I forgot E has a ground pin. I leave ungrounding devices that're designed to be grounded to the more adventurous 🤪
This might work with E and F provided the dimensions of the plug don't get in the way of the inverted G plug... I've only used it with "flat" type C plugs.
