#AskFedi So, I fell off my bike - stupid mistake on my part - and broke my arm. I've now got a fair bit of unexpected free time while it heals and I'm quite restricted as to what I can do.
#Reading is still possible though, so long as it's ebooks on my phone. History and science nonfiction particularly, but will consider anything. Especially if it's available through BorrowBox from the library.

#BikeTooter query ... Does anyone here use a rain cape when #cycling?
Having got soaked again today collecting my veg box, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to buy one.
It would mainly be used for shopping trips and bike commuting (20-30 minute journeys) on a folding bike (a Viking EasyStreet). It would also need to cope with Welsh rain cos I live in #Abertawe!
Recommendations, anecdotes and alternative suggestions welcome 🤗
Please boost.

@wendythedruid@thistlenfern.org Green cauliflower leaves can be cooked like celery too. I've added ours to soups and stews, or thinly sliced into stir-fries.

Does anyone else here grow #microgreens and, if so, what method do you use?
I'm seeing several ideas across numerous websites and am not sure if it's best to use jars and daily water rinsing or to plant the seeds in compost? I have vague memories of using wet paper (kitchen roll?) for growing mustard & cress at school. Is that still 'a thing that works' or am I just showing my age?!
Advice welcome 🤗

@Hellybootwader@mastodon.scot Thank you Helena! Found them both on Kobo ( not BorrowBox sadly!) and they both look like reads I will enjoy 😀 Cheers for the recommendations!

@szakib@freeradical.zone I need a new rain coat anyway which is why I'm querying capes as a possible alternative. I'm not sure whether to just replace what I have or change the whole setup.
The trouble with my waterproof trousers is that they're not the easiest to cycle in, or to put on quickly when the rain comes down! And I do quickly get hot in them.

@EF@mastodon.bsd.cafe I think this (your first suggestion anyway 😉) could be the best way for me.

@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social Thank you for this info, it's helpful. I am concerned about the 'sail effect' because I'm a nervous enough cyclist already. I can see that aspect swiftly becoming a problem so that expensive new cape might just end up in the cupboard 😕
I just really dislike wearing waterproof over trousers.

@tommoree@mastodon.social I'm thinking this might be the best option for me too. I don't mind my legs getting rained on, but really don't like cycling in wet trousers. They cling a restrict my movements too much.

@doboprobodyne@mathstodon.xyz Thank you for the recommendation and the link!
I hadn't considered how it might increase my visibility. That's another aspect to factor in.

@enobacon@urbanists.social I've just been browsing through your #umbrellaBike posts. That does look neat!
I get what you mean about capes being good for just falling rain. Here it does tend to be a bit breezy too, although I can usually choose more sheltered routes.

@enobacon@urbanists.social Ah, that's good to know. I should probably try and find a shop where I could try on a few different makes.
Not being able to see the gear shifter could be a problem 🤔

@RadtkeJCJ@mastodon.scot We'd been talking about how hand signals would work under a cape - not that I am great at doing them, but I should at least practice!
Feeling like a sail does concern me. I think it might make me too nervous perhaps.

@RadtkeJCJ@mastodon.scot I'm quite tall so that might be a help - or just mean more cape to billow!

@denisbloodnok@mendeddrum.org It's fine, thank you, I understand your points. Good to know about the cape being a bit of a sauna in warm rain. I don't think I would appreciate that!
