I'm at Parkland College (for a few decades) helping folks navigate developmental courses/placements (but fighting the "hey, 5% of these folks could pass college so we should just get rid of developmental teaching" trends) dreaming of structured paths for building understanding *and* fluency instead of "I don't have time to teach you, here's a calculator."

@djuber@fosstodon.org @ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #bikeNite a6 similar Usually I'm commuting ;) When I'm focused enough to organize my stuff I'll have a multitool, a patch kit or two (they were swag for some things), which include tire levers and rubber cement and the roughing stuff... spare tube, and frame pump that you can flop down things so it stands and you can actually pump with it. C02 ... has never worked for me! If I could master the motor skill (and I'm usually good with stuff like that), I would carry it and offer to inflate saggy commuters. Today I was glad to have a clementine for that guy who said he was diabetic and somethign about wanting zingers.

@PhoenixSerenity@beige.party Today beginning my bike ride an older Black man with a strong accent pulled up in his car and greeted me and informed everybody present that his math skills had improved a lot because of me :) :) I love the idea that it obviously meant a lot to him. When we had to show our vax crd to get into the school, I sported a helmet with decorations and a headband and a rainbow elastic buff around head and neck. "You bring me joy when I see you!" the student said. How could that not be a favorite :) (I figured out that I can get away with being A Character and sitll do mymath tutoring ;)

@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social Today I took this and other pics of the intersection in our Gold Level Bike Friendly town that's *right by the city offices* and the saturday farmer's market and... and... ... and the light does not detect bicycles. I was told some years ago: "press the walk button1!!" Yea, hop the curb, dodge right turning traffic, find the ramp.... Tuesday a.m. I invoked the "dead red" law and squeezed across between cars. GRANTED it's busy enough usually there are cars that trigger the light. At that night's Bike/Pedestrian Advisory Commission meeting we were told that intersection is beig totally re-designed... goal for construction in 2029. I spoke of my issues and was told to send info b/c it's a different person responding. (This is also a "so dangerous it's safer!" intersection because nobody knows what they are supposed to do.)

I haven't touched in years that I bought from somebody who had hoarded hundreds of them and was selling them for $25. Then there's the one that really belongs to my friend (another Racer from 1969 but with 3 speeds). When the handlebar moustachioed Clay wafted the Bianchi Osprey to the back of my bike and balanced and bungeed like a superhero....it inspired me. Baby Bianchi (it's a tiny frame) had been abandoned in the bike shop since the previous century. So! The Dahon got donated to the bike project. The Gazelle ... welp, I am still trying to figure out how to get it apart but I THINK I FOUND A VIDEO. I just tried to put a shim around the 26.4 mm seatpost for Baby Bianchi (should be 26.6 mm) but ... couldn't get it on easily. Oh, then there is the huge tricycle that's the housemate's that doesn't work either.

It turns out the tire had a horizontal slit in it that did not show with normal inspection but when riding the slit would separate and suck in the tube and then squeeze it flat. So it wouldn't happen fast..

#bikeNite #bikeTooter Not working today but we just had a cloudburst. So I have a question for whenever: has anybody turned an old bike into a lawn ornament? I saw one that has the house number on it prominently and others with assorted flowers. I have limited craft abilities/ resources but sometimes that means I think of things others wouldn't :P I can't remember what I did w/ front wheel w/ dynamo hub (need to make sure it's not just Put SOmewhere but I hope I donated it to Bike Project or something). At a restaurant, bike buddy said I HAD TO COME OUT AND SEE .... a Gazelle parked outside!!! ALL THE FEATURES!!! I googled (this would bave been 2009ish?) ... NOPE not this side of pond. November day, I have impulse to drop in bike shop as I ride by, say hi, buy a tube. Fritz asks me, "have you eer heard of a Gazelle?" I stop. "I have heard of a Gazelle. I have seen a Gazelle. I have LUSTED AFTER A GAZELLE." Fritz indicates behind me, where a young man stands with a Gazelle. (Not the same one.) He's graduating & goin' back to the Netherlands. Fritz had just told him his asking price ($450) was good, he just "needed to find the right person" and that's literally when I walked in. SELF: when youget the urge to go into a place, go! I wonder if I had perceived the outline... Now to the evening visit which usually means I"m not back in time for bikenite proper.

For some reason the bike shop put glow in the dark ones on ;) Teh old fashioned "glow in the dark" that holds the light for a while (I had a rosary and two cute tiny "lamps" that would do it too). I don't know how long they'd last, though. I LUV LUV LUV my redshift pedals, though. They do not eat my shoes, *and* to my delight they don't get slimy when they get wet. Oh, and they have USB port lights, front and back for each pedal, either solid or blinky.... and they adapt so front facing they're white and rear is red. I pop out the light cells on weekends to recharge but you can still ride without them. Since the pedals are blinking, it's obvious you are a moving thign, not a mailbox.
