RE: https://mathstodon.xyz/@TeaKayB/117336808723747844 My Polish language copy of *The Mathematicians' Library* will soon be winging its way to a school in Leicestershire because a maths teacher thought it'd be great for some of their students whose first language is Polish! This is exactly the kind of use I'd hoped these non-English versions would get, and I have three more left to send (1 *Japanese*, 1 *German*, 1 *Spanish*) - for free (including UK postage) - to anyone who would make similarly good use of them. Send me a private message if you'd like one of the remaining three (specifying which language, of course, and what you intend to do with it)! [And whether you're requesting one or not, a share would be most appreciated in order to help them find their new homes!] #MathsToday #Maths #History #Books #MFL #bookstodon

I've got one copy of *The Mathematicians' Library* to give away in each of four languages: Polish, German, Japanese, and Spanish. I'm offering them for free (including UK postage) & I'd like them to go somewhere that'd make good use of them. If you think *your* organisation or group would find one of these useful or interesting, please drop me a private message, tell me which language you'd like, and how you'd use it! Otherwise, *please share this offer far and wide* so that it can reach someone who would appreciate one of them! I'm not looking for suggestions of people/groups to get in touch with: I'm looking to give them to people who are interested enough to request a copy directly! #MathsToday #Maths #History #MFL #Books #bookstodon

What's the correct interpretation this statement? "There exists a positive number 𝑥 such that for every positive number 𝑦, we have 𝑦²=𝑥." Is it ∃𝑥,∀𝑦[𝑦²=𝑥] or is it ∀𝑦,∃𝑥[𝑦²=𝑥] My (beginner) vote is for the first one ∃𝑥,∀𝑦[𝑦²=𝑥] #maths #quantifiers

Users from the #Netherlands - do you remember, or have you heard of, the mnemonic "Meneer Van Dalen Wacht Op Antwoord"? I have been googling for information about this but am looking for more sources, preferably original textbooks from the 20th century. I can find quite a few references to it but only *after* it was already phased out. Let me know if you remember, are interested and/or can help! I must confess up front I do not speak #dutch ! #nederland #wiskunde #math #maths #mathematics

"Before the introduction of the Arabic notation, multiplication was difficult, and the division even of integers called into play the highest mathematical faculties. Probably nothing in the modern world could have more astonished a Greek mathematician than to learn that, under the influence of compulsory education, the whole population of Western Europe [...] could perform the operation of division for the largest numbers." – Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) #quote #mathematics #math #maths

What is your answer to 18÷3x2=? Boosts appreciated No, this isn't a trick question. An oft-cited blog has made the claim that "most humans" will get the wrong answer, which I think is a completely ridiculous claim, so I want hard data on the split. Unlike some other polls I've run, I want #teachers and #students to answer also, since you all come under "most humans" :-) #Mathematics #Maths #Math #arithmetic #OrderOfOperations #poll #education #school

Cannot get my head around transform.basis rotations. As always, language is a barrier. What is a "basis"? What grounding does it have? Is there any meaning? I used to be quite good at maths, but never enjoyed matrices. Does anyone have a selection of resources for how to understand? #godot #gamedev #maths

Hello – an #introduction. I’ve long been watching the fedi and now finally join. Commons: strong opinions i may not reflect, linux, love-hate computers, #trans, probably #autistic, cat owner (no pics), socially weird. Less-commons: studying #maths in #Prague (but mess into software too). A little bit into music and languages as well. Easily socially exhausted, thus sorry if i don’t respond to anything. Also have trouble w/ social expectations and often will just not interact. #Czech #Praha

1/x #MathsMonday I'm coming back to #Mathematics order of operations (hopefully) one last time, just to flesh it out with some more #Maths textbook references, for those who want it (having only initially given one in each case). Not going overboard, just 4 #Math textbook screenshots per post (since Mastodon only allows 4 pics per post, that's a good number to finish it off with). I may come back in future, if some particularly good ones come along, hence unknown post count for now...

what if... one could construct a low precision #MandelbrotSet orbit corresponding to a specific high precision orbit, without doing any high precision calculations?

I'm experimenting with constructing "tuned" periodic orbits by a simple algorithm (cycle one orbit, replacing the periodic 0 with successive values from a second orbit; scaled by Julia size of the first orbit, then iterate backwards with Newton's method to fix it up to be less approximate)

seems to work in some simple cases, in other cases the refinement pushes it to a wrong orbit*, so I think my initialization is wrong. plotting the images after each step of Newton refinement shows it takes some bonkers path instead of moving smoothly from the approximate to the accurate....

  • e.g. in attached video I specified to go to the same side relative to the mini each time, but it doesn't do that...
