So, my move to a BSD isn't going as quickly as I would like, and I wanted to get off of Debian since the whole vote to go pro-AI debacle. I figured moving to a Linux distribution that has a very strong anti-AI policy would be the right choice until I can get a BSD installed properly on my desktop or extra laptop. More than a year ago, I tried @elementary@mastodon.social. It's an awesome project but I could never get my workflow working with the desktop environment. Most definitely not the fault of Elementary. I just have a weird workflow. Earlier today, I decided to give the latest release another try. I'm going to keep it on here and actually work with the desktop environment, instead of giving up after a day. The project is staunchly anti-AI. And that is important to me. I know the Linux kernel is tainted but unless we want to fork the kernel from a version prior to Torvalds allowing the use of AI, we're just going to have to deal with it. I don't like it, but I'm no developer and who in the world would want to take on a forked project as big as the Linux kernel? Yikes! Anyway, I'm really liking how I have Elementary setup on my ThinkPad T14 and I'm going to keep using it for now. Who knows? It might keep me on Linux with one piece of my hardware even after moving to BSD. #linux #bsd #elementary_OS #noAI

Finally, the talk delivered a refreshingly critical take on how AI is disrupting the cybersecurity landscape. While AI tools can help seasoned security pros, they’ve also unleashed a massive wave of "AI slop" low-effort, AI-generated vulnerability reports submitted by internet users chasing CVE clout. OpenBSD maintainers are now burning days analyzing hallucinated security risks, non-exploitable compiler behaviors, and broken "reproducers" that don't even send valid network packets. Instead of actually making software safer, unvetted AI bug hunting is currently bogging down maintainers in endless administrative noise. #openbsd #bsd #eurobsdcon #EuroBSDCon2026

@thesupertechie@lgbtqia.space you might be better off with #BSD as the #linux kernel will now use AI. AFAIK.

With host-side SEV support, multi-core virtualization, and networking now functional in bhyve, the team is working on upstreaming the code to the main FreeBSD repository.

Future milestones include upgrading to newer SEV generations like SEV-ES for encrypted CPU register states and SEV-SNP for hardware memory integrity protection as well as updating the FreeBSD kernel to run seamlessly as an encrypted guest OS using memory C-bit handling and bounce buffers.

And for you, mere mortal, what does all of this actually mean? It means true cloud privacy without having to blindly trust anyone. Whether you're hosting sensitive customer data, financial workloads, or proprietary algorithms, confidential computing ensures that not even your cloud provider or a rogue admin with full root access can peek into your running memory.

By bringing AMD SEV to FreeBSD, top-tier, silicon-enforced protection stops being an exclusive enterprise luxury and becomes part of the open-source toolkit.

Bottom line: your data is finally locked down in transit, at rest, and right down to the hardware while in use.

Okay, tomorrow I will be back to work trying to get @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org installed either on my desktop or laptop. I took a break for a week but I really need to get this done. After 30 years, I think I am done with Linux. I'm struggling to move on, but I know it's the right thing to do. For my small home server, I'm not sure what to install on it just yet. I know that I can get FreeBSD going rather quickly but there's the AI issue. Would NetBSD be a good option for the server, as well? #netbsd #bsd #noAI

If you were unable to attend EuroBSDCon 2026 in Brussels, or had to choose between parallel sessions, you can now see the talks directly from the talk descriptions on the program page https://events.eurobsdcon.org/2026/schedule/ or peertube: https://exquisite.tube/c/ebc2026/videos @eurobsdcon #eurobsdcon #bsd #openbsd #netbsd #freebsd #unix #unixlike #freesoftware #libresoftware

Ah yes, an #introduction is definitely in order after a yearish long hiatus followed by a switch in instance! We're DECSystem10, though sinza is a convenient singular entity that we tend to use I as. We are a #plural collective who has grown increasingly disillusioned with generative AI (and is in fact a huge part of why I switched instances). I enjoy #retrocomputing and find that #NetBSD is awesome! In general I prefer #BSD to Linux actually. I enjoy getting old computers to talk to each other, as well as alternatives to the web where possible like #Gopher . #Gemini, and #Spartan! #GeminiProtocol #PluralGang

So, yeah. Another #EuroBSDCon is behind us, and we're sad to leave. It has been incredible meeting all the old farts and new hopefuls - more of the latter than ever, I think! Great talks in all tracks - including the hallway one. Even some conspiracies for good, which is always fun. There were too many highlights to mention, so I'll just shout a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to making this a fantastic experience - again. On a personal note I ask/hope those of you who said hi at the conf can reach out and remind me who you are, so I can connect faces to handles on here. I suck at remembering so you'll have to forgive me for some of the bewildered looks I'm sure I gave some of you. (After that last pic I was afraid someone would arrest us - drinking that beer from paper cups must be an affront to the locals..) #EuroBSDCon2026 #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #BSD #Retrocomputing
