We’re #hiring a Program Manager to lead our #SovereignTechResilience Program!
In this role, you’ll take hands-on ownership of one of our key programs dedicated to protecting critical #opensource infrastructure. The program includes investments in security audits, memory safety, and post-quantum encryption readiness.
We’re looking for someone with a technical background who can balance the operational demands of a program already in motion with an impact-oriented, strategic perspective.

Open source maintainers build the critical digital infrastructure the world relies on, and open standards define how that infrastructure functions across systems. When the people who implement these technologies help write the standards, this results in better, more secure, and more interoperable technology: improving both our daily digital lives and our ability to understand and adapt technology.

From internet routing and web protocols to accessibility, digital payments, encryption, federated social platforms, and electric vehicle charging, the technologies they maintain underpin the digital systems we rely on every day.

At #OSPOsforGood Day at #UNOpenSourceWeek, Policy and Research Lead Paul Sharratt spoke to a standing-room-only audience on the panel “Financing Open Source and Digital Public Goods: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach.”
Paul made the case for why open source infrastructure requires dedicated public investment. Critical open source is a classic market failure. The software provides enormous economic and social value, but private actors have little incentive to invest in maintaining it:

We believe that meaningful support for the people who shape open standards directly strengthens the digital infrastructure we all depend on.
This pilot program enables open source maintainers to participate in standards development at @ietf@mastodon.online @w3c@w3c.social or ISO with financial support, training, and mentoring.
The call for applications is open until 19 May 2026.
Find all information and details about how to apply on our website: https://www.sovereign.tech/programs/standards

The pilot program bridges this gap by supporting a cohort of open source maintainers to participate in standards work at the @ietf @w3c and ISO. It provides training, mentoring, compensation, onboarding and on-site meetings at standards development organizations.
Applications for the first cohort are open until 19 May 2026.

Too often, the maintainers who build, test, and operate open source software aren't part of standards development, even though these standards directly shape their work.
The result? A structural risk to our digital infrastructure, as standards can become more difficult to implement or misaligned with the public interest.

For the fourth year in a row, we took part in UN Open Source Week in New York City. In addition to hosting this year’s maintain-a-thon as well as a breakfast reception in the German House, we contributed across multiple sessions, including panels at OSPOs for Good and community-led side events.

A bread recipe written without bakers may list the right ingredients but still fail in practice. The same is true for technical standards: when the people who create, test, and maintain #OpenSource software are absent from standards development, the results can become impractical or misaligned with the public interest.
The #SovereignTechStandards network supports open source maintainers to participate in standards development at IETF, W3C, & ISO with financial support, training, & mentoring. 2/

For the ISO track in particular, this collaboration brings DIN's deep institutional knowledge directly to the experts we support, helping bridge the gap between open source practice and standards processes.
Together, we are working towards having open source implementation experience as an integral part of the processes that shape digital infrastructure.

#UNOpenSourceWeek has been a timely moment to discuss how open source software, open standards, and digital public goods can be better governed, funded, and sustained as shared digital infrastructure.
We’re therefore very pleased that the Internet Governance Forum’s Multistakeholder Advisory Group has approved a new Policy Network on Open Digital Infrastructure for the 2026 IGF cycle.

@elettrona Accessibility is already an active topic in open standards, most notably Web Accessibility under the W3C, but also comes up in other standards development organizations (SDOs). We encourage and welcome maintainers of open source accessibility infrastructure who want to engage with an SDO to apply. Please share with your communities!
