I'm reading this right now and I believe it to be the most important book on this topic ever published. I'm reading it thanks to Libby and my library. I think you should try to gift to anyone who is worried about robots making us extinct. Anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of Magic (my personal substitute for AI) should read this. The authors have done a great service to us all by writing this thoughtful analysis.

@futurebird@sauropods.win It would already be good if anyone trying to reach an audience created a presence on the Fediverse AND of course, told people about it repeatedly, flaunting the advantages of independent distributed networks. I still have a Twitter account with my Mastodon address visible in my handle. I don't post there, though because it's trash as is Instagram.

Yes, it's happening, not just social but all media is being bought and run by people who want to be in charge. Their agenda is to transform society via their control and it's frightening AF.

Over thirty years of original music compositions are available at https://randulo.com for free listening or download. If you want to donate, do so for the Internet Archive. I did, and will again. It's an impostant record as history is being erased and rewritten.

@andycarolan@social.lol In all fairness, some people just want to read "news & views". Not everyone has something to say (yes, I swear) and in that case I'm glad they just read.
But of course this is a social network and being social is definitely a part of it.

The Decree was published on 27 May 2025 and reflects the intentions of the French government for increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves to form an integral part of the risk assessment and prevention measures that must be taken by employers.

You make an interesting point. We have the technology to stream live video (with audio for those who just listen) performances, many are already doing it. Federating those events might bring a radical change to things.

@kevinrns@mstdn.social @pascaline@mastodon.nl Went out for a walk this evening and had to turn back because of the smoke in the air! Hoping for (predicted) rain tonight. We haven't owned a motor vehicule in decades and do not do intercontinental flights (due to other reasons). This shit is getting personal, and we do our part.

@sknob@mamot.fr @conniptions@mastodon.social @fairplayer@social.anartist.org Red flag for me, but I dunno, some may be good with it. I don't quite get the model, but the real problem, as you probably know, is that there's no Bandcamp competitor with the larger audience. As each new site comes online, the audience is fragmented more. In the case of Ampwall, they are (or were) big on metal, so maybe a focus on genre could help.

3/ I have to stop this, I've written extensively about my views on the current situation, AI, streaming, etc. Most of what I say revolves around the following.
- The world is flooded with music and all art, thanks to the ease with which it can be "produced" (as opposed to "created"!).
- In the first half of my career, people bought albums, put on headphones or quality audio systems, smoked a J and listened.

EDIT: Plus I didn't register the title's important word: Passengers!

@drewph@ieji.de @dfx4509b @lydiaschoch@mastodon.social Yes, in many countries, the Meta properties are the Internet via their apps. It's unfortunate, but there's no solution at this time. I also detest cities and consulates using those properties, and they COULD afford a site.

@MLE_online There are many examples of this. Useability isn't tested, some dev just does what they think it should be (their preference).

What do we want?
Universal health insurance that covers life-threatening diseases (cardio, cancer...) 100% and mostly all medical expenses for the rest.
Basic income that would reduce crime committed, not for fun, but to feed a family
Safe shelter for all.
When do we want it?
It's complicated.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange You are correct, usability studies have shown that it's common to scan, not read, text on web sites and apps. As for a post that annoys, I would generally move on, unless there's something pertinent that I'm in a strong position to bring to the table.

"only read more closely if the text is actually interesting and insightful."
Read closely to see what the statement you are responding to was. We do scan ^H^H^H skim, and if I can't find what I'm looking foir quickly, I leave. But the OP is talking about replying to a post. Many people are not used to reading carefully. Another example that has ruined us is ToS. Who reads those whole things?

Last week, I gave two talks in Madison, Wi.
Here is what I had to say:

It was my first time in Wisconsin. The weather was perfect, the lakes were beautiful, and the Verona Public Library is an amazing building.

More on "everything is evil"; a positive thought.
Yes, not only is the Internet enshitified, but businesses and most of the world needs a reset.
What has not changed in my observation, is people. That is face to face interaction. I walk everywhere, we have no car, or, I take public transportation. I meet with friends as often as possible.
We are subjected 24/7 to malaise on the Internet. Understandable, but not healthy.
People are a remedy, even a smile exchanged on the street is golden.
