You know, I'm not a vegan, but the arguments against veganism often strike me as extraordinarily weak. Like the strongest ones are about cost and wherewithal. But the usual arguments are hear are often naturalistic fallacy in different disguises, or an elaborate version of calling vegans a bunch of sissies. Or variations on "but aren't you a hypocrite for not [meeting impossible standard]?"

It's funny. I'm generally a pretty happy person, but I just turned in the manuscript for Sawyer Lee 2, and honestly every time I turn in a book I feel this mix of uncomfortable giddyness and I sort of temporary despair. Hard to describe. I should probably spend a week gardening or something, but alas, in order to get my last 4 manuscripts in on time I had to burn down everything else! I am personally very interested in mathematicians right now as a kind of vanguard for ai-based replacement of intellectual labor. If you haven't kept up, regular consumer-facing ai has now resolved a number of important open problems, and the pace appears to be picking up.

Hey linguistic dorks: So, I grew up in Texas where "y'all" was normal, though not always used when outside the US South. In the last 10-20 years, it seems like it's become normal. Like I see Canadians using it. But it occurred to me that I *actually* only see it used online. I had the impression that Y'all basically won the Second Person Plural wars via the popularity of AAVE, but perhaps it's more of an online slang usage?

This week I'm having that thing that every writer knows about where I spent days banging my head on a plot elements only to feel like I got nowhere. And, of course, experience suggests you MUST do this, because it's the only way to get your subconscious off its ass full of glial cells to organize some solutions while you sleep. But I wish you could just zap it some how instead of all the frustration.

Like people often remark on how really old recipes tend to use vague quantities. But in my experience the best way to cook is to write down a recipe and then adjust it to your kitchen and the tastes of your family. So, numbers beyond a general range aren't that important, other than as a sort of default setting.

Do you think of LLMs came out in, say 2003, the major players would've allowed nsfw mode? Like to my knowledge there was never serious pushback on search engines indexing basically anything legal, even if it was deeply offensive. Is that a culture shift or is it more about how an LLM feels like a human being, rather than a mindless indexer.

@mayintoronto It's funny--my wife is from Ohio and says folks as if it's precisely synonymous with people. That is, it's totally neutral. But for me, saying "folks" is strictly for non-professional contexts. Like I wouldn't say "folks who work in accounting."
