Hiiii! After unexpectedly finding myself without a job for the first time in my professional career, I am looking for a new role effective immediately - one where I can do good, period. 🌟 PREFERRED ROLES (non-exhaustive!): ▪️Writer: technical, reports, newsletters, deep dives, articles ▪️Teacher/tutor: #German, #linguistics, language study; data analytics & literacy, #statistics ▪️Coach: #academia to what’s beyond; personal development; organization; task & project management; app setups & ecosystems ▪️Data analyst / data scientist ▪️Researcher / policy #analyst 🏢 PREFERRED INDUSTRIES & AREAS: ▪️Non-profit/not-for-profit & #advocacy. Broadly speaking: more just, sustainable, more good ▪️Tutoring, coaching, education (software, tools, instruction), academia ▪️Civic good, municipal affairs, local journalism, urbanism, environment/ecology ▪️Small tech/tech for good, FOSS/FLOSS, privacy, digital sovereignty ▪️Disaster management/prevention, emergency operations (I have work, volunteer, and/or education/training experience in all of these categories - happy to share more!) 💪🏼 I’LL BE A FANTASTIC FIT IF: ▪️You suspect there’s a story in a heap of #data, but don’t know what it is - or how to coax it out. I’ll find it for ya. ▪️You need great visuals and tailored communication for any audience: clear academic reports, engaging tech newsletters, gentle introductions to complex topics, keynotes - I love ‘em all. ▪️You need someone to dig deep. I naturally follow up on every “huh, that’s odd - let me see what’s really going on there!” ▪️You want a critical thinker who gives honest advice. You’ll get the real deal. ▪️You like saying what you mean and talking to each other like real people. I can speak corporate, but I’d prefer leaving that seven-layer dip of jargon behind! ▪️Bonus: You suspect corporate AI may soon be unaffordable for most organizations, or the bubble may burst, and need someone who can do excellent work without chatbot crutches if needed. ⛔️ NOT LOOKING FOR: ▪️Roles where I’m expected to rubber-stamp work, go through the motions, or “put the data fries in the bag.” ▪️Cultures where manufactured emergencies are the norm and there’s no time to think, explore, or dig deep. ▪️Jobs where you can’t tell me what good I’ll do or where my positive impact will be. 🖥️ PREFERRED SETTING: ▪️Remote, flexible hours ▪️Contracts/project work; very open to a portfolio-style career ▪️Hybrid or “we get together sometimes” roles in the #Edmonton area ▪️I’m not chasing the corporate ladder; impact matters more. If it’s a good fit, I don’t care whether it comes with a “Senior” label. #boostOK, and if you do, I’ll send all the good vibes so there may never again be an unexpected item in your bagging area. 💜 Hiring, or know someone who is?

FediSuite 1.6.3Your Fediverse Management Platform FediSuite 1.6.3 is out. At its center is reach for public Fediverse posts. Likes, boosts, and replies show reactions, but not how many accounts likely saw a post. That's why FediSuite now calculates an estimated gross and net reach based on the FediWings model. Gross reach counts possible visibility through the author and boosters. Net reach subtracts out double counting. If the same account boosts several parts of a thread, it doesn't get counted multiple times in the total. FediSuite treats threads as one connected post instead of artificially inflating each segment. These are the details that turn a nice-looking number into a useful one. The calculation runs in the background for new and already imported posts. Older posts get their turn too, gradually. In the overview, the dashboard, and the top posts list, you can sort by net or gross reach. A badge links directly to the methodology page. It explains how the formula works, what it's based on, and where its limits are. Reach is an estimate, not an oracle. That's exactly why the explanation belongs right next to the number, not in some blog post nobody finds. It's worth reconnecting your own Fediverse accounts in FediSuite, so that every post actually gets imported at full length. Then it takes a bit of patience: gross and net reach are only calculated after the historical import finishes, and then in small intervals. It can take an hour or two before all the reach numbers are available. Along the way, 1.6.3 cleans up quite a bit: the time axes on the growth charts finally stick to the selected period, import progress shows its actual phase, and post rows can now be expanded. When fetching reach data, FediSuite now caps concurrent requests per instance at six. A full queue now drains much faster, without flooding small remote instances with requests. There were also, of course, plenty of smaller changes and fixes under the hood: Proper UI scaling from 720p to 4K.Historical data import now shows a coloured progress bar. There's a new "Credits" page, linked in the footer. There's a new "Methodology" page, linked as a badge on every reach calculation.Follower charts fixed. And much more! https://www.fedisuite.com #fedisuite #fediverse #analytics #statistics #mastodon #friendica #peertube #pixelfed #loops #pleroma #misskey

Hello, I’m Tarvo, a geneticist by training who somehow ended up spending most of his working life at the intersection of medicine, data, hospital IT and digitalisation. These days, my scientific work often means helping clinicians make sense of their data, while my day job is increasingly about preparing a hospital for a future in which AI will simply be part of medicine — whether institutions are ready for it or not. I joined FediScience because I miss thoughtful scientific conversation. I’m particularly interested in AI, medicine, genetics, statistics, mathematics, open science and the wonderfully messy question of how we actually integrate new technology into real-world healthcare. I’m here to learn, exchange ideas, occasionally ask stupid questions, and hopefully contribute something useful in return. Say hello — recommendations for interesting people to follow are very welcome. #Introduction #NewHere #Science #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Medicine #HealthTech #DigitalHealth #Genetics #Statistics #Mathematics #OpenScience #Research #MedMastodon #AcademicMastodon #Neuhier

John Tukey the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) inventor, who coined both "bit" and "software" died exactly 26 years ago today. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), one of the most important algorithms in signal processing and data analysis, was introduced by Tukey & Cooley in 1965. In 1805, Gauss - studying the orbits of asteroids Pallas and Juno - came up with a method to interpolate their trajectories from discrete samples. What he came up with was mathematically very close to the modern FFT but Gauss never published that work, and didn’t analyze its computational complexity. It predated even Fourier’s 1822 work on heat diffusion - but without the framing or generalization that Cooley & Tukey would bring 160 years later. In 1965, Cooley & Tukey published their now-famous algorithm that reduced the cost of computing a Discrete Fourier Transform from 𝑂(𝑛²) to 𝑂(𝑛 log⁡𝑛). This leap made real-time signal processing and digital media compression feasible. From radio telescopes to JPEGs, from audio codecs to quantum mechanics - the FFT is everywhere. It’s one of the most important (and elegant) algorithms of the 20th century - rooted in the genius of Gauss, but brought to life in the computer age. #JohnTukey #FastFourierTransform #FFT #SignalProcessing #ComputerScience #Mathematics #Algorithm #DataScience #DigitalSignalProcessing #FourierTransform #ComputationalScience #ScientificComputing #HistoryOfScience #Innovation #CarlFriedrichGauss #JosephFourier #JamesCooley #STEM #Engineering #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #QuantumComputing #ImageProcessing #AudioProcessing #Statistics #TechHistory #Computing #Science #InnovationLegacy #OnThisDay
