NEW: Emma Joyce died at 3 years old. The next year, her sister Ava Joan died. Then their brother died from the same complication of untreated diabetes that killed Ava Joan. Later, a fourth sibling died. Their parents believed in prayer, not medicine. https://www.propublica.org/article/idaho-faith-healing-multiple-deaths?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mastodon-post#News #Idaho #Religion #Law #Medicine #Health #Children #Family

Four Kids in One Faith-Healing Family Died. Authorities Could Do Nothing.

An exemption in Idaho law shields faith-healing parents from criminal prosecution for conduct that otherwise would be charged as neglect. It also keeps police and social workers from stepping in to protect a dead child’s surviving siblings.

I've become cynical about the theology surrounding atoning for sins by afflicting oneself and praying communally for forgiveness, i.e., about #YomKippur, which is today. I've come to believe more and more that, as Karl Marx said, religion is the opium of the masses. I think Yom Kippur is performative for most people. I don't think observing it leads most people to change for the better; I think it just makes them feel better about continuing to behave the same way. #religion #Judaism 1/?

From David Brockman: One out of every 17 Texans belongs to a #religion other than Christianity, and over 25% don't identify with any religious tradition at all. The new curriculum, which goes into effect 2030, isn't inclusive of any of these residents. https://www.texasobserver.org/state-bible-only-reading-list-disservice-texas-students/ #education #Texas #politics #news

The State's Bible-Only Reading List Is a Disservice to Texas Kids

A new required list doesn't meet the need to learn about the major religious traditions that make up Texas today—and it could impair public schools' ability to serve diverse populations.
