⚠️ DO NOT BUY: LG’s Spyware TVs, Monitors, and Wiretapping Concerns
The attached #video details the absolute #privacy horror of LG #television and #monitor products, that install #adware without consent, have #AI integration, and a horrible privacy policy..
LG recently forced upon us an app install loaded with #McAfee adware through a #Windows update. We found that this has been happening to tons of users, made worse by LG's shady history with #TV's that instruct buyers to inform house visitors of third-party microphones in their living room. At no point in the adware or application install did LG or Microsoft ask us for consent or permission to install the software and enable its various permissions. On monitors ranging 1 day old in our office to 3 years old, we've been able to replicate these issues -- including on the LG 34GX900A-B that we just bought (and have now returned, following #spyware concerns).
DO NOT BUY: LG’s Spyware TVs, Monitors, and Wiretapping Concerns
#Fediverse is a social network, right? About being different from corporate anti-social media. Has ambitions to be more diverse, inclusive, cohesive. To provide inter-community social networking where people with similar interests find each other and interact.
Like the #ActivityPub developer community, for instance. The group of people who make all this possible in the first place. Together they uphold the fediverse technology ecosystem and are collectively responsible for evolving it. They chose fediverse as their communication medium, dogfooding their creations, even though this comes with its disadvantages. #Microblogging is ephemeral and fleety and discussions are dispersed and fragmented. There are clear points of improvements for the #fedi, frequently discussed.
What's very odd is that most AP devs hardly:
- Engage with other AP devs posts.
- Boost each other's msgs for visibility.
- Use hashtags for discoverability.
Low-hanging fruit for improvement?
If you build on ActivityPub, a comment or a reaction there is worth more than another workaround.
Which is, umm.. far from ideal. In my long screed about the state of the fediverse my main plea was for the ecosystem of fedi devs caring collectively about the open and grassroots standardization processes. That way, after some time you get a standardization process that can 'stand on its own' i.e. make decisions on the best direction for the future, instead of always relying on the elephant in the room for any progress. There would be an incentive to follow this standardization process, which will never arise otherwise, and things remain "everyone together, alone".

xkcd 927 is a thought-terminating cliché that gets overly cited
Yes, I agree it is cited too often. I was hesitant to mention it for that reason, esp. since you clearly gave this a lot of thought, and I am just passing by giving feedback. The format appears to be complementary but also quite overlapping. Creating a new spec - depending on your expectations wrt adoption - takes a ton of effort to bring to any widespread use. But perhaps that is not needed.
Wrt AP I am thinking myself about a Protosocial protocol extension that forms an 'overlay network' of sorts, to help bring more rigour to various network communication patterns.
https://discuss.coding.social/t/protosocial-activitypub-protocol/665
It is on the slow burner, as I can't afford to spend time on it atm.

Any implementation of a music collection on top of #ActivityPub would still have to implement the collection itself, and maintain standards for how backfilling works and how the collection is shaped, so why not start with a clean implementation that only provides the parts that are important to a music collection to begin with?
Yet I do wonder about https://xkcd.com/927
We often think about ActivityPub by how we experience it on the fediverse. But the fediverse rn is only a very particular implementation of AP, specialized to support microblogging and traditional social media use cases.
AP offers "a social graph of addressible actors to exchange activities with an object payload". Actors, activities, and objects are all fully customizable linked data, they can be anything, modeled to represent any domain.
With an ActivityPub API client you maintain your music collection locally, then publish and interact to a static site, or other interested actors.
Yes, it is shortened. The last sentence shown in Mastodon Web UI is:
Question re: double knock for AP devs who have implemented... is there a specific reason 9421-signed is sent first, and then cavage-12? [...]
I hadn't really noticed as it cut off right at the question mark :)
