One of the top threads on the ClaudeAI subreddit right now: "I am done with this shit" https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wm5c21/i_am_done_with_this_shit/

Curious to see just how much of the thread on a quite pro-genAI subreddit is people commiserating on the exhaustion of their work turning primarily into tedium and poor engineering.

Bonus in that the Claude AI summary bot in the thread says:

The Rise of the Meat Proxy: You're not an engineer anymore, you're an "organic vessel designed to press enter." Or, as one user so poetically put it, you're just a condom between Claude and your production server getting fucked. Your only real job is to be the warm body they can blame when the AI slop inevitably breaks.

reddit

I am done with this shit.

So: you started vibecoding your FOSS project? And now you don't really understand your codebase anymore *without* asking agents what's happening? And you basically outsourced all your favorite part of your passion project to managing a robot that doesn't care? And you're more burnt out than ever? I have to say that it's very difficult for me to feel sympathy for this. I see more people reporting on this, but it feels fairly predictable. But it also feels like it was clearly where it was going.

It's pretty simple. You're hearing "We're so scared of the AIs, we need to reign them in" from the very US companies building and selling them for two reasons:

  • They're about to IPO, and it's amazing marketing for them
  • They want a regulatory moat, since they're deeply worried about the open weight LLMs. They want everyone dependent on this tech and to be the only ones legally permitted to dispense it.

A decade ago: someone on your timeline is telling you not to be worried about advancements in AI because it was going to result in fully automated gay luxury space communism. You ask them how we are going to switch to that from capitalism by using capitalism to do it and they link you to an article about UBI. Don't worry about it, you're going to have time to work on your code and art finally Today that person is either fully disillusioned with all of it or is working at Anthropic

It appears that Tristan Buckmaster raising alarms that AI corporations may have snooped on their research so the companies could throw compute at developing proofs for, and gain credit for, advancements in the Navier-Stokes equations. OpenAI then threw a massive amount of compute at the problem, and seemed to try to coerce Tristan into getting credit for it: https://cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/statement.pdf

I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, “Why would you ruin your career?” I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, “If you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.”

Autistici/Inventati's domains have now been revoked. I updated the link in the above post with a wayback machine copy. Every now and then someone tells me, "We have a decentralized naming system, it's called DNS!" and I say, no we don't, DNS is extremely centralized? And if that wasn't clear to you before, hopefully it's clear to you today.

A friend pointed out something about the "Little Weird Guys in FOSS" list that was bothering me but I hadn't articulated: lots of queer people describe themselves as "weird", and lots of transmascs who didn't get T until after puberty self describe as "weird little guys" in a charming way. So if you are such a person and are like "why the hell is my self-descriptor being used with a list of people like, Eric Raymond," I just want to say... From a transfem weird tall lady of FOSS, I love and appreciate all our transmasc weird little guys in FOSS!

Perhaps I could have gotten a laptop with a beefier GPU; my intel integrated GPU is *sweating* trying to render some of these scenes in Blender. But it's doing it. I kinda have this vague opinion that it's good to not have to rely on "top end" hardware, that doing so puts you in a position of building or using or advocating for tech that many people can't access

I don't think you can put all else aside, but even just focusing on the maintainability of code itself... Using these tools to uncover bugs, sure. Using them to generate code that nobody in your community fully understands... well... And I know, you say, you'll be responsible about it. But you won't be able to keep up, justifying keeping up with that level of review won't happen. So you'll slip. And you'll eventually embrace not knowing. And so is everyone else around you. And so, decades of work are knotting up and the foundations are ensaring beneath our feet. And we could have, collectively, organizationally, taken a stand, and we didn't.

I think *local* LLM model usage for certain problem domains and work can be justified (but much less often than the LLM-maximizing hype is pushing for), but using hosted LLM models is *never* justified. The power asymmetry is too great. This is a great example of why.

RE: https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/117044615886264428 One of the highlights of my career is being able to collaborate with @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org on the @spritely@social.coop mascots (really, David did so much to transform my little doodles into real characters). David has been making beautiful, fantastical artwork in the commons and I have been a fan since Sintel. The prolific, high quality, and availability of David's work means that his art is a strong reference point within image generation models. Which also sadly means that much genAI artwork *looks like* a facsimile of David's work. Similarly, Spritely made a Scheme->WASM-GC compiler, and now there are tons of vibecoded Scheme->WASM-GC compilers which appear to use the same techniques. So why bother? But also, someone needed to do that work first. The disincentives here are depressing, mocking and belittling the source material that everyone then can generate something "easily" that it resembles. I don't know how to improve this situation.

Oh, OpenAI has responded now:

On Tuesday, September 1, we heard rumors that two Millennium Prize problems had been resolved. Inspired by these rumors and by the step change in performance of our internal model, we launched an effort to evaluate it on all open Millennium Prize problems and a few other high-impact problems.

"heard rumors" 🤔

Bring a craft project, bring a coding project! https://fossandcrafts.org/hack-and-craft/ As for me, I'm going to try to figure out how to make this grass I am working on in Blender better. But also when I took a screenshot of it, somehow that screenshot corrupted in the most beautiful way. Rather than show you my visible WIP grass screenshot, I'm going to share this corrupted screenshot because it looks kinda beautiful

computing, negative
we're not the only org that cares about empowering users by helping them better understand and participate in computing itself, but increasingly, it feels like Spritely is one of only a couple of places and it's getting harder and harder to get people to care, or it feels like it which just makes me care even more about our work but everything feels so precarious in this world rn

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@emilyskidsister/116994552007367487 While I don't use these tools myself, I think @emilyskidsister@hachyderm.io is right that if you are using them, it's important to try to make them as non-"personable" as possible. The hyper-empathy, hyper-personableness is something that's in the market interests of the bigger corporations. But it's like adding sugar to food everywhere: it sells more, and people will consume more, but it isn't good for people.
