@astra_underscore@wetdry.world I've got #FreeBSD running on a Thinkpad x260, #OpenBSD on a x200, and #NetBSD running on a random hand-me-down dell laptop (although S3 suspend and charge thresholds don't work on that particular bit of hardware). If there's anything I can do to help, just holler!

@oxy@social.bsdlab.au @computerchronicles@mastodon.social I think that depended a lot on whether or not you were running actual PowerPC native code. In native mode, they were supposedly super fast. The emulation for 68k code (the original "Rosetta") was amazing for what it was, but emulation is still emulation. ;)

I recently learned while flipping through youtube that the MacBook Neo saves money by only shipping 8GB RAM, ans saves RAM by aggresively swapping to... SSD. So I wonder how long it'll be before all of those SSDs start going belly-up. @axxuy@pony.social This is exactly how they get you. Cats find non-cat-people and become very lovy-dovey toward them. Once you're a cat person? IGNORED. 😂 (Basically, they like to be in charge of the interactions, not so much to be approached. For a cat to become comfortable being approached by a person can take a very long time. Or no time at all. They're all different! ;)

More #NetBSD thoughts: I'm an #i3wm / #sway or #KDE #Plasma guy. I tried #OpenBSD's default wm for about a minute, but it was just too jarring for me. I also used #cwm for a while, and it's actually nicely configurable, but I eventually reverted to i3 on OpenBSD. I haven't tried Sway yet, but #Wayland's supposedly working in "Fish Linux" now. ;) But #ctwm? Look, it's pretty ancient, and it's not a totally perfect fit for my worfklow, but I'm actually kinda diggin' it! It's also probably the most attractive default GUI of any of the BSDs, considering that obsd gives you a pretty loud bright red or bright blue titlebar motif-looking thing (not knocking motif, just the primary color choice), and #FreeBSD gives you (checks notes) no GUI by default. XD ctwm isn't quite as flexible as i3/sway, but it's just configurable enough to keep me coming back and tinkering away at it. The way the warpring function (alt+tab, in other words) works is pretty obtuse (only moving forward or backward in the window list, never re-ordering based on recency), but once I learned how to exclude windows (X11 classes or window titles) from the warpring, it became a ton more usable. I also figured out how to enable active titlebar highlight (it drives me nuts when that's disabled or very subtle, how do you even not understand that basic tenet of usability?) and even how to assign an xpm image to the titlebar so it looks pretty. Fun stuff! I should post another screenshot. ;)

@sotolf@polymaths.social Yeah, I'm not sure how I got here. I think part of it is the ADHD hypercompetent response to traumatic events, we turn into heroes when things are crazy bad, and revert to babbling incoherent messes when things are just slightly bad 🤣 Another part of it is trust issues with family and friends. For complicated and unfortunate reasons, I never completely felt comfortable just completely losing my shit around them, and when alone, I just tended to avoid the emotional stuff because it was unbearable. :/ I'm in therapy, though. Hopefully my therapist will slap me around with an emotional 2x4 (5x10cm? 😂) today.

Stupid network printer only works if I power-cycle it every time I go to print, from any computer in the houseCode up a little bash one-liner to ping the printer every 3 seconds and display a '#' if it's up and a ' ' if it's downPrinter starts working reliably because my pings are keeping it alive somehow?!?!?PROFIT!!!

I've got my eye out for some cheap #soda Coke is getting stupidly expensive for what it is. I was at Aldi the other day, and I saw some diet root beer, and bought it excitedly and took it home. I didn't realize until I tasted it that it was root beer flavored sparkling water. It literally tasted like someone poured some soda water into a glass, took a root beer flavored Dum-Dum (lollipop), and swizzled it around in the soda water and served it. Rather underwhelming. 😂 I distinctly remember circa 1993-1995 you could buy a can of soda from the vending machine at the supermarket (cold!) for 35¢ for brand-name soda and 25¢ for store-brand soda. 25¢ From 1993, that's 58¢ in 2026 money. 35¢ is 81¢ today. I don't think I've seen a can of coke for less than $2. No less than $1.50, for sure. Looking at walmart's website, a 12-pack of coke cans is $7.57, or a little over 64¢ each. Unfortunately, I don't remember how much non-chilled soda went for in the 90s. According to one website I looked at, two 12-packs of coke went for $6.98 in 1994. So I guess "wholesale" soda has kept with inflation, but I think vending machine sodas have gotten a lot more xpensive. I know for sure I bought plastic bottles of coke for $1.00 in 2010, but I think that was a subsidized price at my job.

@Timpostma@mastodon.world I have a completely cursed 2018 #Ender3 sitting on the floor in my garage 😆 ...but my main machine is a Sovol SV-07 that I got a couple years ago. It's a bit flawed, a little bit buggy on the software side, but it's got Klipper and it prints decently reliably and fast. It has mesh bed leveling and bed springs, for some silly reason. But I don't print very often, and for the most part, it just works. A #Prusa #CoreXY would be crazy cool, but they're out of my price league. ;)

Well, kind of like Apple now, except that they're killing it, financially (not that anyone should care about that). I recently heard some rumblings that Apple is maybe paying influencers to promote the new super-expensive folding iPhone? If it's true, I'm absolutely shocked.

Just perusing his profile, he does post some strongly anti-LLM stuff: https://mastodon.social/@alatiera/117231015717115878

Not sure why, but #mpv on #FreeBSD is super stuttery now and doesn't want to play video. Not sure what happened. rld@Intrepid:~$ uname -srm FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p2 amd64 rld@Intrepid:~$ pkg info |grep mpv mpv-0.41.0_1,1 Free and open-source general-purpose video player Tried reinstalling it and all its dependencies, but it's still doing it. Maybe I need to employ my old adage, the very sagest advice from a hypothetical #Canadian: "When in doot, reboot!" Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week. Please tip your waitstaff. 😄

@sotolf@polymaths.social At times, yes. But there's kind of this grin-and-bear-it, everything-sucks-and-we're-just-gonna-power-through-it stoicism that I've adopted that is honestly really not healthy, but helped me get through some really painful things last year. :( I'm kind of waiting for the (emotional) bubble to pop. Any time now. :E

@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe Wouldn't ssh/sshfs be a better option? SMB seems so convoluted to me, although maybe that's just an opinion from the bad old days when it had to be reverse-engineered by Tridge.

@chadmccullough@mastodon.bsd.cafe @dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org I think #OpenBSD is worth a look, as well. It was easier to get going. But I'm running all three.

@raster@retro-gaiden.com @chadmccullough@mastodon.bsd.cafe @dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org Are you sure OpenBSD doesn't have compat_linux? There's a manpage for it when I search online. Did they jettison it, too? 😄 Oh, it seems to not be in recent versions. They sure do like jettissonning stuff. XD I think you can run qemu, but without hardware optimization. Both OpenBSD and NetBSD have X11 in base. FreeBSD doesn't have any GUI in base, but they're working on a GUI installer with KDE Plasma. NetBSD's ctwm setup is prettier (IMHO) than OpenBSD's fvwm setup, but they're both very functional. OpenBSD's X11 (xenocara) and xdm (xenodm) are a bit more security-hardened and privilege-separated than the regular one.

@dendrobatus_azureus@polymaths.social @Timpostma@mastodon.world No. You want injection molding for that kind of speed. Of course, then the up-front costs go through the roof as the per-unit cost crash through the floor once you get up to real scale.

#TedLasso Feel-good episode. I really envy how ladies can just fall in a heap and cry (stereotypically, anyways). I'm so bottled up, I need some emotional ex-lax. XD
