With the proliferation of “dumbphones” and smartphone platforms that are intentionally set up to provide a degraded experience by not allowing you to install things that are major attention and privacy traps, I keep wondering why people are buying more unsatisfying ewaste that doesn’t cover their needs instead of just choosing not to install the garbage apps in the first place.
The Internet is becoming centralized is because it’s gotten ridiculously difficult and expensive to run a website without using things like Cloudflare and AWS, because everything has become designed to need it combined with the constant onslaught of AI bot traffic. So I’m starting to wonder if the bot onslaught isn’t AI but is just a scorched-earth thing coming from the companies which want centralized control to begin with, like an information-based protection racket.

@dio@kanoa.de Oh sure I totally get the desire for dumbphones from an aesthetic or nostalgia purpose; I'm super enamored with a bunch of them for that reason!
My issue is more with folks who are trying to use a dumbphone (or a "dumb" phone like the Commodore one) as a cure-all for all modern smartphone ills, but then getting frustrated that the things they need aren't available on the same phones.

Most of the advice for "just release singles" comes from a purely streaming perspective (which I abhor) and also from a "keep the algorithm fed" standpoint (which I also abhor)

@dio@kanoa.de like the Commodore phone in particular is pretty annoying to me because it is in every way that matters still a smartphone, but then they advertise themselves as having some sort of proprietary technology that allows most apps to install but bans social media and browser apps, but done in an incredibly paternalistic way.
Like, I get not wanting those apps on your phone. The solution to that is to *not install them*, not to engineer the entire phone around disallowing them.
The random plaintext summary on spam messages gets pretty weird sometimes.
(This was yet another “I hacked your computer, ooo scary, send me bitcoin” scam message.)

Okay it took a little learning but Focusrite Control 2 is a much better application than Focusrite Control 1. I just really wish it didn't reset the mixer settings entirely. I'm going to hold off on upgrading my VR computer because I alreayd have the mix how I like it for tomorrow's show, but come Friday I think I'll be updating it.

Also an episode not too far back had a very subtle message about the anti-Semitism and racism that was rampant at posh country clubs of the era, but they weren't brave enough to make it have an actual point.

For months I’ve had an incredibly persistent accounts receivable scammer trying to convince my “accounting department” that I owe thousands of dollars to some sort of corporate training seminar. I'm close to the end of season 5 of Bewitched, which is where there are far more episodes without Darrin than with.

Just finished the second-to-last episode with Dick York in it, where they were only able to film one scene with him before he collapsed on-set and they had to do a quick rewrite to avoid needing him at all anymore, using a little bit of editing trickery to reinsert him (badly) at the very end.
There is only one more episode with York at all, and after that he's replaced by Dick Sargent.

Basically I make way more on Bandcamp and Mirlo than streaming and even then I don’t make that much there either
I wonder if a different approach is necessary. Like I’ve toyed with the idea of making my albums “rolling releases” that people can fund as I release more songs on them, or going purely pay-what-you-want just to get more folks collecting it, but each of those lead to other big problems.
