Video of the Dirty Work book launch, published by the NZ Herald; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4m_-zwPV9k Nicky Hager looks only slightly less exhausted when he comes to the mic. It seems this book was a bit of an own goal for the Taxpayers Onion. Hager said he had no plans to write about them. As former AI researcher #DavidChapman puts it in Better Without #AI; "What we should fear is not intelligence as such, but sudden massive shifts of power to agents who may be hostile or callously indifferent. Technological acceleration can do that; but a new sort of AI is neither necessary nor sufficient to cause acceleration. Powerful new technologies are dangerous whether they are wielded by humans or AIs, and whether they were developed with or without AI." https://betterwithout.ai/fear-AI-power (3/3)

A lot of kiwi writers are keen to leave SS, for the same reasons David Farrier did with @webworm, and I did with @disintermedia.net.nz, inspired by his pieces about it. I suspect others could be convinced too. But some I've talked to find the pricing model of Ghost.org intimidating. I think there's an opportunity there for @magnificent@social.magnificent.nz to fill the gap. I wonder if @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz and @isaacfreeman@cloudisland.nz have decided on a pricing model for hosting Ghost newsletters here in Aotearoa?

The great Enshittocene is now spreading into in-person UX. A few hours ago I went to the local multiplex to see The Odyssey, and walked out with a refund. But I have no idea what the movie is like, I left within minutes of the start. I left because it was painfully loud for the tiny cinema, and the staff told me the volume was controlled by the distributor in the US. They have no projectionist who can customise the UX to the needs of the room. (1/?) #MovieIndustry #movies #enshittification

What Hager is saying - and I wholeheartedly agree - is stop platforming reputation launderers! Unless their organisation is directly relevant to the story, and even then, present them as what they are. Otherwise, make them pay for advertising space. Like anyone else marketing a product for a living. Corporate media people are always wailing about how they can't sell enough advertising. Why would political influencers pay for the cow when they regularly get the milk free of charge?! (3/3)

Lazy hacks working in comfortable corporate media jobs have never been in that situation. Because they see their role as both-sides-ing everything. I'm reading a 2023 piece about a visit to the country by a professional troll. To avoid getting derailed into a discussion about the particular issue this troll uses as bait, I won't give details. But the piece argues - as did many at the time - that those who staged an aggressive counter-protest did a Good Thing(™️). My argument is that they were morally right - I think the underlying position they were protesting for is unassailable - but strategically wrong. Why? Let's unpack this. (1/?)

I read somewhere recently that the core skill of a software dev is not just producing code, but easily maintainable code. In a Free Code context I would add easily reviewable and reusable code. In which case, tool that write lots of shitty code are anti-tools.

To be clear, I wasn't arguing for a repeal of Section 230 and similar laws. They're still suitable for regulating small-to-media online services. Like fediverse hosts, for example. I was just pointing out that trying to apply laws appropriate to small services to mega-platforms is a bound to fail, as it has. #Section230

(2/2) My point is, unless a server project provides a repeatable methods for generating a reliably useful model, running it locally isn't substantially better to running it remotely via an API. The main difference is that the person running the server pays for the compute it uses, instead of the supplier of the model. That seems worse to me, not better. #AI #MOLE

Fukkit. I think I have the 'rona. I've been in bed sick all week, coughing and sneezing up slimy liquids, and this morning I can't taste my cup of tea. Not much I can do except stay in bed, avoid my flatmates, and wait for it to burn out.

“You can dislike his politics, you can envy his money, you can be appalled at some of his misjudgments as a broadcaster, but he is so damned likeable.” #AudreyYoung, Senior Political Correspondent, NZ Herald, 2026 https://thespinoff.co.nz/media/17-07-2026/new-zealands-media-has-been-gripped-by-paul-henry-mania More evidence of the news media's manifest left-wing bias. If a journalist heaped praise on a new Green or TPM candidate like this - let alone a *senior* political correspondent - we'd never hear the end of it. Also, on what planet is Paul Henry *likeable*?

Colin Peacock also comments on Nicky Hager calling out news media, for routinely platforming spokespeople for hard right influencers as if they're expert commentators or unaligned pundits. Effectively doing their reputation laundering for them. https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/mediawatch/2026/midweek-hagerpalooza-preppers-delight-seymour-on-report (1/?) #ColinPeacock #MediaWatch #RNZ #podcasts

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@YvanDaSilva/115563876034073326 Anyone still arguing that the bursting of the "AI" bubble will leave us with useful computing infrastructure, now disused, needs to read and think about this. #AI #AIBubble #EWaste

Anyone tried this Matrix<>ActivityPub bridge? "Turns your Matrix server into a fully functioning ActivityPub server. Matrix users can post, follow, reply, react, and DM across the fediverse using ordinary Matrix rooms and clients. No separate account or server needed." https://github.com/Haven-Organization/matrix-appservice-activitypub @evan@cosocial.ca#Matrix #ActivityPub

BMW put a FULL SCREEN ad on all their cars at startup time

This has been normal on digital TVs for years, it was only a matter of time.

If the vendor has root access to your computer and you don't, guess who really owns your computer. Free candy for everyone who answered "the vendor". If they have network access to the thousands of computers they own, they can make them show people ads. If someone will pay them to do that, it's inevitable.

To be fair, the Opportunity party policy on this is even worse. They're totally drinking the kool-aid, and planning to give free public money to the #MOLE Training and DataFarming industries; "... we will introduce a new tax credit scheme. It will allow claiming back as a tax/credit up to 25% of the cost of rolling/out high-tech solutions such as AI and digital platforms." https://cdn.opportunity.org.nz/documents/policy/breakthrough-economy-policy-overview.pdf This is the kind of corporate welfare Labour regularly disappoints me with. #Opportunity (2/?)

This is bit worrying though; "The Cloud and AI Development Act sets out a series of 'Cloud and AI Leadership Initiatives" aimed at scaling European capabilities, from research funding to large-scale industrial deployment. It proposes fast-track 'data center acceleration zones', where permits would be granted within 12 months, and introduces procurement criteria designed to give preference to providers that demonstrate added value within the EU." #RamshaJahangir, 2026 https://www.techpolicy.press/eu-unveils-sweeping-tech-sovereignty-push-balancing-autonomy-with-openness/

EU Unveils Sweeping Tech Sovereignty Push, Balancing Autonomy with Openness

The “tech sovereignty” package marks the bloc’s most ambitious attempt yet to reduce dependence on non-European providers, reports Ramsha Jahangir.
