Here's the latest AI slop creator ripping off my content. This time they ran my script through an AI "podcast" generator (likely the free one by Adobe) and put it under the footage from my latest video. When I make my videos, I spend hours travelling and filming on-location to get real footage that can't be found anywhere else. Then these AI slop creators steal it and release it as their own. About 90% of my exposure to "AI" these days is just slop farms ripping me off.

I am really excited about this second season of Day Pass. Season one was a "pilot", and we didn't really know what the show would become. But this time around we knew exactly what we wanted to make and it turned out great! Season two will begin releasing in October and there will be six episodes across six different cities in Asia! https://youtu.be/hVd5pIBz4ro

RE: https://social.notjustbikes.com/@notjustbikes/117031622101246791 It's amazing how cyclists will make almost exactly the same arguments in favour of riding their private bikes everywhere that car drivers make in favour of driving their private cars everywhere. At a certain point, private transportation does not scale, and that applies to bicycles too. Sure, it happens at WAY higher volumes for bikes than for cars, but it does happen. I don't want trains and stations getting filled up by private bikes. I want more room for people to take public transit.

@danbrotherston@types.pl @BicycleDutch@mastodon.social I rarely take my bike on the train in the Netherlands. I use OV Fiets instead. In general, I don't think that bikes on trains is scalable; they take up too much space. They also consume elevator time that should be for people who need the elevator. I would rather see NS expand OV Fiets (add more bikes, electric bikes, bikes with kids' seats, etc.) rather than trying to make it easier to take personal bike on the train.

@uxMark@cosocial.ca thank you! When I started my channel I was sick of "urbanist" content being so passive and mealymouthed. Everything was always hedged with a "we don't want to take away anybody's cars but ..." and every argument was buried in so much "data" that nobody who wasn't already a diehard urbanist would sit through it. It pisses some people off but I literally do not care. It's ridiculous how much better Amsterdam has become in the past 7 years compared to cities that try to pacify drivers.

In October 2019, te same month I started Not Just Bikes on YouTube, Amsterdam published the document "Agenda Amsterdam Autoluw", a plan to make the city (nearly) car-free. So, seven years later, what did they actually accomplish? Did they do what they said they would do? https://nebula.tv/videos/notjustbikes-the-amazing-plan-for-a-nearly-carfree-amsterdam

When I did some reading on the current situation, I found a lot of sites out of Australia that were repeating this "base load" idea, in the context of nuclear power. I suspect that this is fossil-fuel propaganda. Fossil fuel companies love promoting nuclear power because they know it takes decades to get a reactor built (if it gets built at all), and in the meantime, everyone keeps using fossil fuels. It's the perfect way to cripple renewables without being obvious about it.

This was always my understanding of how renewables make the concept of "base load" irrelevant, again, as a person with a literal degree in Electrical Engineering. But I was gaslit by so many people that I felt the need to research the current situation again today. This could just be people using out of date information, but I suspect this is anti-renewables propaganda. Otherwise I don't know why so many people would even know what a "base load" is.

This means that the concept of "base load" is not really relevant, because there is no consistent base. And when the residual load goes negative, the wholesale price of electricity goes negative as well. Last year the Netherlands had negative wholesale electricity prices for about 7% of the year, and that amount is only going to grow. You can't afford to run a nuclear reactor when electricity prices are negative, but you also can't shut it down every day either.

It's good that the government blocked this merger, but it's kinda horrifying to hear that the backend for an absolutely critical bit of government infrastructure like DigID is being provided by a private corporation. 😬 https://www.techspot.com/news/112552-netherlands-blocked-us-company-buying-app-dutch-citizens.html

Energy consumption goes up and down throughout the day, but the "base load" is the minimum amount, even at the lowest point in the day. So nuclear power is good for providing this "base" because it's consistent and always running. The issue is that renewables sometimes output so much electricity that, especially when it's sunny, the grid makes *way* too much electricity. The electricity consumption of the grid minus renewables is called the "residual load", and it very very often goes NEGATIVE.

Here is the link to the petition, and there's more information in the article I linked to, above. https://c.org/fDgKpTjRRp I really think this happened because the big shippers (like Amazon) wanted it this way for regulatory capture (to purposefully keep the little guys out). But it's still ridiculous that the EU let this happen in this form. Carveouts for small businesses are the norm in EU legislation for exactly this reason.

You may have noticed that I almost never use music in Not Just Bikes videos, and that is very much intentional.

I recently put together a bonus video explaining why I don't use music, and what that has to do with the Minecraft YouTuber "Mumbo Jumbo."

This video is only on Nebula (not YouTube), for reasons that become very obvious when you watch the video:

@BrentToderian a great example of this is the infamous "15-Minute Cities" conspiracy, which was started by an anti-climate change group: https://www.desmog.com/2023/02/16/revealed-the-science-denial-network-behind-oxfords-climate-lockdown-backlash/ They spread lots of disinformation about supposed "climate lockdowns" that were coming and the 15-Minute City was just the one that stuck. Their goals had nothing to do with cities; good urbanism was just collateral damage.

@dat@social.g33ky.de @uxMark@cosocial.ca @PVPkoopDD@dresden.network Sometimes there is progress, but other times there is not. I've had people point to US cities and show me the 30 miles of new protected bike lanes as an example of progress. Meanwhile it took them 15 years to build them and in that time they built a new freeway and demolished 300 acres of farmland to build suburbs. That's not "progress."

@speculationfictive@union.place I didn't see any noticeable change before or after covid. There were a couple of places where bikes were moved to the road to make the sidewalks larger for social distancing (which were removed afterwards), but otherwise, plans pretty much proceeded as usual. I think the cities that did extra urbanism during covid were the ones that could never get anything done, politically, and used covid opportunistically. That wasn't necessary in Amsterdam.

@cabbagebeets Meh, I think the storage problem is way overblown. The really radioactive stuff decays in a fairly short period of time and it's kept on-site in water pools (and the Cherenkov radiation looks so cool). Once it's been there for a few years the remaining material is much less radioactive and very small. Yeah, it needs to be handled carefully, but there are way more important issues to worry about when it comes to large-scale power generation.

I had a great chat with Meredith Glaser, from the Urban Cycling Institute & Ghent University, to talk about "study tours" and how she gets international policymakers on-board to build better cycling infrastructure in their cities.

This was one of my better podcast conversations, so definitely check it out!

The actual location of where this "photo" would've been taken is Windsor, Ontario, Canada, across the river from Detroit (with the headquarters of GM shown in the background): https://maps.app.goo.gl/hYTKmR75WWHg4sto7 Windsor is pretty shitty, because it was also a "motor city", but at least it's not quite as dystopian as GM makes it look in this photoshopped image.

@LovesTha Yeah, that's the thing. When I was studying nuclear energy in University (because I was a huge proponent of it) it was the 90s, and we should've built a shitload of nuclear reactors then. It made sense. But now? Nuclear rectors take ages to construct and they will not be as cheap as renewables. Nuclear reactors may still make sense for powering heavy industrial applications though.

Cars are extremely harmful to society. They should not receive any subsidies of any kind at all.
