The whole Pixelfed AI fiasco had nothing to do with me using AI, it was about 3rd party contributors. When your at this level, you don't need AI, it only gets in your way. I’m so proud of the new v4 Pixelfed mobile app, I wrote 4 custom expo modules (Kotlin for Android and Swift for iOS) to handle a few unique features like on device language translations and the ability to select from multiple app icons. The media optimizer module was the hardest, and you won’t even tell, but it handles resizing media to the formats and size limits of your server without you even knowing. It’s details like this that separate your project to become the second biggest by MAU 🚀

@wgrav@fosstodon.org Yeah, I can't let that get to me though, because I've found that if I stick to constant progress, and proving their claims wrong, some come back around. Regardless though, I remain committed to building better alternatives to Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp/Messenger. When you put your mind to something, and believe in yourself, you really can achieve anything. That is what keeps me hungry. Not the haters, but the billion dollar platforms.

@grishka@mastodon.social Not really, you never really marketed it like say, I do for Pixelfed. You also have to admit that it's heavily inspired by VK which is primarily used in Russia and isn't as global as like Instagram or TikTok.

@doesnm yes, that would work, the Sup server is modular, so any protocol or service would work by mapping the schema via an adapter library.

Just shipped a few updates to Loops! Admins can now properly review DM reports, and review DM conversations to help detect bot and spam accounts. I just caught a few on Loops.video that have been suspended. Please report accounts that send spammy DMs! #loops

One last post before bed, been a wildly productive night btw, so I'm working on a new FEP for Stories! Stories are not just ephemerial posts that get deleted after 24h, they can also contain interactive layers (like mentions, hashtags, polls, urls) that require support across UI and federation. We also send StoryView activities to inform the author about who viewed it, and it works great. Replies are DMs that show the Story and "x replied to your story". More deets soon!

@wgrav@fosstodon.org Well, it was more for Pixelfed.social and the other official websites and the apps. It was a crazy period of time, and this was before the Kickstarter, then after the offers increased. I assume they wanted to monetize and leverage the brand hype at that time to earn it back, but yeah, that would never have worked. Instead, we're going to implement ethical monetization that gets creators and admins paid, because that's how it should be.

@wgrav@fosstodon.org There are people that accuse me of being transphobic, racist and an asshole, and I admit I was an asshole for brief period, but I was never the other two. It does hurt that people think I'm anything like that, when I've spent the past 9 years building better alternatives for them, and using my platform to give attention to smaller, less known devs and projects. I wouldn't still be here if I was like that, or had some malicious agenda. Like that doesn't make sense.

@EloPup@mastodon.social So when an admin reviews a DM report, we log the activity in the admin log, but yeah, just like every other platform like Mastodon, Pixelfed and GotoSocial, admins do have access to DMs. When we roll out encrypted DMs, admins will not be able to see them, with the exception of a reported message.

Pixelfed has been using the MastoAPI since 2019, and while it allowed us to support Mastodon clients, now we have our own app, we've added a query param _pe that we use in our webUI and mobile app to return a more optimized resource shape, while preserving the Mastodon structure.

Even though we're at the stage where we could deprecate the MastoAPI, we understand that many people enjoy using Mastodon clients, so we will continue to support it.

Sup. was rejected from NLnet, but I understand because they like to fund one type of project in a space to be able to support other types of projects. That won't stop me from building it though, and it will be subsidized from the donations to Pixelfed and Loops.
