@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social Those aren't socialists, those are totalitarians. Totalitarians believe that the state should run everything. Not unions, not voluntary organizations. The Nazis turned the Boy Scouts (of which there were several) into the Hitler Youth, for example. Stalinism was also a totalitarian system. The experience of living under those two systems would have sucked in very similar ways, although different groups were targeted by each. Totalitarianism is bad regardless of its stated goals.

@requiem@masto.hackers.town https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV78GF2PkOw Excellent example here. French railroad decided to skip some stops. A passenger who wanted one of those stops pulled the e-brake and exited the train. Engineer botched the process of resetting the brakes. Railroad was now way behind, skipped more stops. Train came to the end of the line with no brakes. Many people killed. There were a few more errors too. No air check was performed. An air check - continuity all the way to the last car - should be performed.

@tempusfelix@wehavecookies.social Auto driving is only useful if it is truly auto driving: get in the back and sleep soundly while the car gets you there, with no fear of waking up dead. We're not there yet. Phones and laptops are more or less finished products and do not need to change any more. There is nothing radically new there.

@geospacedman@mastodon.social @Cheeseness@mastodon.social @doctormo@floss.social Slavery is a whole worldview, and it requires a vast amount of hypocrisy to maintain. The slave is human enough to care for your kids and cook your dinner (you wouldn't let a chimp do that, right?) but not human enough to have any rights. From that basic contradiction you get a twisted, backward civilization that doesn't progress and eventually loses. The similar contradiction with AI is when you use it to not pay people, but expect people to buy your stuff.

Why is BitTorrent still running after 25 years. It's an amoeba. It has no head to cut off. Now I tried to write an email system like that 12 years ago or so, and it worked fine, but I could not get a critical mass of users. It used the same Kademlia algorithm as BitTorrent.

Signal is as good as you can get without building your own infrastructure. I built my own. It's here: https://TheUnCloud.co/ Now that thing is not comparable to Signal, BUT it has no accounts. When you close the window the content is gone. It uses WebRTC. Different use case. The right architecture is the one where there is nothing to seize.

And given that Signal is a foundation, why don't they operate from somewhere else? The real reason here is phone numbers cost money, so infinite spam is not free. That and their architecture is still phone number based. WhatsApp took over precisely because it could match your contacts. Signal does that without a centralized address book. Signal is the best thing that doesn't require tech support

@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie @maxleibman@beige.party Yes, the ability to use shares as collateral for loans is a problem. That along with share buybacks should probably not be allowed. Using shares to get a loan is what enables leveraged buyouts and other corrupt schemes that often fail. Shares should be for earning a dividend. Fix the tax problem and re-anchor the stock market in the real world. How does Apple take money out of circulation? I assume their cash reserve is invested in something.

He does have a vast amount of resources at his disposal, but he is not just sitting on them like a dragon on his gold hoard. He is using them to do things. Stalin didn't care either. One thing that postwar Russia did right, given they were short of men: unconditional state child support for unmarried women. The surviving heroes had a lot of fun and Russia had a baby boom. Nations that did not do that had a lot of women emigrating. Russia wouldn't allow that.

@handi@mastodon.ie Given that the LLM companies used torrented books, I am guessing all of them. Since Meta got in trouble for the books, they probably have dodgy third parties doing this stuff. Their user agents are normal Chrome ones from what I've seen. A botnet node accepts commands from a control server and initiates traffic out to the Internet. It's like a black hat VPN.

That's the problem. A lot of CEOs have crashed corporations because they basically cheated on the "pilot's license" and don't know how to run a corporation. They are still allowed to be CEOs again. There is no solution except a crisis that forces us back to the basics: on-the-job training, tests, competence, and actually generating value.

@mattblaze@federate.social Probably not. But nobody trusts the system. There should be a way to restore public trust in elections. There are likely quite a few mail-in ballots collected from nursing homes, apartment complexes, etc. and voted by other than the intended recipient. That is hard to prevent with mail-in, so less mail-in and more mark-sense would lead to more trust.

@AAKL@infosec.exchange @TheConversationUS@newsie.social @mttaggart@infosec.exchange The problem is a culture where students only care about passing, not about learning. The assumption is that success in the real world is all about cheating. If you could cheat and get a pilot's license without learning how to fly the airplane, would you? Not if you're sane, because you would likely crash the plane and get killed. Why is there no similar fear among students? Because they assume the work is fake. It's all just box checking. That's the problem.

There were single battles in the Civil War with more casualties than the entire Revolution. Sure it was horrible for the people involved; wars usually are. But the British were actually reasonably civilized. They could have gone scorched earth on the civilian population, and did not. They also had at least one chance to shoot Washington in the back, and didn't do it. Maybe too civilized for their own good.

There should be (and probably is) a plan to airlift the fab workers, their families, and critical bits of the machines out of Taiwan or SK.

@mattblaze@federate.social In California we get "day of" counts and then most of the time mail-in votes keep coming in for weeks and several races usually flip. Not saying that's cheating but it creates a loss of confidence. When Abraham Lincoln ran in 1860, he spent the day at the telegraph office, where the staff read him the returns as they came in. By the end of the day he was pretty sure he had won, and congratulations were coming in. We ought to be able to at least equal that performance today.

This stuff is mostly about restoring TRUST in the vote. Nobody trusts an election where votes just keep coming in for two weeks and the outcome changes. Yes we keep hearing about the 2020 election, but remember the other side kept questioning the 2016 election. Nobody trusts the current system. That's a problem.

@AAKL@infosec.exchange Several reasons. The Hollywood Communists weren't really putting a lot of propaganda into their movies. But the university Communists gave us the Frankfurt School, the Cloward-Piven strategy, Maoist struggle sessions, and most of the Leftist problems we have today. Of course, business schools gave us the extreme capitalism, all's fair in business and war problems we have today. Bad ideas sprout and grow in universities. They should not be watered with public money.
