@nixCraft@mastodon.social You mean Alphabet / Google is crippling yet more Android features. In a sane world Alphabet would not be allowed control of Chrome, Search, Youtube, Android, Groups, Playstore, Nest and taxies. They are an unregulated Advertising Agency that uses technology. Similar logic: Amazon is a mail-order catalogue retailer that uses Internet instead of phone/telex/post/fax.. They should not have products they control (Fire, Kindle readers, Kindle apps, Kindle DRM, Echo, Dot, Ring etc).

@AkaSci@fosstodon.org They are a Spectrum regulator. They should have no authority to licence anything else. Nor spectrum outside of above USA. Nor content of TV/Radio stations. The ITU allocates spectrum usage. The FAA only authorises launch safety and is bad at it. USA Regulation is broken.

@firebreathingduck@social.vivaldi.net @cwebber@social.coop Would spending the money on a translation program to translate language A to B be better? Though I've never seen one of those that worked for non-trivial real world packages. The MS tool for VB6 to VB.net was worthless. It was better to re-design & rewrite in C# to move from VB6 to .net. Redesigning is important when moving & I can't believe LLMs can do it. How maintainable or easy for humans to change/add features to LLM gened code? Can the LLM add features? PR!

@Gina@fosstodon.org @rikviergever@mastodon.social @murena@mastodon.social It should be illegal to have app only. There should be a fully functional web page. Conversely an App that is a local thing shouldn't at all insist on location or Internet. Also Google/Alphabet has lost the plot. They need HARD regulation with massive penalties. & any appeals must be rapid.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Even 1600W is generous. Decent 500W vacuum cleaners existed in 1960s! The high power and noise was marketing. As unnecessary as a USA V8 engine eating 3x the fuel of car just as good for A to B and maybe better. Next ban the overlarge SUV and have a special licence showing need for trucks.

Or an individual stealing cable/satellite service (can be €100,000, seizure of all electronic equipment and closure of buiness). Anything less that shutting them down, seizing data centres and ruling all titles & sites used was illegal is endorsing it. Web sites & books are content for humans to read.

@budududuroiu@hachyderm.io @briankrebs@infosec.exchange It's not a position, it's a fact, based on professional programming training, professional work and University "AI" courses. You can obviously write a program or create a system that has the illusion of intelligence. As we don't have clear definition, it's possible to think a system is intelligent. That's a failure of logic and critical thinking. No road map for real artificial intelligence. Loads of useful programs have AI labels. LLM/Generative/Agentic dead ends.

Of course the photo hoaxes and disinformation was bad rather than amusing.

@protonprivacy@mastodon.social I'd trust my ISP more than random foreign VPN service provider who really exists to provide evasion of geolocation based blocking. Geolocation based on IP and blocking by location are both immoral. But that's a different issue. The use case for VPNs is secure access to your own office or home when away, and that doesn't need a 3rd party that can spy on you.

@BobDevney@wandering.shop @mrundkvist@archaeo.social Well, probably if you go back far enough Europe was populated after the Ice Age by migrating humans. Humans in the Americas came from Asia. Likely people originated from Africa. The European invasion & colonisation of the Americas and Australia / Aotearoa and Hawai'i are in recent times. And they brought disease, deliberately and accidentality. Much later than English Annexations of Wales & Ireland. It was Capitalism Comparisons to Neolithic migrations are not relevant.

@bettina@mastodon.nu @FrankBlack78@social.tchncs.de @itsfoss@mastodon.social USB applies to copying non-DRM ebooks in azw3 format to physical kindles. Only K1, K2 & DX family don't use azw3, which is closest to epub. Send to Kindle: Amazon converts to KFX, deletes fonts & resizes/reduces quality on images. There are file size limits too (larger on Web interface than email) and it uses Internet twice. Amazon get a copy. Using Calibre (free on Mac, Linux, Windows) to convert epub (or other reflowable formats) to azw3 is closest to epub.

@FrankBlack78@social.tchncs.de @itsfoss@mastodon.social @bettina@mastodon.nu Amazon has blocked the Kindles & downloads that allowed DRM removal. It's now nearly impossible to remove the DRM. They are contract obliged to offer DRM free where asked by provider, but KFX has no DRM free version, so they brought back downloads for those, only epub (mangled by Amazon) and no indication before you buy. Don't use Send to Kindle as it gives Amazon a copy other issues. Use Calibre & USB for Kindles.

@crocodisle@woof.tech I don't so much care about blocking ads, as selectively blocking scripts, that if 3rd party can be malicious, and if 1st party can interfere with the content because the website builder was an idiot. I find uMatrix best for that and it doesn't run on Vivaldi. I fount "The Guardian" web site (and others) unusable with Vivaldi. It they are serious about being an alternative they need their own browser instead of reusing someone else's engine. Firefox has gradually got worse.

@itsfoss@mastodon.social No ebook reader requires DRM on eBooks, not even the locked down Kindle. Kindle can be used without Amazon. The Kindle is the only ereader that phones home & only if WiFi is on. Ebooks load via USB. Buttons for page turn are good & can be ignored. 4.2″ is too small for most people, though there are some smaller. There were 5″ ereaders, but they'll not be back. 6″ is OK and 7″ or 8″ are very good. 480 × 800 is poor. CPU too cheap & slow. OS doesn't mean a free ride!

A 5W FT817ND radio and we heard the ISS when it showed in range on the big screen. We got one contact with them. JOTA.

@blipcast@mastodon.social @protonprivacy@mastodon.social Plenty of ISPs here. They have zero incentive to serve advertisers anywhere in the EU as it would be illegal. Maybe the USA is different. There is no use case for a paid VPN other than evading geolocation limits. That's why most people have them; not privacy. I've been running a VPN server here off & on for 20+ years and used ones to connect to an office.

@sarahjamielewis@mastodon.social The only private secure VPNs are ones with the server/endpoint in your own home or office. Those allow secure use of public WiFi etc. The 3rd party ones are not about security or privacy, they are a service to evade geo-restrictions. The big issue on age limited access is nothing to do with VPNs, because it has zero affect on services or VPNs provided from your own office or home, but loss of privacy for everyone accessing public services / websites.

@bettina@mastodon.nu @itsfoss@mastodon.social You can only read the tiny % of ebooks on Amazon that are DRM free, they have an epub download. Amazon doesn't indicate which ebooks are DRM free. The rest can only be read on a newer, registered Kindle, or current Kindle app. Kobo isn't locked down & is far better value. This is a hobby project with too small, too low resolution screen & too slow CPU. Foss is good, but OpenBook Touch is pointless. More expensive than a 7″ ereader here Kobo.
