mid-30s, non-binary agender femboy they/them genderfluid mess or something, idfk

relationship anarchist and usually very horny and kinky, subby, and probably up for whatever you have in mind, but I suck at subtext, so ask! also see the pinned boundaries post. outright lewd posts are usually behind CW but casual mentions of sex/kink may not be. sure fedi can be a dating platform, why do you ask

political: abolish oppression and hierarchy, self-governance and agency are the way to go. also in tech.
interactions: no alt text (request) = no boost, not interested in 'debating', and I don't always have the spoons to respond to everything.
projects: they're on my webbed site!

@sandwich@mastodon.world welp. it's slightly bizarre to see a client that presents itself as being accessibility-focused, having such a poor alt text implementation... I don't know if it also shows you the alt texts it generated so you may not be aware of this, but I went back through a couple of your posts and they basically all look like the result of asking an LLM "summarize the picture for me", focusing on composition and vague descriptions instead of what the image is actually about or even just what it displays like in this case it describes the message on the wall as "a message about racism in America and protest" but it never actually specifies the message itself ("racism is so american that when you protest it people think you are protesting america"), and in https://mastodon.world/@sandwich/117029541211263207 it describes the guy on the right as "a man in a suit" even though presumably the identity is relevant to the meme...

if there's one thing I've learned after 20 years of programming it's that nobody checks *anything* you can just... say shit. make wild claims about performance or security or maintainability or even cost savings. and nobody will check. ever. companies will make million-dollar engineering decisions and still never check any of it. if I got a nickel for the amount of times I investigated a completely unquestioned claim made by the owners/creators of some popular-at-the-time technology or tool, and found an outright lie within the first ten minutes... I'd have a hell of a lot more than two nickels, and that's really kind of terrifying actually

To spell it out a bit more for those who need it: the AI bros don't *need* Codeberg. They are getting so angry just because someone is daring to tell them "no". Because someone is daring to dissent in a way that matters in some way, even if it's a small way. Because they are straying from the religion, and going against its dogma that "the AI future" is above questioning. Because they are feeling threatened by it, because it calls into question their own beliefs and whether they may have been wrong about them.

a real-world full text search has more trickery than that of course, but like, this kinda already.. works? and none of it is *particularly* complicated, as long as you have a key/value database like lmdb that supports storing multiple values for a key

codeberg meta
there's a really interesting correlation I've noticed, which is that the people complaining about the codeberg AI decision almost invariably demonstrate that they don't understand the concept of a member association they call a vote a 'survey', or they describe it as a choice from 'high on up', or they describe codeberg as a 'company' or 'business', or they complain that as a (regular) user they weren't asked for their opinion, or they come up with the most basic-ass 'concerns' about how it would be soooo easy to manipulate the vote because 'anyone can vote' (which is not how it works), and so on, and so forth like, there's not *literally* a 1:1 correlation between "AI bro" and "fundamentally doesn't understand democratic mechanisms and structures" but it's nor far off either #codeberg

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be the single most reliable approach I've found, which basically always works if someone is reasonably aligned on ethics and worldviews (doesn't have to be perfect, even pro-police stances are not necessarily an obstacle), is to talk about anarchism in depth *without ever actually calling it anarchism* like literally, just don't use the word. no "anarchy", "anarchism" or "anarchist" anywhere in the conversation. none of the anarchism-specific (or even socialist) jargon. just describing all of its components as free-standing ideas that don't have a particular label attached, but rather are just your views after a couple hours of conversation, you can mention "oh yeah this is what anarchism is about" and it'll just... pass by, as a casual remark, registered and accepted, nothing to argue about. because they've absorbed the meaning before there was ever room for a 'gut response' associated with the label and then after that point you can start generalizing by drawing a distinction between what's fundamental to anarchism and which bits were just your particular interpretation or preference for it, and it'll just be another completely uncontroversial conversation topic that people are interested in learning more about it requires a fair amount of patience to get through all of this, because it's likely to rapidly spiral into exploring half of anarchist theory, but IME conversations in this format tend to be very low-conflict (also preferably don't start with 'abolishing the police', rather let the conversation naturally flow to the question of fundamentally oppressive structures first, and only after that is understood and agreed, demonstrate how police ticks all the boxes and has the same problems and so therefore logically is a case of it - starting with 'abolish the police' as a premise is likely to upset people because they feel threatened about being 'without protection' as they do not yet have any concept of how else safety could be produced and so intuitively assume there is none)

there's this project idea that I've been playing with for a while, it's a bit hard to describe but something like a P2P programming and data environment where both data and code are (content-)addressable, and where the 'code' part is designed for end users to work with to make their own data representations, and build personal but interoperable apps/sites/etc. that way and this frustration, like so many frustrations I've had, kinda slots into that idea as well I think. what if notes were internally represented in an addressable data structure such that you could just eg. select some notes or paragraphs or objects within a note, right click "share with...", select a contact, and those notes would be sent P2P to that person, alongside every bit of custom representation code you wrote (or got from someone else!) that's needed to make it readable and interactable - optionally with a read-only or read-write 'key' to let them follow the updates you make or even collaborate on them there's like, plenty of things that have some limited subset of this idea, but it's always defined and limited in a way where you can't really use it in any way other than what the developers envisioned, and it's always vendor-specific what I want is a decentralized computing environment that makes minimal assumptions and gives maximum control to users, while taking care of the difficult and fragile P2P-network-y parts, ideally over more forms of connectivity than just the internet (eg. also meshnets) but there's... a lot of pieces that are needed for this and I just haven't had the time to work on this much

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz "Chinese" is an odd framing here, and kind of misses the most important bit. The jewelry in question will be widely resold on lots of platforms, Chinese and otherwise (the investigation also found it on Amazon, after all), so this really doesn't help to identify it. And it's also been known for quite some time now that the shadier piercing/tattoo shops throughout at least Europe also often use products contaminated/faked in the same way, and there you *definitely* won't know where they bought the stuff.

the reason this matters is that 'planned obsolescence' is a real thing, even if it's in a different form than people usually think: it's not some massive conspiracy, it's "just" manufacturers spending exactly enough on parts and labour to make it Probably Survive The Warranty, and accepting that some percentage of it won't that gamble suddenly gets a *lot* more expensive when your design that's specced for 2 years lifespan breaks at 1.9 years and then you have to repair it *and* that same 2-year-lifespan design now has to survive for *3 years*, because chances are you'll need to repair it *again* because some other component broke a bit later which means that to be safe, manufacturers now need to spec it for *more* than the 'warranty period', and also design against cascading failures, to make sure that it makes it through, and because the 'warranty period' isn't actually fixed in EU law but based on 'reasonable expectations', this makes it likely that those reasonable expectations slowly shift towards longer product lifespans because everybody is constantly targeting slightly-above-average

@ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu I don't think that's necessarily true. The rollout was to some degree coordinated between desktop environments and distros, so there was clearly an underlying social (and political) cohesion making it possible to *achieve* that critical mass - it wasn't just a purely momentum-based organic adoption process like with many other FOSS things. I haven't seen anything to suggest that that coordinated rollout couldn't have happened at some later point in time, after resolving some of the common real-world pain points (screensharing, screenshots, ease of implementation, etc.) first, and keeping it on an experimental track (think Microsoft's 'insider builds') for a while longer, to make sure that the first impression of a typical user is good.

this is extremely rudimentary of course, but basically it's nothing more than a key/value store, a regex, a string concatenation and some Maps and arrays in a trenchcoat split every name into something approximating a 'word', also generate a concatenation of every 2 subsequent 'words' and add that to the 'words', then store a reference from each of those words to the original item's ID then you do the same splitting for the search query, get every reference from the index DB for every 'word' in the query, order the reference IDs by how many of them matched and put the one with the most matches against the query at the top, fetch the actual underlying record (the name and the URL) for the top 10 results and show them and presto, that's it

There is no meaningful difference between "border security" and the idea of "one group primitively kills another group when they enter their territory". We've just dressed it up in institutional language and outsourced the cruelty to those who like doing it, so that we don't have to watch it happen and can pretend it doesn't. So that we can pretend it is 'humane' and 'reasonable'. Just like I'm sure every group historically made up some moral justification for killing other groups.

@ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu Fedora in a lot of ways is (or at least, was) meant to be a testbed for new technical decisions in RHEL, even though that was never very clearly communicated to end users, so it makes sense that it would be the first major one to adopt it. But AFAIK there were already a lot of backroom conversations between distro maintainers at that time - with 'coordinated rollout' I don't so much mean that they all rolled it out at the same time, as that they were in constant contact with each other and learning from each other's experiences to figure out when to make the call themselves. It's less about the schedule and more about the social connections :)

since nobody medical seemed able to answer "how are you supposed to keep your meds at under 25 celsius in a heatwave" when I asked them a while ago, here's the answer that I've figured out by now: you use an insulated bag. you know, the kind that you'd use to keep your drinks and food somewhat cool when going out for a trip or a picknick or whatever. not an active cooler, just the passive insulated bags. blow <25C air into them at night when things have cooled down (or even air from an AC unit somewhere), put your medication in there, and only open it when you need to take the meds. cold air sinks to the bottom so if you open it at the top, it will remain at temperature pretty well, same idea as a chest freezer. (don't put your meds in the fridge; unless they're specifically *meant* to be stored there, chances are that a fridge is too cold and humid)
