@ombialik@mastodon.world i don't know what hummingbird they are illustrating but i think this was brought home in hummingbirds when a VERY widespread & (we thought) well-known hummingbird, the white-necked jacobin, was discovered that if you did the DNA test, around 10-20% of the birds in "male" plumage were "females" (capable of laying eggs)

@jmcrookston@mastodon.social in the US, that depends on the terms of agreement, yes, i have a free checking account that pays no interest & charges me no fees & in return if i get robbed or my house burns down i still got my money because the bank is insured by FDIC while homeowner's insurance won't cover lost or destroyed cash i've been thru bank closures & Hurricane Katrina, thanks to FDIC i didn't lose my life savings (IIRC Omni Bank lost every branch in Katrina but customers lost not a penny)

@kims@mas.to he may think they're worth something, check some of the issues on eBay for SOLD items, not for ACTIVE items -- ACTIVE items are the ones that didn't sell!!! i'm finding old magazines are worth very little because the older issues are scanned online somewhere but if it makes him feel better, there is no harm in checking out their current value before using them to line the bird cage... but i'm finding most magazines are not worth the space they take up
