I don't get why so few people put smoking/burning power banks in a tub of water (on air planes and honestly in general). it's the same thing we do with smoking/burning EVs; it cools the battery cells and stops the reaction, and contains the smoke and fire. The water doesn't cause problems the runaway thermal reaction hasn't already caused. It seems silly, but if you have a battery that catches on fire, AFAIK the best thing you can do is to dunk it into a bucket or tub and fill it with water.

can't wait for the anti-AI bubble to collapse so people can be normal about it for a change. so we can finally start having the discussion of how to deal with it and regulate it in a fair and equitable way, instead of collectively plugging ears and pretending it's going to magically disappear after having been around for basically a decade and showing no actual signs of stopping. [cue a thousand people explaining how The Bubble Is Collapsing Actually, utterly missing the point]

cold take: if you "try linux" but you only install one distro (especially one that many around you said not to use), and it ends up being a shitty experience, you cannot declare "linux sucks" because Linux Is Not A Singular Thing. I see people with an actual android (linux) phone calling linux shit after they tried ubuntu and it didn't work for them. Try something else. linux is like a bunch of screws and mounting materials, it's impossible to say if it is good without the rest of the parts

look, I don't care how righteous you think you are, if you're boosting un-CW'd violence onto my feed you are getting perma-muted and/or unfollowed. For the sake of everyone with PTSD, fucking stop that shit, your violence is not 'good' just because it aligns with your political goals. And while we're on the subject: Why doesn't anyone remember Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity? You think picking up the weapon of your enemy is going to convince them, when it didn't convince you??

if I had a nickel for every time I had a nickel, I'd really hope nobody ever sets off the nickel avalanche by giving me the first nickel, because everyone would probably die in a swarm of nickels that rapidly consumes the planet, solar system, and rest of the universe

I lowkey hate that there's a phase where stuff you use degrades to the point it is no longer nice to use, and you kinda already bought a replacement, but you don't want to throw out the old one yet because it's technically still functional

@lispi314@udongein.xyz it kinda depends on if the water ingress gets deep enough to cool down the reaction until it stops, it doesn't always, sometimes you have to breach the pack (in the case of cars) to make that work

I think it's unfair to compare vi(m) and emacs, they're not built for the same purposes. #emacs is a full productivity suite with addons and parts for every imaginable thing in the universe. it's the CLI version of an 'everything app', it'll just as happily help you with spreadsheets or email or your calendar or align the planets in whatever specific configuration as part of your dark voodoo magic incantation workflows or whatever. and #vim and #nano are also not the same, for the same reasons

I tried Meshtastic a year or so ago but couldn't find anyone in range from my home even with beefy high up antennas. I tried again earlier this year but no change. Now I'm trying Meshcore... and I'm having the same issue. The only nodes I can see are my own, unless I drive 20km south. I need to plonk down some additional repeaters.. I wonder if the muncipality/govt would get upset if I mount them to random public places? probably? :blobcatgooglyholdingitsheadinitshands: #Meshcore #Meshtastic

I know this is going to sound very contrarian, but I think Smart Glasses are one of those things that are once again potentially extremely neat, but wrongly designed, marketed incorrectly, and enabling abuse, and are in desperate need of regulation.

Like honestly, imagine being vision impaired, and you could ask your glasses 'hey I'm looking for [object] can you let me know when you see it?' or 'can you read this restaurant menu?' or being able to look up plants, animals etc you saw

@small_cypress@indieweb.social Ubuntu was great in 2008 when it was ahead of the rest by some measure because it made things just work, it was truly "Linux for human beings" because it did NOT do anything special, it was a small team that knew exactly what people needed. These days it's a big company with somewhat apple-esque tendencies and a lot of people dislike what they do. It's worth trying e.g Fedora, which is the current "2008 Ubuntu" that just works, is polished, updated, and doesn't try to be special

@small_cypress@indieweb.social Linux Mint is based on an ancient version of Ubuntu (LTS) which probably is the reason why it causes more problems for you than a non-LTS version of Ubuntu. Even normal Ubuntu has a lot of outdated packages though, especially in the 'universe' repositories. Fedora (or e.g Bazzite, sort of like the "Linux Mint of Fedora"), is much more up to date across the board, and seems to be much better tested. If you have modern up to date hardware, it *should* work much better than Ubuntu.

I'm cancelling the growatt order I guess. I don't truly need it if it works like this, and if I can use this thing until it actually dies then I will at least be able to avoid a piece of e-waste happening while keeping my solar array from decade old salvaged parts working. Ideally I replace both the inverter and the panels at some point with newer ones, but right now I can get 700w out of this (once the second string is attached) basically for free.

according to my home usage graphs it is actually getting more than 800w sometimes! I don't have a proper connection to the inverter, but I did manage to capture it generating 796W on a half cloudy day before noon, so it is not unlikely! The array is 990Wp (6x 165Wp SolarFrontier), 15+ year old panels, using an equally old inverter that's made for 2500W arrays, and not aimed at the sun, so I honestly think that's a pretty decent score :drgn_sparkle:#diysolar #solar

second string connected, about 650w of actual output right now, not bad for a nearly free setup of 10-15 year old reused parts (6x SolarFrontier 165Wp + SMA sb2500) that isn't even aligned with the sun (just lazily mounted on the shed)

okay okay fine I'll replace that disk geez, silly zfs, it only has like *checks notes* 3.09 MILLION checksum errors! but SMART says it's fine so it must be fine obviously.

(nb: it COULD be an error in the cabling or controller of course, but I've already reseated everything so I don't think that's the issue. It's just.. a great example of why you need more than SMART and prayers to keep your data healthy)

@small_cypress@indieweb.social so like, in the end everyone has their own preferences really, I can't tell you what works best for you because it's a personal thing. But, Ubuntu is kind of a.. well, obnoxious hipster I guess? It wants to do everything slightly differently, has gone through phases of writing its own desktop environment (which was basically gnome3 and so they deprecated it eventually), they even made their own display server, Mir, which turned out to be a copy of Wayland they didn't disclose.

@CyrikCroc@dragonchat.org honestly I don't even blame people for being upset, especially in the political dumpsterfire of the USA, because I'm also fiercely against the unregulated mess that's happening in the datacenter industry over there. I'm honestly not saying you can't be angry over bad things happening. But I really wish people could 1) see the technology separate from the abuse, cuz otherwise the perpetrators will pretend this is normal too, and 2) still talk about (less absolute) laws.

@KasTasMykolas@river.group.lt getting a high pole up would probably help, my house isn't super big compared to surrounding buildings. My neighbor used to be a ham and used to actually have a rather professional tower for his antennas, but he took it down unfortunately (he's nearly 80 now), otherwise that would've been a great fit. I might talk about it with the local HAMs, but officially it is illegal in the netherlands to mount things without explicit permission, and I suspect the muncipality won't approve 💔

@groot@toot.community hard disagree. if one distro doesn't work for you, that doesn't make the kernel bad. That's like saying Aluminium sucks because you used one of those cheap ass stamped aluminium laptops, while airplanes are doing just fine. Ubuntu used to be great, back in 2008, but in my experience it hasn't been for quite a while- that's quite a bit more subjective than actually declaring all of linux bad just because you refused to look further than the first thing you stumbled upon though.

@Eichi@mastodon.bierschutzpartei.de gnome leadership has been like this for a while and it's exactly why KDE has been overtaking them on many features and abilities. on Gnome you can't even have desktop icons without third party plugins, which break with every update because the max-version in the plugin needs to match the version of the environment.

@chirpbirb@meow.social you could of course decide to boycott a type of software over the disagreement, I think a lot of linux users can find themselves in that, and in that sense you can definitely send a strong signal together by boycotting. but the relationship is not so simple that you could state that people who use xyz always endorse the creators of xyz. You don't always have that choice, or the ability, or even just the energy to boycott and uproot what you need or enjoy just to make a statement.

@spitfire@mastodon.social I know it works, because if I drive around I get tons of messages, but I have to drive away quite a bit from where I am before I get any responses. I live in a very distant place, close to the shore (but behind dykes), in the middle of a town (so lots of buildings causing interference even despite being in a rural area). local repeater discovery finds 0 nodes, also not getting any replies whatsoever in the rx log unfortuantely. I just kinda need to put a repeater up somewhere high tbh
