EcoJustice: 'Tell your MP to stop fuelling wildfires' Science shows that climate change — fuelled by burning coal, oil, and gas — is making wildfires bigger, hotter, and more frequent, creating what experts call “supercharged” wildfire seasons. We need to rein in the destruction while we still can. Wildfire smoke attacks your lungs, heart and brain: Harmful particulates in wildfire smoke travels deep into the lungs, slips into the bloodstream, and gets into the brain directly through the nose. When toxins reach the brain, they can cause inflammation, lack of focus, and headache; long-term exposure leads to brain damage and cognitive decline. https://www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/business/how-does-wildfire-smoke-affect-your-brain-today-and-down-the-road/article_44886cd9-7f31-5533-8ad2-48e912130f8c.html #Canada #CDNPoli #ClimateCrisis #BCPoli #ONPoli #NoPipelines #NoLNG #Wildfires #ExtremeWeather #Drought #Flooding

@LALegault@newsie.social Apparently the public feedback has been considerable (and presumably negative), so maybe LPC rank & file can be convinced it would be a bad idea to proceed in this direction, even if Carney imagines himself to be above considering what Canadians think about his policies.

@mike805@noc.social Look into it and you'll see California's historically high energy bills are not related to renewables, but instead are thanks to predatory pricing schemes (like time-of-use pricing), increasing maintenance costs attached to outdated infrastructure, and (last but definitely not least) out-of-control AI data centre demand. That last point is the real kicker, and it's not just happening in California. People around the US are being crushed by higher power bills driven by gluttonous AI data centers. You'd think Americans would be able to muster up the spine to stand up for themselves once in a while, wouldn't you? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2025-ai-data-centers-electricity-prices/

@Beachbum@mastodon.sdf.org I appreciate the thought -- but if we don't speak up and stop him, we will share the responsibility for whatever destructive climate policies we allow him to enact.

@mike805@noc.social It's the opposite. Renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels, and dramatically reduce electric bills (e.g., areas in Australia have so much excess solar energy they're giving customers three hours free every day). Meanwhile, the compounding costs of the climate crisis -- widespread damages to health, insurance rates leaping up, collapsing fisheries, failed crops, water shortages, out of control utility bills -- are collectively making the global cost of living crisis significantly worse. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/extreme-weather-canada-expensive-9.7261826

How extreme weather makes life more expensive for Canadians | CBC News

Wildfires in B.C. and the Northwest Territories. Floods in Manitoba. Heat waves in Eastern Canada. And it’s only early July. Such events are devastating for the people and communities affected. They’re also increasingly hitting Canadians in the wallet, according to a recent report from Statistics Canada.

@LALegault@newsie.social I'd wondered about that myself. Is it the granular focus that Carney wants, trying to pre-emptively head off legal challenges over the Specias at Risk Act, specifically?

@Snoro@mastodon.social A cringing CBC downplays the climate crisis again, as per usual. It "may be"... the "hypothesis is"... "a potential connection"... Pacific gray whales are facing a “catastrophic mortality event” as the climate crisis melts sea ice, depletes food sources and leaves the whales to starve -- on top of all the ship strikes, oil spills, microplastic pollution, algal blooms and Russian whaling already impacting populations. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jul/10/pacific-gray-whales-population-climate-change

Premier Eby must choose: climate commitments or fossil fuels

Premier Eby has a choice. He needs to show he will prioritize climate action over the fossil fuel industry.

@David@setouchi.social As the AFP reported, it's the high humidity in Japan (not just the temperatures) that makes heatwaves significantly more dangerous than in Europe. Anyway, It's the 21st century. All zoos use animals as props, and all zoos are unnecessary anachronisms. You appear to be confusing zoos with wildlife sanctuaries. They aren't: just a tiny minority of animals held in zoos are endangered, and the vast majority are held in pens to sell tickets. Europe isn't a special case. Zoos on the continent routinely kill thousands of perfectly healthy animals every year, and have been doing so for decades. Hardly in the interest of "education, preservation, reproduction, etc"; in European zoos, animals are disposable in the pursuit of maximum profit. https://www.thedodo.com/european-zoos-euthanize-over-3-445086041.html
