KPMG are amoral business consultants. They'll tell you the sky is purple and the sea is orange if they're paid enough money. The government policy on data centres is about smoke-and-mirrors. I'm a techie. I've worked in a data center. They are black holes for energy and employment. Our official policy of being a 'global leader in data centers' is akin to leading the world in landfill sites. Not our data. @TallSimon@mstdn.ca Hmmm...the AI industry does have the hallmark of a ponzi scheme. Nonetheless, there is utility in AI. The biggest issue i see; the Chinese are winning the online AI race hands-down IMO. They do it Better. Safer. Cheaper. The future of the industry is open-source, private, LLM's that run on the user's own GPU (computer graphics card). The data centers are just unnecessary edifices to #Trumptech

Like you mentioned; possible uses would be ad fraud, cryptography, ddos attacks etc. Is Popa linked to IP Royal or another proxy site? This raises serious questions for the Data Protection Commissioner in Europe i'd imagine... Is the open-proxy hijacking of your tv system clearly spelled out in the terms and conditions of these apps? What does their privacy policy say?

For me personally, I don't find the quote or account suspensions described in the Wikipedia article, particularly controversial or malicious. Privacy is not binary. Just because #Proton only gets 80% privacy score. it doesn't justify switching to #apple or #Google - both of whom score 0% IMHO. Maybe consider giving #Proton another look? 🤔🥰

Am i missing something? Also, whats the difference between a hijacked botnet node and a simple open peer-to-peer node eg. WebRTC, VOIP app, or crypto node?

The biggest issue is the possible hosting of illegal or unethical material... Two paradigms spring to mind: A community similar to couchsurfing where you build trust. Or a server version of dumpster diving. You find unused or hidden power sockets in busy buildings. Place a 'Do Not Unplug' sticker on the mini-PC and hope for the best... 😍

As an Irish techie. I whole-heartedly agree with the author of this piece.

the Data Protection Commissioner in Ireland needs to actually grow a pair of balls. It's embarrasing!

...for freedom of speech and democracy.

NB: the author didn't mention the time the Irish government took a case against the European Commission to disclaim the €13 billion awarded to the Irish people in outstanding corporate tax by Apple.
