My partner echoed a TikTok going around about how, in English, we don’t have a dedicated word for “the day after tomorrow” but we do have them for silly things like “throwing someone out a window” After some research she found “Overmorrow” from Olde English for the first one, and I think it’s time to bring it back.

welp. I was told this morning by a colleague who wanted me to consult for their startup (of six people, which they are the founder/CEO of) that one of their investors vetoed the contract we had worked out because, and I quote, “he’s a fucking luddite who slanders AI on his blog” chat, I’ve posted links to anti-LLM pieces at least I have something new for my bio

< your essay is good but you obviously used an LLM to write it – look at all those em dashes!

a: it was published in 2015. Here's the discussion on Hacker News to prove I didn't backdate it

b: those are en-dashes, not em-dashes. You imbecile. You absolute tool.

I found a device/bandwidth breakdown in some obscure page of the router's admin interface the dishwasher's used 700+GB in the last howeverlong, my laptop using 43GB in the same time period my partner got this dishwasher a few years ago after reading many reviews; I've never liked it much but I liked it even less after discovering you had to use the app – via the internet – to do a rinse cycle or a self-clean I'm not sure how it could have become compromised; we keep all our stuff up-to-date, I don't let untrusted stuff on the network, and the only android device we have is an MP3 player / e-reader for the kid for which you can only install apps via sideloading APKs via miniSD Then again, it's a dishwasher company writing software in the age of vibecoding, so who knows, maybe it self-compromised

I'm seeing some people I used to trust on LinkedIn start to realize the whole LLM coding thing ain't working out like they thought it would. Not many, but it's a start

It is so, so tempting to post receipts of their all-in posts, calling the rest of us “incurious" over the realizations they are now coming to, with a demand for a retrospective "how are you ensuring you won't fall for this type of bullshit again?”

The bridges are already gone, they burned those unintentionally, and I'm not sure they realize that, yet

hey, if you make software with a user interface that displays text, I need you to do something:

make your base font-size user-configurable

*you* might be able to read six-point type, but “just lower your screen resolution HUR DURRR" is not the appropriate answer to "how do I make the text in your app bigger?”

I’ve forced myself to learn to cook over the past few years, something of a challenge for people with #adhd because, well, cooking requires really good time management. I’ve been getting better

Tonight I tackled my first pie, and from scratch; my kid of course wanted the one with a meringue topping (a S’mores pie recipe from America’s Test Kitchen), and it turned out well

a passion project of late has been a keyboard-driven GUI file manager in the vein of ranger or yazi

There are a lot of "finder, but better" apps (on macOS, at least)
a lot of norton commander clones
a lot of windows explorer clones

but nothing like this for the gui

and a lot of things I do on the computer benefit from the gui environment and OS integration

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, it's still very much pre-alpha quality; I'm using it daily and already find it useful but I also keep hourly backups in case things go sideways

I'm doing this with Rust and egui, and it's been a fun learning process

@technomancy I'm unaware of how to do this in any browser without a user stylesheet (which, 30 years later, what the actual fuck?), but I have in my user stylesheet p { max-width: 60em; } which applies to any page styled or not, but I figure if someone is styling pages and have text that long, they don't know what they're doing and fuck them

I'm really amused at the number of voicemails I get – even from legit callers – who think they're talking to a person: Hello? Helloooo?

I get that this is because their robocaller is waiting for the thing to pickup before dispatching the call to a person, but you'd think more people would understand that voicemail is a thing

@joshsusser oh which reminds me, if you can find a version of it with subtitles (or you speak really good Spanish), the movie Nueve Reinas by Argentinian director Fabián Bielinsky is one of the finest heist dramas ever made.

@n1xnx@tilde.zone good luck trying to find one these days I said this elsewhere, but You know, this particular dishwasher was at the time the recommended pick of multiple review outlets; and nowhere did any of them mention, nor did any of the pre-available marketing material or anything my partner could find online, the fact that running just the rinse cycle or the self-clean function required an app to make it work Shit, it wasn’t even connected to the internet until my partner was trying to figure out how to do just a rinse cycle. She’s very sensitive to smells and apparently some of the dishes one time didn’t come out smelling quite as clean as normal. Thus, the damned thing went on the guest network If we had a review culture that cared about these things, if we had a functioning regulatory body to bring criminal charges against companies like BrightData, or to penalize companies for malfunctions that cause damage, perhaps this wouldn’t have happened. I want to go to there
