I write, make, draw, play, game, and do handsome faces. I made Hive Time. Currently making Fossil Sweeper (a game about digging up fossils), Winter's Wake & Icicle (and a stack of side things).

Art, game dev, and gaming videos posted to @cheeseness

If I appear to have boosted or engaged with LLM slop, please let me know. Obviously I do my best to avoid it, but douchecanoes are actively working to make that harder.

#nobridge should not be necessary -_-

@gedeonm@mastodon.social I think I was a little too young to appreciate what the "no one" change represented, but I giving one of my original series Star Trek toys to my best friend earlier in the day to celebrate and feeling like something momentous was coming. Encounter at Farpoint has its issues, but is exciting and IMO does a great job of presenting competent people out of their depth (something less prominent after seasons 1 and 2) wrestling with complicated issues while trying to hold true to their values

I finished my second reading of Children of Memory last night. Once again, I had to parse most of the second half of the book through a river of tears. Every book in this series so far has moved me, but this one in particular reaches/resonates at a very deep level for me. I think I'll give this some time to settle before diving into the 4th book, which came out recently.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io I often find that much of my creative work happens when I'm not actually engaging in the process - it's when I'm out for a walk, or in the shower or taking a break to water my plants. Even for very immediate work like sculpting or painting, I'll still stop to consider/reflect/meditate on what I'm doing. I'd go so far s to say that inefficiency might be fundamental to creativity as I express it (even the things I do fluidly, without thinking are the result of so much practice)

@vampiress@eigenmagic.net 100%, and in addition, you're informed by all the insights you have along the way, while you're looking at unfinished stuff, while you're typing out a boilerplate line, while you're taking a break, etc. etc.. Skipping to the end misses out on all the interesting stuff along the way that ends up playing such a big role in any creative endeavour IMO

Every time I see a creative tool embrace a non-hostile relationship with one of these copyright laundering machine vendors, the world gets a little bit smaller.

@khleedril@cyberplace.social @inthehands@hachyderm.io I like to think of it more along the lines of "pacing" rather than "procrastination." That helps me appreciate that there are aspects of balance that need to be maintained in order for me to function well (both within my creative endeavours and for life in general).

I'm reminded that my brief interactions with institutionalised schooling were dominated by being bullied/ostracised for being interested in or caring about stuff. At the time, I interpreted that as ignorance, and while it was unpleasant, I was pretty insulated against it It was so normalised though that I have to imagine that it planted seeds for many, who'd grow up to feel uncomfortable being open about their cares/passions. It's hard to not draw a line between that and some societal problems

@doctormo@floss.social That is a bummer. I don't imagine I have the kind of resources/attention the project needs, but any support that's within my power to offer, I'll do so. I know there's more involved than just getting repos moved, but FWIW, I know Codeberg has automated GitLab migration workflow (but haven't used myself yet) https://docs.codeberg.org/advanced/migrating-repos/#migrating-from-services

RE: @esoastronomy@mastodon.social

Betty Kioko says a lot of things here that resonate with me personally, not only about potatoes 🥔, but also about the night sky being an intrinsic part of the heritage we have inherited as humans 🌌 and the responsibility we should feel for preserving it.

@3TomatoesShort@disabled.social I felt like I didn't quite have the character count to express that I find sharing negative stuff with people I have some positive context for to be very powerful and meaningful - it's just that I find that a lot harder to do with people that I don't have context for/connection to (and most often, I build that initial connection through something positive - even if that's just excitement at finding someone who has shared experiences). Shared understanding is important for sure

@memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place It is a shame that the world got hyperfixated on miniturisation. I don't have the perspective to say where the best place to draw a line would be (it's too convenient that my preferences align with what was around when I was a kid), but we're clearly not in a healthy or sustainable place at the moment.

@ChateauErin I just try to be mindful of what I'm participating in at a cultural level - it's easy for this sort of stuff to end up fetishised, and it's more than a little creepy to see people making YouTube ad revenue, etc. off clips of it. Feels healthy to have mixed feelings.

@memoriesin8bit@mastodon.gamedev.place 100%! The "what was around when I was a kid" thing seems to be very strong regardless of how old one is. I grew up in the 80s, and so 80s stuff feels natural to me. The idea of hand-wound memory seems like too much, but I imagine there are people older than me who'd see that as a far healthier place to return to. I often think about what the impact would have been if right to repair had become normalised in the 70s/80s/90s alongside the rise of microcomputers

@ChateauErin It was while naming some craters as they passed the furthest that humans had been from earth. I thought I was watching it live, but when I looked back at the live broadcast, it had a "previously recorded" stamp on it, so I'm not sure. Many mixed feeling about sharing that man's personal pain, but it is a moment of true humanity. I hope it all gives some solace to Wiseman and his family https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEKNZAvS3cg

@mushroom_man@infosec.exchange In the minds of the people I've spoken to who say "it's just a tool" to shut down others, lots - the thought is to convey in discussions with such people that a thing having some practical value doesn't override its harms. Personally I see nothing worthwhile coming from the platforms we're talking about (I can entertain the idea that bespoke LLM usage in medical research may have enabled some worthwhile stuff, but that seems entirely distinct from the kind of "AI" being discussed)
