Good to see The Star making the obvious but vital point about Carney's sell-off of airports.
(Maybe discouraging flying is part of a completely covert green agenda, which I would support, but I doubt it.)

Yes. The idea that this will "free up" other money is utter BS, especially when he's cutting their tax rate to almost nothing. The government can create all the money it needs. It doesn't need to do this. Doing it is purely ideological.

Yes, things like this and the 'news' channels that run constant chyrons of headlines, stock reports, traffic cams, etc., all add up to the visual equivalent of Bannon's "flood the zone with shit," keeping you feeling overwhelmed and helpless. I hate that they're ubiquitous in waiting rooms (insult upon insult), gyms and other public spaces.

This makes it even worse. Burned soil is even less able to support forest recovery.
"Since so much of what’s burning lies underground, better managed forests won’t necessarily solve the core problem: only steep cuts to global emissions can..."

Many cities have these buried uban streams. Toronto, despite it's many ravines, also has them and excessive amounts of paving. The city has made efforts to address the risk but as the climate gets more extreme it's probably only a matter of time before flooding like this happens here, too.

So very Stephen Harper-ish of Carney, selling off public assets for temporary gain. He would do well to reflect on the budget hole Harper left behind.
And he would do well, too, to go back to managing money rather than trying to run government like a business.

Yes. I just read precisely that in our local Toronto paper this morning in response to a column about new nuclear costs. If there's one thing the nuclear business is very good at, it is getting its workers to churn out propaganda disguised as personal comments.

My instant reaction to the idea that people are inherently selfish is denial, but of course as babies we are all totally selfish, and the process of "growing up" is one of learning to accept the equal reality of others. Sadly, many never fully achieve this, with the consequences all around us. Indeed, there is much in our society which benefits from and encourages not growing up.

@TrueNorthSpice@mastodon.world There’s far too much of dividing full-time jobs into part-time ones to avoid paying benefits, etc.. Whole generations will age with nothing to fall back on. Given how much the labour force and social needs have changed in recent decades, we really need to do a complete re-examination if this system. It’s unlikely, I know, with the current political leaders, but we need it nonetheless.

This stood out for me:
"Marxist thinkers have been good at exposing the capitalist mode of production as historical and therefore transformable rather than naturally ordained. They have been less consistent and progressive, in my opinion, in treating the consumer culture created by capitalism as if it were the ‘naturally’ determined form of the ‘good life’ that could and should be endlessly expanded and provided for all in a post-capitalist global order."

So much for diversifying our economy and trade.

Part of the resistance to AI, thus, has to be preparing for the threat of austerity/fascism when the bubble bursts. Instead we must prepare to demand that governments flood the economy with money while taxing the billionaires out of existence. Then comes the work of recovery.

For those with the binary "you're for us or against us" mindset, multi-polar politics are too complicated and must be eliminated.
Trust between nations, as with people, is hard won, easily lost. No mater how much we trust others, we all have our boundaries and defensive strategies. It's hard to trust people with an "open carry" lifestyle.
