@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green True, but there is a reason for all that crap: The process of determining which data should be deleted may well require more resources than just storing it. It could take many weeks of labor to scour through folders full of "copy of copy of invoice (3).pdf" and the like, but it costs next to nothing to stick another drive in the array.

@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social This, as I have posted many times in many sites, is the great paradox of Elon. By any measure he has won at life. Unimaginable wealth. Political power. Other people play with model rockets as a hobby, he plays with them full size. And yet, however much he wins, he remains a loser. This is his nature. It drips from him. He radiates sheer pathetic loser energy, pulsing forth with every word uttered. He will always be a loser, and no mountain of wealth can change or conceal this.

(My own workplace has this, not out of any deceptive plan, but because so many people were throwing food in the paper bins that the recycling firm rejected us as irredeemably contaminated.)

The attempt failed, but Trump never faced any consequences for this, as he still had control of the Republican party who were able to obstruct all investigation - and then he later pardoned all involved.

Companies setting their customer support bot with a fake name and personality so customers won't realise they are being dumped on an AI. And the tide of slop in all forms because making a million short videos of cute kittens for social media can, if you get the business right, make a lot of money from suckers who don't realise those cats are lies.

@kaye@cathode.church It may be a different matter on sites which have a much wider audience. General news sites, social media, shopping. There's no clearly-defined demographic for those, so more personally targeted advertising would have an apparent advantage.

@yo_bj This is going on in the school I work at too. We signed every teacher up for TeachMateAI, a resource that generates lesson plans and tests, and Gemini for Education. Someone at the head office is tracking usage, and last module had a staff meeting where teachers were all warned that uptake of the new tools is below expectation and teachers who have not demonstrated sufficient use of the new technology will be given additional mandatory training.

A perfect example of how to write news headlines with an information gap.

What popular travel item? What airline? The headline can't tell you - if it did, you'd have no reason to read the story. Better to keep the mystery and let people's curiosity guide them into clicking.

If the manipulation isn't so obvious people won't even realise they are being played.

Just read a BBC article and comments on energy costs and government support. Most of the comments are classic complaints about working people's money being stolen and given to useless people on benefits. And a good part of those specifically single out immigrants and refugees, expressing fury that tax money might be used to assist such undeserving scum. I know the UK has a proud history of hate and especially xenophobia, but it's growing a bit worse every year.

I made a thing. Out of a shipping pallet.

I now know the difference between cheap scrap wood and good quality wood: A £6 tub of wood stain.

This structure shall be installed above a gate to stop intruders from climbing over it.

Human creativity was thought to be something special, bordering on spiritual. The ability to imagine something new and craft a great work of art was something unique to the human mind, beyond what any mechanism or mere animal could achieve. And maybe if we had the sci-fi version of AI, it wouldn't be so bad. But, no. Turns out that a simple regression solver can make passable art, music and writing - and it does so without any of the magic of sentience required. Just a lot of very basic math.

Project Clear the Alley hit a problem: A neighbour pointed out that some residents actually want the alley to be impassable, because of concerns over thieves using it to access back gardens.

The neighbour did throw in a bit of casual racism to make it quite clear which ethnicity he believes is responsible for the thieving, but even so, it is a valid concern.

Well, then. I'm going to have to do something about the flimsy wooden gate, adding bolts and concrete fixtures and spikey bits on top.

@alienmelon@mastodon.social Just about everything in the app store (either platform) is some sort of rip-off, because the platform is just not made to encourage developers to give away their work. Everything there is focused on monetisation. Your app is just going to languish in obscurity if you don't pay money to promote it somehow anyway, so there's no point making one that won't pay for that.

Something once thought to be so special to the worth of humans that it could inspire true awe is now exposed as largely approximately by a mathematical function. And one simple enough in concept that there can be no magical intellect lucking in the cervices. Ok, it's not as good as a really practiced human artist - but it's close enough for commercial work. If simple dumb slop-factory can produce an output that is hard to distinguish from that of a human, is the human really more intelligent?

There is no obvious way to be rid of it other than than the compete the 'helpful' process of looking at the suggested apps. The notification cannot be be dismissed normally. It stays, perpetually reminding you to set up your new upgrade, until you go through the list of apps engineered to trick you in to 'voluntarily' accepting to install them all.

Leaves blacken under the toxic mist. As long as I stay clear of any eco do-gooders wearing power rings, I should be good. Also looked up the mystery of the ivy. Turns out the stuff is practically immune to weedkiller. The waxy cuticle on the leaves means it won't absorb at all. I'm going to have to get more physical on that. Once my blight has set in, I'll be going through and uprooting everything. I just want to make sure it all stays very very dead and doesn't grow back.

Catering's printer filled the waste toner bucket.

No printer means no price labels, no allergy labels, and thus no food for anyone. The catering printer is critical infrastructure. So of course there is no spare toner bucket.

Once one thing for it then.

There is toner everywhere. I look like a coal miner. My clothes are covered. Everything I touched is covered. I've had to throw buckets of water over the outside area where I worked to wash away the toner, which only turned it in to a sludge.

@tommorris It's more like cars. We built a society where almost every adult needs to drive. If you don't own a car it's difficult to even find work. So while driving tests exist, they also need to be easy enough that everyone can pass. If that means a few thousand people dying each year, that's just an acceptable sacrifice in the name of economic progress.

The site rewrite is done. Now people can not care about my site in two protocols. At least it looks neater. I shall have to release my gemtext to html converter.

Many such scripts exist, but they all share the flaw of being written in python and not perl. This is the sort of thing perl was written for.

It just threw a bunch more at me. "Feminist HR Team Bans 'Bro Culture' and Is STUNNED When Male Bonding Moves to Secret Slack Channels" and "I worked for DEI - what I reveal will shock you." I don't watch any of these, at least longer than it takes me to realise they are crap. If I did, youtube would probably be on to giving me full-blown neo-nazi videos by now. Anyway, time to pack up, rambling complaining done for now.

Notice the lack of an uneasy select button on the 'popular' apps. The only way to un-select is to press each individually, press the button in there to reject the app, press again to confirm, press again to go back. It fifteen taps in total to refuse all of the apps which are selected to install by default. But only one tap to install them all. Fucking enshittification. This is why tech is not fun any more. It isn't built to make the world better, it is built to squeeze 'value' from people.

@emilymbender There may be few good use cases, but there are many, many bad use cases. Uses that are personally and socially destructive, counterproductive, ineffective but - most importantly - profitable. You can use them to manipulate the lonely into spending money on a premium tier sim-partner. Or to generate social media spam of such quality as to be undetectable while it manipulates perceived consensus. Or rapidly clone a popular publication without technically infringing copyright.

Bleh.

As expected, the "We aren't fascists, we just want to purify British culture of forigners and perverts" party has made the sort of electoral showing that firmly establishes their viability. No longer a mere fringe protest party, but a serious player in British politics.

We aren't at the stage of death camps and purges yet, but the possibility of them is on the horizon.

Parent phones school to complain "One of the other boys called my boy a racist!" After some investigating, it was found the the boy in question is, in fact, a racist. Or at least a xenophobe, which is a subtle distinction. And this is why schools log all electronic communications. We don't need to deal with heresay and rumor when it's all nicely and conveniently recorded.
