@troed@swecyb.com @zeenix@toot.cat There's also a lot of hostility from the pro-AI zealots (which is not the same as "people who think LLMs are useful tools", which in turn is a group that includes me) -- I'm increasingly getting the feeling that somewhere, there are interests which are somehow deliberately sowing anger and resentment all around this topic.
I can only speculate about the motivations, though there is at least one maybe-obvious candidate.

Yeah, I've been saying "satire is dead" for awhile now -- it kinda depends on exaggerating bad actions in order to reveal their terribleness, but that no longer works when any exaggeration you can think of is at least highly plausible and possibly something they're already literally doing.

Here in the US, we used to have an "Office of Technology Assesment" which could produce explainers like that for Congress. It apparently had a tiny budget and yet was very useful.
It was dismantled in 1995 by the newly-dominant GOP who, according to Science magazine, saw it as "duplicative, wasteful, and biased against their party."
The final part of that, to my mind, has always been the tell.

At the org we're slowly assembling, the plan is to build the work around the people. Find good people you can trust to be diligent, give them a choice of problems to solve and resources to work with, and then let them figure out how to proceed.

Someone apparently did a little research via LLM, and posted it on X-Twitter for some reason (I can't remember the name of that site which lets you not link directly to X-Twit or else I'd use it) -- it does include source-links.

All I can find quickly is this -- https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/02/1166980 -- from which I gather that experts have testified to the UN along the lines described in the meme, but as far as I can tell the UN has not ruled on the matter.
...but that article is from February.

I almost mentioned Delphi -- but for some reason I never could get into it, and then VB6 basically adopted the paradigm... which I guess means that Delphi literally was the future of programming.
VBA (especially in MS Access) probably deserves a footnote, too.

I strongly suspect that a lot of it has to do with having been raised with authoritarian ideas, especially:
beliefs about reality should be accepted from one's authorities, not from examination of evidence.power and social standing (artificial consequences) matter more than natural consequences
TLDR: they think differently about the world than we do. Once you understand that, their actions make a lot more sense (even if they're no less awful).

Yup! They believe that police (and government in general) are here to serve the "good guys" aka the powerful. Laws are for the strong to use in protecting themselves against the weak (as if that made any dang sense, but here we are).

The DoE is of course now entirely political, at least in its public-facing parts. Nobody should be taking any federal agency seriously until there's regime change.

...and I think your analogy is especially helpful in that it doesn't take the extremist "AI is all automatically crap and bad" POV but rather "AI is a tool to be used only with great care, because it can really wreck things when misused and it costs a lot of resources but there is nonetheless a lot of value in it when used appropriately". ...or something along those lines.

I did a fediblock (limit only -- I want the conversation to remain for reference purposes) entirely on my own initiative -- but as always this decision is reversible, so please feel free to chime in if you think I should (TC users especially).
Does anyone know of a good tool for archiving discussions in text format?
(...and... dang it, I really need to bookmark that graphical-archiving bot on Mathstodon, because I keep forgetting its name.)

@quinn@social.circl.lu So many problems that are popularly blamed on individuals or even easily-identifiable groups are really systemic problems at the core.
I've kinda gotten in the habit of always looking for the systemic issue, whenever I find myself blaming a group or individual: How did that group or individual gain enough power to be the problem's epicenter in the first place?
