When I drive a car without a valid driver's license, proof of insurance or tag/license plate, I get stopped by the police, my car will be towed and I can either walk home or might end up in jail and face severe fines, a probation period and loss of my driver's license. When Microsoft runs 45 gas turbines without a state permit, they get 45 days to fix it and a $1.07M fine (which is petty cash for an operation this size) and don't even have to power down the turbines. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/sep/25/new-jersey-fines-datacenter-unpermitted-generators

At the core of the global internet are the DNS root servers. These 13 go-to places are at the top of authority when it comes to making sure you can connect to any server with a domain name. What you might not know is that 10 of these 13 root servers are ultimately under US jurisdiction. Should that worry you? I guess not, the current system is quite robust. But I deal in risk assessment and probabilities. And I think this isn't an ideal setup. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_name_server #DNS #Centralisation

PIR, the Public Interest Registry ("Based in Reston, Virginia, Public Interest Registry is a nonprofit organization created by the Internet Society to manage the .ORG domain."), seems to have put autistici.org on status serverHold and that is why you cannot resolve their name anymore. This is what can happen to your .org domain name when the Trump administration decides to add you to the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) list.

My Cute Homelab (updated)

As I experiment a lot with open source solutions, I am always in need of a bit of compute power to run stuff on. Nowadays, with containers and automation through CI/CD, that has become a lot simpler compared to, say, 5-10 years ago. You just need a few simple, but powerful enough machines, a bit of networking and you can play around. So. Let me explain my current homelab setup. Updated 2025-07-21.

For MacOS users (in the EU): Go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy, switch that ON to get access to the settings, go to Siri and now you can disable Writing Assistance and a bunch of other "AI" features. You can even disable Siri altogether. Why is it hidden there? I don't know.

Wouldn't it be a nice twist to take the statements of (US) Big AI very serious in a bigly way and establish the "Artificial Intelligence Convention" modelled after the Biological Weapons Convention [1]? 2/3 [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_Weapons_Convention

I am very aware of the real goal behind all those doomsday scenarios from Big AI. It's the Disney principle: "Don't allow anyone else to do what we did to the Brothers Grimm to make sure we are the only one making money that way". I also know that a global agreement against "AI" is just as ridiculous as what Big AI is telling us. But I like the "what if" way of thinking :) 3/3

"AI with LLMs were a big craze back in the roaring twenties." "Yeah, I heard of that. What happened?" "Well, turned out that they poisoned themselves by eating their own dog food. So now we can only use them to write funny alternative history stories." "And bad music." "And bad music, yep." "Interesting. Well, break's over. Back to my hoverboard to deliver some data units." "Yeah, a shame we can't have networks anymore because those old LLMs would still try to go rogue." #Microfiction #MicroSF

With a bit of luck, some of those journalists losing White House access will recognise that their true calling isn’t a comfy seat in the chocolate factory and that they can use their new found freedom to connect to more sources in the Trump galaxy that have grudges after being treated in bad ways and we will soon see hard-hitting reports that will finally end his rule. #AlwaysTheOptimist

@hpod16@eupolicy.social One concern is that in its current form, this act means that operators of Fediverse instances are made responsible to ensure that children below the age of 18 cannot make public posts. To properly do this, it means we, the admins, must do age checks on every signup and implement features to limit posts and interactions across all parties we federate with.

Yesterday I updated and rebooted my Linux servers (as I do every Friday), today I descaled and cleaned my water cooker, the ice cube maker and the Moccamaster (as I do every month, we have very hard water here in Munich). These regular chores always give me a moment of peace. No matter what happens around me, some things just have their fixed place in life and that’s a good thing. #PhilosophyMoment

One of the reasons is that here in Europe I see a lot of the same people in the Digital Sovereignty field that I already know from the National Cloud movement around 7-10 years ago. Because there seems to be a bit of confusion. Open Weight LLMs (Large Language Models) is just a fancy word for "models you can download and run locally on your machines". Closed Weight is just a fancy word for MaaS, Models as a Service, that run remotely on machines from the vendor. Hope that helps! Open Source models are a very different topic. It means you not only get the trained model but also (access to) the training data itself. But that is all a bit undefined in reality. 1/2

Bitte keine Prepper/Doomsday Antworten.
