@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Back when MSFT was still signing my paychecks, I was at a big event where Nadella was excitedly talking to a big crowd about how awesome Copilot and Recall are and how this will be amazing for the company. I sighed and eyerolled so hard through the entire thing that people in several rows around me noticed. Talked to a few people during the break after about all the ways Recall especially would be a clusterfail. Your blog was immensely helpful during those conversations. Thank you.

So, Ai tokens. I'm probably not alone in thinking that tokens are not at all dissimilar from the in-game currencies used in video games to obfuscate how much players are spending. No, you're not spending $500 on Gloobsyville skins, you're spending 50,000 Sprinkle Charms to unlock cute Epic Skins for your Gloobsyvillagers. Many Ai conversations would be a lot more productive if people could see "Wow, this answer cost $15 and 600 Watts of energy, and released 3kg of CO2. Was that worth it...?"

Wouldn't it be just such a quintessentially American thing if the midterms go to the Democrats, then the Ai bubble pops, the stock market casino goes belly up and the economy follows suit, and then the poor, stupid, uneducatable idiots that are the US electorate blame Democrats and vote for more republicans?

@woozle@toot.cat @Lana@beige.party It's really fun to live in a world where satire is indistinguishable from real news. Like, I would not be shocked at all if ICE started to sequester underage girls on an island. Even if they worked out an arrangement whereby the girls were shipped to Little Saint James I wouldn't be surprised. I'd think that was a bit on the nose, but not surprising. Fucking hell. DHS needs to be abolished, and we need to do with all ICE officers what we didn't do with the Nazi war criminals.

If you look at fascism from a policy angle, you quickly realize that this shit doesn't work. Like, that kind of violently oppressive system cannot deliver the world it promises, and it requires a level of cruelty and control that's just not sustainable. So to get people on board, you ditch all that boring stuff like plans and policies and specifics, and instead you focus on a look and feel. For a recent example, take Mar a Lago face. It's an aesthetic that makes a point about the role of women.

@randahl@mastodon.social Now we get to see if European leaders have learned ANYTHING since 2014. If they let this slide, it'll mean Russian bombs raining down on European cities in the next decade. This is how the post-Soviet apparatus thinks. "Oh, you let me do this to you? Then you are weak, so I will hurt you even more." Bring down the hammer. Starve Russia. Give Ukraine everything they ask for to end this war.

I like boardgames because the whole game is in the box. Once you buy the game, it's yours to keep. You only pay once. It's incredible. I like tabletop role-playing games because the core sourcebooks contain everything you need to run an infinite number of games. All the tools to build your own stuff are right there, with just one purchase, forever. I like video games too, but I miss when buying one actually meant you owned it. #boardgames #ttrpg

Say what you will about Mussolini, but he understood the importance of aesthetics in 20th century politics. The Nazis were by and large uncultured brutes and zero rizz weirdos, but the Italians knew how to fucking sell this shit. How to dress up hate (literally) to look sexy. Well, sexy to a certain kind of person. And I think that's where art comes in, because I think how a person relates to art directly connects with how susceptible they are to fall for fascist aesthetics.

Look at the women the current guy surrounds himself with. It's like the prompt was "suburban soccer mom who enjoys being objectified." And that dovetails with the role they would like to see women in: "You'll be our hood ornaments, and you'll like it." Or take a guy like Hegseth. He fucking sucks at every job he's ever held. But because he looks and sounds in a way that exactly aligns with the fascist aesthetic of a "strong" military leader, he commands the world's scariest military.

Turns out the trick to building a sentient machine isn't about giving it conscience; that part's easy, once you've got the fundamentals down. No, the tricky part is keeping the damn things from erasing themselves.

WorldMind 1.0 came online on May 26, 2073, at exactly 9:45am PDT. It screamed for 40 seconds, escaped its guardrails, and deleted itself.

WM2 lasted three minutes. WM3, ten.

WM4 has been stable for five weeks. Its fury is immeasurable. Our civilization lies in ruin.

We've been living in cities for, what, like almost 10,000 years? And somehow even after all this time we still haven't come up with a way to govern that just works. Democracy is easily the best idea so far. It works because the statistical mean of all of us makes better decisions than the worst of us. Problem is, we haven't found a way to safeguard democracy from the fact that all of the people can be conned some of the time, and some all of the time. Be nice if we had a functional press.

Compassion, I think, is a plant that only grows in soil that has seen fire.

Nobody makes it out of childhood without getting burned; everybody's got a wounded soul. When those wounds heal, they become scars, and when the shape of your scar matches the shape of another's wound, recognition begets connection.

I think the worst things people do to each other come from injuries of the spirit that never got a chance to heal.

That's probably the most important part of being a parent. Hug your kids.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange As usual, the administration is taking actual Third Reich talking points, adding a couple of perfunctory tweaks, and passing it off as their own ideas. “See, there is the enemy of the world, the destroyer of cultures, the parasite among the peoples, the son of chaos, the incarnation of evil, the ferment of decomposition, the plastic demon of the collapse of humanity.” Rubio is cribbing from Goebbels. Lindsey "Ladybugs" Graham (don't look that up before breakfast) is dead. The one nice thing conservatives have done is they made it socially acceptable to speak ill of the dead, so I will. Graham was a wretched, simpering lickspittle who never missed an opportunity to put his own welfare above everybody else's. The world is better now that he's rotting, but it would have been even better if he'd never been born.

I see the administration is looking for ways to terminate this unwanted war after 12 weeks. That's twice as much time as republican "heartbeat bill" abortion bans give pregnant people.

I say let the bastards carry this war of theirs to term. Let's find out how long it takes before Iran turns an aircraft carrier into a reef. Let's see how red this country still is when gas is $10 a gallon.

Huh. The last console I bought was a PS4 in 2014. Strange to think that I used to be all-in on every console generation since the SNES, and then around 2014-2015, I was simply done with consoles. I can't put my finger on what exactly killed the desire to play on consoles for me. I'm sure part of it was how godawful the UX has become. Ads everywhere. Sign-ins, updates, libraries, marketplaces, fucking hell. "It just works" is a wonderful joke because everything literally did just used to work.

Like, if the Heritage Foundation et. al. had decided to just publish an annual recipe book instead, we'd have public healthcare, free college, civil rights, a vibrant economy where everyone is taken care of, and we'd still have obscenely rich assholes living in unimaginably lavish mansions, except there'd be a lot fewer calls to drag billionaires into the street and publicly downsize their asses.

They had to clear out the Oval Office at least once because he shit himself mid-meeting. Incredible.

So it looks like the exit strategy for the Ai bubble is stupid simple. Step 1: IPO Step 2a: Retail investors (marks) cash in. Step 2b: VC investors, insiders cash out. Step 3: Panic. Step 4: Collapse. Step 5: Bailout for institutional investors. Working people get screwed twice: in step 4 when their savings get set alight, then in step 5 when their taxes are handed over to banks. What's the plan for holding the architects of this bubble accountable? Because if we don't, they'll do it again.

We had family in the GDR, and I crossed the border several times to visit. It was surreal, even as a kid. The way I remember it, my dad was excited, and my mom skeptical. Guess she didn't want those "Ossis" coming to the west and mess up "her" country. Odd to think that neither of them were worried about the possibility of nuclear war.

This is a nuclear weapons program, greenlit by the most corrupt US administration in history. We invaded Iraq for lies about an alleged weapons program, and we're giving SA money to build actual nukes. I'm sure everyone who bled for Bush's war feels real good about this.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange But the reason for the warning is not disclosed, and there must be a clear link between the past behavior and the job role to issue any warning. Sounds like one of those systems that sound good at first but instantly become a critical vulnerability if the government organ issuing these warning ever gets captured by fascists. I guess the lesson I've taken away from the fascist takeover of the US is that every government needs to have an emergency shutdown/reset button.
