Never listened to the ones before me, never listened to the self-ordained, never really wanted to believe it anyway...
He/him/they/them, strong opinions about things and stuff, cats, music, and F&SF that makes your brain go *oof*.

@_thegeoff@mastodon.social @xerge@mastodon.nl @geekysteven@beige.party Also, everything will become crystal clear as soon as we figure out crystals. I mean, the stuff crystals are made of. Those small parts that make them up. The ones that are mostly empty space. And somewhere in there, but we can never say exactly where, there is stuff. Or there isn't. Or there is stuff, but it's actually waving at us. And vibrating. Rolled up on itself and just... shivering. And it looks like a piece of string, except it does not. And some of it is dark. Dark shivering strings that we cannot see, but we can feel them. See? Crystal clear!

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social "why do they think that putting probabilities down helps them" is a concise way of summing up all the non-thinking and non-caring that must have gone into writing this proposal up. On the one hand, I am sorry that you had to actually read it. On the other hand, I am really thankful that you will write the comment to the FCC. On the gripping hand, of course we would all have been better off if this whole idea had not been pumped up in the first place.

@woozle@toot.cat ESOP is one of the steps in that direction, and some small-to-mid sized companies have seen good things from it, but unfortunately I don't think many companies over a certain size would even consider it other than for the laughs. @Doug_Bostrom@scicomm.xyz @QasimRashid@mastodon.social

@woozle@toot.cat There's a fun corollary to that. If the government starts taking, say, 0.5% of their shares in each company they own, year after year, then it won't be very long before the government has a controlling interest in at least some of those :) @Doug_Bostrom@scicomm.xyz @QasimRashid@mastodon.social

@StarkRG But it is very simple. The alt text of the image here talks about a "root kitty". The equivalent in your distro would be a fruit bat. So it is all about the use of different parts of the plant. @dianea

@jamesbow Hm, but are you sure it always does that? Its shape is somewhat banner-like, so maybe it tries to lift or lower a banner in Arthurian Camelot first, and it only does the garage door thing if it fails - which it often does, but not always... leading to even more confusion for both the garage door owner and the independent observers. @sjolsen

@nick_appleyard @AstroKatie As I understand it (and of course ICBW), if it does indeed turn out that those galaxies are too massive, that would require a rethinking of our current understanding of how the universe formed ("the first three minutes" and all). Right now, I'd say the only answer could be "no one knows", but reworded as "we need more data" - it would be yet another case in the history of science when the widely accepted theory would be incapable of explaining the empirical evidence, so modifications would be necessary. So, no one knows :)

@Taweret@timeloop.cafe Also, it will be mandatory to arrive in time and watch all the trailers with rapt attention. Half of them will be propaganda reels or carefully presented news items reinforcing the belief in the doubleplusgood state[1]. The other half will look like actual movie trailers, but will be carefully designed to provoke reactions in the audience, all recorded to be studied later. Still, everyone will watch all of them in the desperate hope that maybe this time they will show a real trailer for a different movie. [1] That part was actually true in socialist times in the Eastern bloc.
