My opinions are purely my own and do not represent that of my employer or FOSS communities I happen to work with.
LLMs are, at best, rejection of community ethos
Firstly, you're more than entitled to that opinion. As long as you don't expect this to be shared by everyone, all is good.
The problem is that the reality doesn't care about our ethics. The undeniable fact is that LLMs give you an advantage over your opponents and this advantage is growing at a spectacular rate (so far at least). FOSS saying "no" to LLM is going to be a death sentence to it, in the (not so) long run, given that fascists are taking full advantage of LLMs.
I made a language detection app for Android. It runs completely locally and offline and I think it does a fairly good job. Google won't let me publish it on their store w/o it getting a lot of testing by many people so I really need some volunteers for this.
DM me with your email address if you want to help me out here. 🙏
Please re-toot for reach.
I beg of you. Please talk to any Iranian people you know before posting your hot takes on today's news. 🙏
The most important thing is what (the majority of) the people need and want.

MONEY U GIVE ME DO WORK
Me: Can you count your fingers?
Yasha counts all the fingers on his right hand.
Me: Now can you count all the fingers on both hands?
He counts each finger on both hands simultaneously as one. 😆 I tried to tell him but he didn't want to listen. He insists on applying parallelism to a problem that clearly doesn't need it.
I contributed a new video sink plugin to gst-plugins-rs this weekend, that allows you to play videos in your terminal. It makes use of the `viuer` crate to achieve this:

Berlin U-Bahn late at night, is sooo Berlin. You see so many colorful characters.
Had some good days in London with the family. It was their first time and they really loved it. The big ones even got to fly in a helicopter and take the controls for a bit.
"no one in the open source world saw coming"
I most certainly did! I've been saying it for a while now: these tools are improving at an exponential rate and all indications are that "slop" will soon be a thing of the past (if this rate of progress continues).

Tell yourself whatever you need to but the story of Bun's oxidation, and Zig not only losing its biggest user but potential contributions, is very much a "Adapt to the agentic era or be left behind!" story.
I understand why people are against LLMs and there's always a chance resistance can win over compliance but I predict this is not a winnable fight because of how extremely useful these tools can be and we live in a capitalist world.
Instead I see more and more developers who went from "these tools are completely useless to me" to using them regularly within a year or so.
P.s. I'm not interested in a debate here. If you disagree, just ignore me. 🙏
After watching this video, everyone should be convinced that we can replace Nebraska with Finland in the famous xkcd below:

"I didn't attack multiple people for not agreeing with me" and then attacks me for disagreeing with them, all in the same toot. 🤦♂️

Thanks to everyone who helped with testing, my language detection app is finally available on the Google Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zeenix.xabi&pcampaignid=web_share
Highlights:
* No account or setup needed.
* **Local only**: no data leaves your device[1]. All processing happens on your device.
* No in-app advertisements or purchases.
* Only €0.99 (3x less than a cup of coffee) one-time purchase and you get the app and all future updates forever for free.
[1]: If you decide to report "bad detections" then data **is** uploaded to my server but only w/ your clear consent and you can view, export and delete this data at any time.
There's no atmosphere on the moon so nothing rots away. That means there's fresh 💩 of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. 😂
That also means that if in a distant future some alien civilization wanted to recreate humans, they could do it more easily than recreating dinosaurs (or most species that ever existed on earth).
Remember, not to believe anything you hear or read today, unless it's from me. I'll never fool you. 😜
Anyone using Workbench (or any Blueprint) tools on Mac? Does it work? Can it work?

People often prefer to use interior mutability in Rust over exterior one. While this makes things in general easier to deal with, part of the reason they're easier is because they typically involve locks (mutex) and atomics. However, this also makes them less reliable because locks can deadlock. There is also a performance hit from them, which can in many cases be significant enough to care about.
A great way to think of exterior mutability and lifetimes in Rust, is as compile-time locks, ensuring you don't every have any possibility of deadlocks and they're completely free at runtime.
@swick Thanks for your detailed response. I appreciate it.
If there is a database library with an API based on string manipulation instead of prepared statements, you would never touch the project. You could equally argue that lots of people write software which uses databases but never have to care about malicious inputs.
That's a very incorrect analogy. Not caring about something is very different than not having to care about something. The issue is question does not affect the vast majority of the software out there.
Opaque handles to filesystem objects are not particularly hard to abstract in a cross-platform manner. In the worst case that handle is internally just a path.
If that's the case, it should be easy for folks who think this is a very serious issue, to create an RFC issue with suggested API instead of complaining endlessly and expecting others (who likely work in spaces this issue doesn't apply to) to do all the work? 😉
You didn't address my question about any other security issues in std than this. Talking of which, are there any statistics that back up this claim that this issue is a lot more serious than all the security and safety issues Rust eliminates by its mere presence?
If you're a Xennial like me who recently had to export all their data from skype, and you're a hopeless nerd like me as well so like cmdline interfaces, you may find this useful:
I added glib (well gvariant) to dbus byte encoding benchmarks recently and (not so surprisingly) it's quite bad in comparison to almost all other Rust D-Bus encoding APIs. In one case, we're talking 231.98 µs for zvariant vs 2.8925 ms for glib.

a friend of mine who lives in Berlin, is in a very bad state. They're having many moments of self-harm (pulling their hair mainly) and crying endlessly. They refuse to go to an ER because they think it's not urgent enough as they are not harming anyone or considering suicide (for now).
Their GP will only give appointment next week. Where could they turn?
@lcamtuf@infosec.exchange You seem to be assuming that memory safety is the only benefit of Rust.
@swick I only know one very specific fs API "issue" that Lennart keeps talking about and that one:
- Is not an issue for a vast majority of software and hence why nobody thinks about it.
- Can be easily prevented by using a crate specifically designed for it.
- IIRC hard to abstract in a cross-platform manner.
Are there other issues like that that exist "because of std"?
