I just had "the talk" with my 9yo. He came to me asking "Dad, why does AI use so much water just for generating one answer?"
So I explained to him how LLM works, how GenAI came out of that and why AI is a marketing term and absolutely wrong in that context.
Then I loaded GPT4All on my laptop and asked the thing what the result of 9+7 is. It took my poor laptop cpu 12 seconds to come up with an answer and another 12 seconds to generate the sentence with the answer. I showed him how fast kcalc (using the CPUs ALU functions) comes up with the answer for that specific question.
And then I asked a followup question, which almost take 2 minutes to compute. I showed him how the previous question and its answer became part of the prompt which made the calculation longer more complicated just to emulate a dialoge.
He noticed that my laptops CPU fan stepped up and started to roar to get rid of the core heat. Then I explained to him how AI datacenters solve all this ineffitiency by running millions of servers in parallel and how this generates so much heat that it "uses" cooling water by just boiling it until it vapourizes.
I then explained the current business model and how the companies currently burn through their cash to be the last one standing on the market when everyone else dropped out or became bankrupt. What we user pay for using this and what we actually would have to (and in the future probably will) pay for this service.
Needless to say, my kid is not a big fan now.

This morning I put the iFixit kit, that came with the #mrmcd26 merch, to good use. First I disassembled my headphones cable so that I was able to apply shrink wrapper to glue the two cables back together where they came apart.
Then I took my wifes electronic kitchen scale apart, which seemingly died while in use. Fresh battery didn't help and after I opened the case I saw the culpit: One of the two battery cables (the positive terminal) broke. I soldered a small piece of red wire to the end to make up for the part that broke off, insulated the connection with shrink wrap, unsoldered the cable rest from the pcb and soldered the fixed cable onto the pad instead. Sure enought that did the trick, I put it back together and the scale is working again.
Thanks, @MRMCD@chaos.social! I would have had the necessary tools in my big clunky toolbox, but this is the tool that I can grab and know it contains everything I need! 😍

Also jetzt gerade!

Honestly, his dad works for (checks calendar) 28 years in IT now, mostly as sysadmin. And politicians are used to not listen to their specialists if they don't like their explanation. So I guess he has an advantage here. Also, his mum worked as a project manager in IT projects, so he already knows what a business plan is (because I'm not allowed to buy any shit unless I can present a valid usecase and how the benefits outweight the cost of buying it. This household, let me tell you... 😅😭)

I know, it mostly means talking to your kids about sex and how making babies works, unless they are PoC. Then the talk is about how to interact with cops and getting home back alive.

Oh, I use linux and have KDE Plasma installed as my current desktop environment. Kcalc IS the onboard calculator in that scenario. I thought about doing something like echo "9+7" | bc on the shell, but that felt too much for him in that situation...

Nein, Herr Merz. Falsche Antwort.
NOCHMAL!

Both significantly shorter than 26 seconds for the GPT4all solution on my laptop CPU. Do you have a point besides "Internal bash operators are obviously faster than a pipe to bc, because they don't have to load a binary and spawn a subshell for the other process to pipe data into"? Because I know that already and decided the difference is irrelevant for that specific purpose.

I mean they SHOULD know how it is. Most of them used to have VMware licensed and most of them migrated away with big pains after Broadcom blew up the license costs. What makes them believe that AI companies are playing a different game?

It will never be profitable whatsoever but I think we need to capture and convert it. And invest the energy. It's the best method to make sure this is not getting back into the atmosphere.
I don't see it as a valuable business, more like a necessity to keep us all alive.

Since it seems that we committed ourselves to crossing the +3°C border in heating the climate is fine (here in germany), we should definately work on cultural change to adopt more to heat.
Or... I know, it's a crazy idea, but MAYBE we should extremely limit our CO2 emissions and NOT cross the +3°C line, and possibly not the +2,5°C line, too... yeah, crazy, I know.

I checked with him: "To run this model I need 16 GB ram free. Let's check... Okay, no problem here, I have 20 GB unused right now. But just as a hint, remember my older laptop that I had before this one? That had 8 GB ram installed. At all! I wouldn't be able to run this on the old one."
Again, Linux. On Windows I'd never be able to have 20 GB out of 24 GB system memory free...

No, you are mistaken. We need the carbon dioxide to get out of the atmosphere and stay out of the atmosphere. That means no conversion into fuel and burn it back into the air.
It means turn it into carbon so that it can be stored without gassing out by accident reverting all the capture effort.
Using CO2 from the air for combustion fuel means "This current heat stays as it is". Storing it means "We start to revert the climate catastrophy." and the price tag for that is not measured in costs for capturing, transforming and storing, its measured in extinction prevented.

Lol, was denken die Banken eigentlich?
