Roadskater, Ph.D.

@roadskater@mastodon.social
mastodon 4.8.0-nightly.2026-10-06
  • Open on mastodon.social

Inline skating the mean streets of NYC since 1993 and still alive to kvetch about it.

During the day, webmaster for some scientists, Java netCDF dataviz and cartography coder.

Otherwise, a Jack Methodist, somewhere left of center and (sigh) a recovering Idahoan.

Plus various experiences and opinions of no merit.

@syntaxseed@phpc.social @fuzzychef@m6n.io @evacide@hachyderm.io Americans can do for some things. I pay my utility bill by logging onto my bank website. There are a few other things such as insurance where I log onto the company's website and authorize them to one-time ACH the money from my bank. The only automatic withdrawal that I have authorized is my apartment maintenance fee. Re: OP's original point. I got new checks about 12 years ago for reasons, and I probably haven't made it halfway through the first pad yet.

@hal_pomeranz@infosec.exchange You're of approx my era. Wrote my first computer program in IIRC 1977 or 78. Last time I took a programming class was 1981 — in high school, no less! And yet, here in 2026, I still make my living writing 'computer programs'. (Which, wow, 'computer programs', an ancient term for what we now call 'code') Anyhow, I still write my own code, and I pray that the library dependencies I rely on are still safe.

@adapalmer@wandering.shop Your synopsis sounds interesting, but the ecoportal.net stories that I looked at a couple weeks when someone else linked to that site, OMG, just the worst writing structure. Will not go there again. I'm told it's not AI, but if so, then wow, humans can write be trained to that bad? If you have another reference on this story, please post it.

@auxonic@ottawa.place @jessamyn@glammr.us The Strava app on my Watch was bricked by an OS update a few weeks ago. I ended up having to re-install it on both watch and iPhone, then spent far too much time re-applying app settings. So if an app on your watch is acting wonky, drastic measures might be required. Just be careful you don't delete data.

My mind was thinking 'articulated' but I tried to doublecheck. Now I'm trying to remember if I encountered 'artic' on Wikipedia or elsewhere when trying to look it up earlier. I'm in NYC, but I've heard 'semi', 'tractor-trailer' and '18-wheeler' at various times in my life. Most likely 'semi' is in my mind these days when one of those big F-ng Fedex beasts blasts by me on Amsterdam Ave at night.

(Boo, NordVPN.) I think I've had some better results with using modsecurity configured to drop the obvious scrape connections. (The request URIs are predictably F-ed up.) But there was a burst of new shit yesterday that made me wonder.

@cybergoths@dice.camp @hexaedre@dice.camp I'm still holding out with Sequoia on my two personal Macs because I know the upgrade will break the genealogy software that I've used for 15 years, as had every major macOS upgrade of the past decade or more. And it's now abandonware so there's no hope the developer will do anything about it. I was required to upgrade my office Mac to Tahoe a couple months ago. It doesn't completely suck, but, jeez, now everything on that Mac looks like the crappy MS Outlook UI.

Saturday was designed to make me feel like a slacker…

There was an #NYC #Groupskate in which at least 5 people started in the morning and rolled 100+ miles (a couple of them 120+).

And over in Minnesota, there was the NorthShore Inline Marathon in which some other people I know rolled 26 miles in less than 70 minutes.

My Saturday? I finally put on my skates around 9 p.m. and rolled a marathon distance in 190 minutes.

It only took 3 months after I was forced to upgrade my office Mac to #macOS #Tahoe for me to figure how out to get the Character Viewer to again show me Unicode code points, and even then it may have taken me 20 minutes. I needed to add a couple Polish lastnames to a publications database, and did not have ź in my website's text utilities lib.

Sure I could have looked up on the Internets, but now I know what to do when I get around to upgrading my personal Macs to #GoldenGate sooner or later.

So what makes me raise an eyebrow 🤨 is why there was bot traffic coming from those same NordVPN IPs within the previous 24 hours.
