@vikingtons@lemmy.world @Kiriko@awful.systems That link is returning 403 for me. I guess they locked it away *hard*.

@clew@ecoevo.social @jrconlin@mindof.jrconlin.com We had a coursework group project on my masters (operational research) to optimise a particular system. The trick was that the system as described was, it turned out, already running optimally. The recommended action was "no corrective action -- continue as you have been". It was a useful lesson.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems So Wine emulates the Windows API, and Wix is a packager for Windows, where Nix is a packager for Linux. Then Nix and Wix are both about packaging, where Wine is about emulation, we can conclude (by extension) that Nine is a system for emulating the Linux API.

The existence of the festival of Beltane implies festivals of Beltene, Beltanol, Beltone, Beltanal (Beltehyde) and possibly also Cyclobeltanes. #Alchemy

@jess@blop.social That whole album is spectacular.

@revk@toot.me.uk I think it's probably a psy-op from a shadowy cabal of cats, trying to shift the window.

@jplebreton@mastodon.social Aladdin is firmly in the bottle, and has been drinking his way towards the bottom of it. He has already finished several of them, and has more under the sofa where they're easy to reach.

@foone@digipres.club Are you scrumping from the tree of knowledge again?

@levork@graphics.social The idiosyncrasy that I always smile at is when someone has an accent. You're looking at, say, some Python, and you just *know* that the author started out writing Java (or C, or perl).

@bovaz@misskey.social @mjg59@nondeterministic.computer @jwz@mastodon.social Sometimes you find someone absolutely determined to reinvent a wheel. I had a looong workshop where we were planning a distributed pub/sub messaging infrastructure. Got to the end of bashing out the requirements, and I said "you've just described NNTP. Let's use NNTP." Three days of workshop later, we still weren't using NNTP.

@netkitty@meow.social @woozle@toot.cat Chaos As The Service. Now, if only there were some catchy acronym we could use for that.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io None. The train to Penzance got cancelled.

@foone@digipres.club I always wanted to register dash-dash.dot.com, so I could have help.dot.dash-dash.dot.com.

@oxy@social.bsdlab.au Like "banana", it can be hard to stop spelling Ballarallarallarallarat.

@lilithsaintcrow@raggedfeathers.com I always think it must be terrible to be an optimist, because you'll get disappointed all the time. As a pessimist, I'm leaving the door open to, very occasionally, being pleasantly surprised.

@foone@digipres.club Most computers are complete pants.

@nina_kali_nina@tech.lgbt I have a wonderful ruler, made of very thin springy steel, which is backed by a thin layer of cork. The cork is about 2mm smaller than the ruler, so the edge of the ruler doesn't touch the paper, and pens don't leak under it. Definitely recommended.

@feorag@wandering.shop It's probably shorter than the full length of a coach and four (including the horses). Maybe a bit less flexible on the corners, though.

@stux@mstdn.social My family moved house when I was 13. There was a couple over the road who'd bought theirs in the 1950s, as their first house. The woman had overspent their budget at the auction, by a massive £50, getting the house for £750. Those houses are now going for about £750,000. Accounting for inflation, they paid a little over £10,000 in today's money.

@foone@digipres.club Bonus outcome: when you find that you've run out of space and decide you have to write the code anyway, you've got the a nice complete test suite all ready.

@ana@starlite.rodeo When is your IPO? Can't wait to invest!

@jwz@mastodon.social @roadskater@mastodon.social Did you know that your sarcsamatron is glowing red and giving off smoke? You might need one of the industrial-quality upgrades.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social One thing I've learned (but don't act on the knowledge nearly enough) is that my usual quietly-understated phrasing isn't enough to deter people from doing the thing that I really don't want them to do. I am starting to try to embrace "Jesus Fucking Christ, No", rather than "I think that might not be such a good idea." It's hard, though.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social The one I'm most proud of is running my local LUG for many years, which turned into adminning the lug.org.uk servers (which is where most UK LUGs host websites and mailing lists). They're still using the logo I designed, nearly two decades later.

@futurebird@sauropods.win @davidtheeviloverlord@mastodon.social @Pineywoozle@masto.ai @jredlund@social.linux.pizza There's a monument in the old market place here in #RdgUK that has actual fasces (from which fascism was named) on it. It was built in 1804. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon_Monument

@stux@mstdn.social "Cleaner"

@the_roamer@mastodonapp.uk Except in custard, where the correct consistency is vital.

@hbons@mastodon.social In my case, no, but that's more to do with me not particularly engaging with the medium, rather than the proposed content.

@gerrykelly@mastodon.gamedev.place When MS introduced "My Documents" and all its smug little friends in Windows, I felt even then that it was somewhat condescending. I haven't changed my opinion on the matter in the decade or two since.

@futurebird@sauropods.win As the Beatles said, All you need is dove / dove is all you need.

@jess@blop.social It's a shame you're there on a Sunday. There's an excellent second-hand bookshop, but they won't be open until Tuesday, now.

@MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk Exxon is a slightly odd choice, given that their main brand in the UK is Esso.

@literalgrill@sakurajima.moe If I get bitten by one, do I eventually turn into a Hot Single myself?

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social At some point, I think you have to "set boundaries", as the phrase goes, and be *very* firm about it, in language that gets the point across to people who don't necessarily know you. "I think that might not be such a good idea" from me is equivalent to JFCN, but the seriousness of the intent gets lost in translation. This is my lesson I've had to learn. There may be shadings in between the two that get the point across, but *err on the side of clarity*. It's hard.

Today, I have been programming. #Programming #RISC_V #OldSkool

@jwz@mastodon.social Depends on the distribution of the incoming requests. If they're from the same 20 IPs (yeah, I know...), then it's a second of work to deal with the problem. If every request is from a different IP, then the work of banning them is pointless. Somewhere between the two, there's a utility to be had.

@Ninji@wuffs.org It's not the rubbish collector. It's the bin man.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social I'd be going for some blend of b, c and d. If you can't even, have you tried being odd?

@dar@mastoart.social @Geri@veganism.social "Spontaneous", my arse.

@simontatham@hachyderm.io You can do this simply and non-recursively with something like: result = values[0] for v in values[1:]: result = cross_product(result, v) def cross_product(xs, ys): result=[] for x in xs: for y in ys: result.append(x+[y]) return result But the recursive version is probably a bit more obvious.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social I went to the museum of music in Prague some years ago, and they had a bunch of pianos with weird tuning. I can't remember if quarter-tones were one of them, but they also had ones in 10-note and (I think) 14-note octaves -- custom keyboards and all. God knows what they sound like, but it's probably horrible.

@foone@digipres.club I was definitely eager to get FTTP (fibre networking all the way to the house) when they'd finally laid the cables down the street.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social I think the lesson has been learned. I'm not sure what the approach is to fixing the current situtation (other than Strong Words, or Stronger Invoicing). Good luck, is all I can say.

@grifferz@social.bitfolk.com *only*?! They can fuck right off, and when they've fucked off, they can fuck off some more.

@pseudonym@mastodon.online @ckeen@social.vernunftzentrum.de @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social It's quite satisfying, although you're generally greeted with blank incomprehension.

@klymilark@wall.fallcounty.omg.lol I'm not sure I want a whole internet. Where would I keep it? Would it have much resale value?

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social There was at least one with split-keys for pre-equal temperament, too. I can understand those. The ones in non-12-note scales, though... That's someone who studied the maths of the well-tempered scale, and threw out the underlying reason that there's 12 notes in an octave (and the problem of the Pythagorean comma, leading to the development of the well-tempered system), and just said "nah, listen, I'm going to *disrupt* this whole thing".
