@c@fedi.cpf.sh just contributed some changes to #pachli that update the set of supported features (https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/pull/2387) if your account is on a server running #iceshrimpdotnet. You can now quote, schedule posts, use supported search operators, and create filters. These changes are in Pachli Current now, and will be in the regular Pachli release at the end of this month.

#Pachli Current now highlights the hashtags you follow. Within a post any hashtags you follow are shown in bold. The info area above a post shows a hash-marker and the first followed tag in the post.

This helps answer the "Why is this post in my timeline?" question.

The attached screenshot shows an example with the #mastodev hashtag.

Thanks to @neatnit@fosstodon.org, @_nibbles@mastodon.social, and @quaff@thecanadian.social for the suggestions about this.

Quick update on the #collections support that's coming in #Pachli.

Here's two collection notifications. The first one is hidden (in this case, I hid it, but it may also have been marked sensitive) and blurred like sensitive attachments.

The background colour is to distinguish collections from quotes and link previews.

The visibility of the collection is always shown.

Still iterating on design and accessibility features, but the first Pachli Current with this should be out soon.

RE: @pachli@mastodon.social

This is more popular than I'd expected.

Normally when I introduce new options I keep the previous behaviour as the default and people have to explicitly switch to the new behaviour.

I'm considering reversing that for this change, and have underlining links be the default behaviour for all users.

Hi folks -- according to the analytics on https://pachli.app (umami.is, "No cookies, no tracking across sites, no personal data collection"), roughly 5% of this account's followers click through to read the release notes for each release.

If you're one of the 95% who isn't reading the release notes, and you have a bit of time, could you provide feedback on why you don't? I'd like them to be useful, and they highlight everyone else who has contributed to each release.

In #Android this manifests as two different ways an app can define the user interface. The writing is on the wall for the way that works ( #xml ), so it's time to (carefully) migrate to the way that doesn't work yet ( #compose ). Hopefully Compose'll work properly by the time I'm finished (this is going to be a multi-month effort over multiple releases). I've migrated the language packs preference screen to see how much work this is (https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/pull/1750) and what needs to be done.

@tiefling @leanderlindahl Tusky has a long-standing bug where some posts on your timeline just get dropped. It might be that. I think (but might be wrong) Fedilab has an option to fetch the original thread from the remote server to try and get missing messages. Recent Mastodon servers can do this too, so it shouldn't make a difference now.

@stonebear2@hachyderm.io No. Apps on Android are probably 90+% Google code by volume, because of the number of Google-supplied libraries used.

For example (because I have it to hand), the F-Droid app on Android still contains a lot of Google code. If you look at https://github.com/f-droid/fdroidclient/blob/master/gradle/libs.versions.toml and search for:

  • "androidx."
  • "com.google."

you'll see all the Google libraries the F-Droid app uses. This is entirely normal for Android development (the equivalent file for Pachli is https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/blob/main/gradle/libs.versions.toml)

@Aeneas@social.anoxinon.de Hmm, this is two problems.

1. Pachli should not be showing the translation menu option on fedifreu.de because the server can't translate. That's a Pachli bug, I've noted it at https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/issues/2173. Thanks for raising this.

2. The 503 error from anoxinon means the server is rejecting the translation request. That's definitely a problem that @Anoxinon@social.anoxinon.de will need to investigate (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/503)

@Aeneas@social.anoxinon.de @Anoxinon@social.anoxinon.de What error does Pachli report with your social.anoxinon.de account?

https://fedifreu.de (if that's the other server you mean) doesn't support server-side translation. Tusky doesn't support on-device translation, so if you want to use translation on fedifreu.de you'll need to use Pachli's on-device translation support (https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/08/28/2.16.0-release.html#support-on-device-translation-if-installed-from-google-play, only available if Pachli is installed from Google Play).

@Aeneas@social.anoxinon.de That's absolutely fine. As the blog post notes:

> While the library is free to use it is not open source. As some Pachli users may want to avoid proprietary libraries this feature is not present on Pachli installed from F-Droid or GitHub. If this is you then you can skip the rest of this section.

That's why Pachli gives you the choice of where to install from.

To forestall the next question: I was unable to find an open source library with similar functionality that worked reliably.

@mike@thecanadian.social Not sure why you'd consider it "weaponizing". This doesn't change the consent model for collections -- accounts still have to consent to be part of a collection, and can remove themselves at any time. For some people a collection of accounts called "Food bloggers" is people they're going to want to follow. For others -- for whatever reasons -- it will be content they definitely don't to see.
