I still hesitate, but soon it'd be too late... I'm a software engineer closing my second decade of career, with experience in whole lot of backend software, big data/data engineering, devops, dataops, SRE, system administration, whatever other computer problems one might be tasked to solve. And I'm looking for a job that needs any of that. I've been looking for quite some time, without much going on. Remote, USA or West Europe timezone adjacent (or any other if partial overlap works), I'd really love not to touch LLMs. Inexpensive even by EU standards. If you know of a vacancy, or a gig, or have any relevant information, please ping me. If you may, please boost - I'm not well-connected, so it may help. Thanks. #GetFediHired #FediHire

@thedoctor@polymaths.social I did it with k3s (and RKE) in Hetzner in 2 different regions (eg Helsinki and Frankfurt zones), both for the control plane and workers. It works, but for sure it depends on a connectivity and the cluster design: you don't want to have a "split brain" situation happens more than "once in awhile". If you are unsure about your network between home and VPS, maybe do two clusters and operate them say via the Rancher, dedicating workloads accordingly. @homelab@fedigroups.social

@jsstaedtler@mastodon.art @redstrate@mastoart.social The problem is that lots of crawlers do not respect robots.txt (especially those run by "AI" companies). Thus people go for other solutions, to make it too expensive on the side of the crawler, like iocaine - https://firesphere.dev/articles/iocaine-the-deadliest-poison-known-to-ai or anubis - https://anubis.techaro.lol

Iocaine as a tool to prevent AI bots from scraping your website, and feed the bots endless gibberish instead, to poison their data. The name Iocaine is derived from Princess Bride. It is commonly misspelled as Iocane

@fionaorkneynews I'm sorry to point at this, but these 31 deaths are immediate, undeniable even by the USSRs standards of keeping everything secret, accounted victims. I'm not sure how to address it, as the real scale of deaths never had evaluated. There are only estimations, based on observations through decades. One may compare with the Mayak incident, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyshtym_disaster?wprov=sfla1

>>> ppc is still a thing, my project computer is a power9

>> PPC is/was different from POWER. Technically related but they diverged enough that it was a different ISA for all intents and purposes

> To be clear, you're talking about the original POWER ISA. The PowerPC ISA has subsequently been renamed the Power ISA (not to be confused with the POWER ISA). Confusingly, IBM's POWER CPUs (POWER3, POWER4, POWER5, POWER6, POWER7, POWER8, POWER9) since POWER3 implement the Power ISA (then known as the PowerPC ISA), not the POWER ISA. POWER2 was the last CPU to implement the POWER ISA.

IBM, go home, you’re drunk.

@UnePorte Feeling the same... I was made to go through the similar humiliating disability status renewal (with all the medical tests, a visit to a local medical council and then a visit to a regional one in other city, every year, in person) since I was a teen. For a pension of around 200 USD a month at this moment

@nicolas17@social.treehouse.systems It's a bit more complicated than finding another binary. No Python out of the box, not enough permissions in the Termux (or similar) shell sandbox, and so on. Update: I don't see any suid/sgid binary available at all via adb shell access. And no these modules loaded means that this particular family of LPE doesn't work (since you could not load them as well). @federicomena@mstdn.mx @mhoye@cosocial.ca

@bakuninboys Speaking of the UBI and other unconditional payments or covered fees - they are so remarkably cheaper to manage, that at times the removed cost of a controlling structure to do that job compensates the change on its own. And from my own experience: for many years every year I had to prove that my disability from birth wasn't a fake one or didn't disappear by miracle. It's not only a question of (dis)trust to you or the insanity of this whole process, it's also a regular humiliation in front of a medical bureaucracy (that leaves you with a hole in your self-esteem for life).

I was coming back to the next thought a few times, so maybe it's time to write it down:
the dehumanising race to replace people with chatbots and robots (specifically) by the elites really reminds me one particular sci-fi piece - The Robots of Dawn by Asimov.
The people of the planet Aurora there were accustomed to the extreme individualism - everyone was living alone, surrounded only by their robots, able to communicate with other only virtually.

Additionally, in the later novel Foundation and Earth, its protagonists visited another world, Solaria, from the same cohort, where this self-isolation in society transformed into the ultimate form """...where they find that the Solarians, ..., have genetically engineered themselves into self-reproducing hermaphrodites, generally intolerant of human physical presence or contact."""

PS: it's an endorsement to read these novels and chuckle about where the elites instincts lead them.

@jyn I guess it's a taste preference, so no generalisation exists; I liked the root beer soda-like beverage that is available in Thailand (A&W brand). It's an acquired taste, but it's kinda interesting. Also there is Maltin originated in Venezuela, which is more sweet and less "medicinsl" in taste (but I guess it's even less available in Europe).

@karlauerbach@sfba.social I had a bunch of authenticator apps (Authy, Google, MS, Okta) and after I had switched to Bitwarden, I started to move OTPs into it. It's not without its problems, but at least it works on most of the platforms you mentioned. Thus I need only Bitwarden on my devices and one another to provide OTP for Bitwarden login (which also could be installed only on a few "seed" devices).

"Always have been"... sorry to say.

JB from the start back in russia copied the Silicon Valley approach to hire on a basis of your educational "pedigree" - a candidate's university mattered to them more than knowledge, skills and other characteristics. That's a sign of the brainworms at the org level.

I personally ditched IDEA back in 2018, cause even at that time a rudimentary LSP support for editor like vim was better setup than IDE that was importing my project for about an hour (marginal case, but still).

When a persion lacking the context and the historical knowledge tries to write about a multi-century tensions between two nations... this is beyond me. Taking into account this is a person from Taiwan, I expected a bit more of awareness about complexity of politics.

Why would you go into that, not only by siding with a particular view, but also repeating Soviet and russian propaganda?

@kaye@cathode.church From my knowledge in adtech there were and likely there is no truly personalised ad as in "this is shown specifically to you and only you based on your data". In adtech there are two stages - data collection and ad auction. All the data collected about you is still a data point in a dataset in the hands; while the bidders for the fact of showing an ad don't hold this data, they only bid for it to be shown to some audience, not to a particular person, and this match of you into a set from which the ad audience consists is depersonalized for the bidder and probabilistic (not out of a good will, but to decrease computational cost). Technically, it is possible to identify a person based on all data collected about them, but the buying side doesn't know you and don't care about you in particular. Their activities (ad campaigns) work with your profile characteristics.
