Dragon of BSDCafe
mastodon 4.7.3Hello! I'm a software engineer earning money with #java and having fun with #c and #lisp.
Here I'm writing about my main hobbies: #cycling #diyelectronins #dragons #leathercraft #photography #retrocomputing. Also, there are toots about #FreeBSD and #Emacs. Some of my toots will be autodeleted every month.

Subscribed to freebsd-hackers maillist … and looking at the horrors of vibecoded shell-script to automatically perform some kind of etcupdate ![]()
IMO, if you are vibecoding because you are unexpereinced in selected language — why not use the known language and write code with natural intelligence? At least the door to bugs and errors will not be so widely open, because you don't know the selected language and all things around it, and see some plausible looking code, stolen from StackOverflow or GitHub, which is missing some necessary checks for corner cases.
And if you are vibecoding — this is definitely not a hacking ![]()

without prior written approval by core
Dunno, in Russia we call this "generated code is forbidden"🤷♂️. Sounds like the receive of the prior written approval from the core team — will be impossible, bc there will be always 100500 reasons to not give such permission.
You, people in democratic countries, tend to think that if permission could be granted — it will be granted sooner or later
— it is just a matter of formal procedures and rules. But this isn't how things may work ![]()
the only way forward is resistance and complaining
Also consider forking and writing own (possibly simpler) software with natural intelligence in use :drgn:
Remember the history of XFree86:
- it was a widely used display server on the x86 machines
- main dev decided to change the license, without asking the rest of the community
- People became angry and the display server was forked
- XFree86 died and fork became the #1 display server on the x86 :drgn_3c_evil:
@niconiconi@mk.absturztau.be Looks like this is echo from this event

The 1980s also saw a second wave of AI enthusiasm, focused on expert systems. Companies like Inference Corporation, Intellicorp, and Teknowledge promised to capture human expertise in rule-based systems that could make decisions as well as human experts.
[snip]
The second AI winter arrived in the early 1990s. Again, funding collapsed. Again, researchers rebranded their work. Again, the fundamental promise of machines that could program themselves receded into the future.

Shit, I want to end my blogpost about my usage of Dired in Emacs, write another blogpost about cheatsheets for not-every-day-used Emacs keybindings, write simple AF program for plain-text accounting for myself (with a very limited subset of ledger syntax) in a Common Lisp with the help of #ecl and Natural Intelligence (since almost all software for plaintext accounting are proudly slopware nowadays and I can't rely on it and can't trust my accounting to such slopware), countinue drilling case for my NAS, write another blogpost about low-cost selfhosting on Intel Atoms, reverse-engineer PDBs for some default programs on my #Palm PDA (can't find time and muse for it in 4 years
), setup Emacs on Android to use it for everything and avoid use of K9-Mail, ConnectBot and other slopware, and write another blogpost about using Palm in 2022^W2023^W2024^W2025^W2026 — but I didn't sleep well and need to have a good sleep now, FUCK! ![]()

yet we adopted them, not ban them
I should note that "adoption rate" already reversed in some cities, when people found that noise, asphalt everywhere and land-use for six-lane roads and parking lots are not the best way to transofrm city's landscape ![]()
What an unfortunate strawman forced to work on FOSS "or die in poverty" by these nasty bosses you invented.
In my days this was called "an example used in the reasoning" ![]()
a reasonably sized FOSS project
You mean "overbloated monster, providing free ride for corporations"?
it will inevitably become unpaid, unthanked grind
Then it is better to stop at that point.
Coding assists are a godsend.
For people without natural intelligence? Maybe ![]()
@hopeless @mrmasterkeyboard @chikl
"I am deeply troubled that you guys might have more time with your families or sleeping if you use coding assists!"
Sounds like people participating in OpenSource projects not because it is fun or they like programming and solving intellectual puzzles, but because they boss(es) forcing them to do some meaningless work with directly 2 choices: do that or die in poverty ![]()
Maybe it is better for them to not participate in OpenSource at all with such attitude?
@nivex@tenforward.social Damn, who is maintaning systemd-networkd and answering to this maillist — the child from kindergarden? ![]()
it is jaw-dropping to see project members joining in and throwing around threats because they disagree on some bug triaging, and incredibly demotivating.
Exhibit A — kid meets real life and found an existence of non-desktop, non-PC computers, doing some valuable work in workplaces ![]()
@chesheer@mastodon.bsd.cafe Me neither understand this behaviour ![]()
In such cases I always remember this blogpost from Oatmeal about "AI art": https://theoatmeal.com/comics/ai_art
That's how I see AI art. Standing here. Pretending.
Project Anchorage (anti-slop initiative on Codeberg), and many more.)
Sound interesting, can you share a link to it? :drgn_blep:
By which I mean: how it’s potentially destroying family dynamics.
Uhhh, sounds like expected outcome, since assholes behind "AI" fud looks like know about humans interactions as less as possible
and definitely will gain profit from destroying healthy human relationships at all.
because it’s hard to raise kids and disrupt civilization at the same time
Fuck, it's brilliant writing :drgn_excited:
her husband, who founded an AI startup, is convinced they will have a household robot within the decade
At near 2010 (or 2015) I read in one big Russian forum of drivers about autopilot will replace human drivers in next 1-2 years and then the driving with your own hands will become a felony because autopilot is just safer. At near 10-15 years passed and autopilots still unable to follow the road rules and laws
After that it is always funny to read such predictions :-DDD
