Off to a rough start to the week at work, but #ThreeGoodThings have made my evening better… 1) Calibre update seems to have resolved my intermittent remote access issues 2) BookOrbit testing is going well, might move to this from Calibre 3) Daughter got her first college acceptance letter in the mail!! #UMaine

Spent the day on our first college tour with my daughter. The school is great and it is well known as one of the premiere programs in the area for the field she wants to study. The campus is nice and immediately adjacent to the small downtown area. It's a state school so tuition is more palatable.

The school's mascot is a Beaver.

My daughter is a bit naive.

My wife and I decided to have a conversation about a certain euphemism sooner rather than later. That was fun...

@ZenHeathen not reflashing, but there is a growing community of jailbroken Kindle users running KoReader software. Originally developed for Kobo platform, it works to varying degrees on many platforms now. It's quite user moddable, and thanks to the recent influx of Kindle users, seeing a lot of development in terms of plugins and patches lately. Biggest hurdle is exfiltrating all your Amazon content out to Calibre or another self hosted library. @dadbod

@xinit that makes sense...I used Moon+ when I was reading only on my phone. Moved away when I got my first dedicated ereader, and soon after moved to to self hosting my library. Moon+ I think still has the best actual reader UI for a phone app. But I almost never read on my phone anymore. As to the menus, also agree - I have most of the things I use regularly in quick menus. I do tend to constantly tinker with crap though so never truly stay away 😆 @ZenHeathen @dadbod

@xinit you're totally correct on the menu structure. I do have KoReader on my phone as well, but I think it's a bit too much on a phone - I like Readest on the phone better (which can sync reading position with KoReader). The recent SimpleUI plug-in for KoReader is getting a lot of attention for making a user friendly homepage setup, though this doesn't really improve the menus much, yet. @ZenHeathen @dadbod

@realsimon@mastodon.green I read far more ebooks than paper books, so I voted only ebooks. The nearest library with a wide selection (that I have access to) is nearly an hour away. But I can borrow ebooks from that one and 3 others without having to leave the house.

@jesseplusplus been running Android since 2010. Been side loading apps pretty much the whole time. More frequently back in the days when custom ROMs were more widespread, but I still run a few on my current phone (pixel 9 pro). Some via F-Droid, others direct apk installs.

@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social my original intent was to aggregate all my digitized movies into a single machine. Figured some management might be nice. Tried and mostly failed to get Plex running. Had never heard about JellyFin before, but configuration was not too difficult. Now I'm set up with multiple users and my family can watch different things in separate rooms. Can even stream remotely via TailScale (in theory anyway, haven't tried other than a couple tests).

Damn. Was not expecting any of these #3GoodThings today... Saw a post of a local TV host from my childhood - awesome memories of hanging out at my aunt's house watching Scooby Doo as a kid #RangerBob #RochesterNY My daughter was watching a show with a great 90's music soundtrack. Just spent an hour watching my wife's junior prom video that someone she went to high school with posted. I didn't know her then. Cool seeing her friends and not so friends in their natural-ish habitat!

Been using a Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook with 11th gen. Intel i3/8gb RAM upgraded to 512gb ssd since early 2023 as my main computer. It's still running fine and gets the job done, but I'm jealous of My wife's m1 MacBook Air hardware. Had a bunch of 'credit' on Amazon from a work program. Saw a refurb HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook i7 12th gen /32gb/512gb that I could cover with the credit. Ordered it. #WasIStupid? #ImpulseBuy #ChromeBook #Dragonfly

@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social I'm not using Apple TV hardware, but it looks like there are several client options for you. The Android client works well on my Android/roku tv boxes. It seems to handle TV episodes reasonably well. Does have trouble with older things (think 80s TV miniseries), some manual intervention was needed to clean up/clarify metadata. Not sure how it will handle animated shorts or supplemental docs.
