@Meanwhile_on_earth_One@sfba.social Ooh nice. I was with #GoatHillMorris this #MayDay morning #MorrisDancing but didn't take any photos. I'm hoping we see a post later from @berkeleymorris@sfba.social (at least once a year!) but I shouldn't make promises on their behalf. #DeerCreekMorris was also dancing at dawn.

@adapalmer@wandering.shop I tried to find out how it is for aquatic/marine environments, but I'm afraid I don't know what a reliable source on this topic is (for example, https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals-the-ocean/how-to-protect-marine-wildlife would be but they don't cover sunscreens as far as I noticed).

@phreakmonkey@infosec.exchange I believe it is an annual migration. As far as I could tell from https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/california-tortoiseshell.htm anyway. It does also seem to vary from year to year, so I guess both can be true.

@TeaKayB Opticks: or, A Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light" by Isaac Newton (1704). More readable than some of Newton's other works, this is a look at topics like prisms and colors. Especially interesting from the point of view of the history of science, in terms of what was known then and what came only later. There's a Project Gutenberg edition (although I read a paper copy years ago and have no firsthand experience of electronic editions).

@MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz I'm not sure there is anything about error reporting and/or recovery which inherently makes an implementation slow, but for what it is worth I typically use two implementations of the metamath proof verifier. One is fast, and the other gives better error messages (particularly in one commonly encountered situation). As far as I know this is an accident of history and the error messages I'm looking for may eventually get added to the fast verifier. @olynch@mathstodon.xyz

@olynch@mathstodon.xyz @MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz I do, but I'm not sure how relevant it is to your interest in parsing. The verifier I'm calling the slow one is https://github.com/metamath/metamath-exe and the one I'm calling the fast one is https://github.com/metamath/metamath-knife . The number one reason for the difference in speed, as I understand it, is that metamath-exe is single threaded (having been written before typical users had more than one processor) and metamath-knife is multi threaded.

For those not, familiar, this is a crime boss who came somewhat close to being elected to the Irish parliament in 2024 in the Dublin Central constituency. Not sure exactly how many lessons to draw about electoral systems, but you'd think he'd have a tougher time under a different system.

@olynch@mathstodon.xyz @MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz The error handling which is different is that if I take any theorem and remove the distinct variable constraint ($d), metamath-knife says 'Disjoint variable constraint violated' and no further details. metamath-exe gives 'Variables "A" and "f" do not have a disjoint variable requirement in the assertion being proved' (and likewise for every pair of variables missing the constraint).

@ddrake@mathstodon.xyz Rail there seems like a good idea. I don't know so much about the politics or how the expenditures/construction would be phased, so it might be hard to make it happen, but that doesn't mean not to try. The article does a good job of discussing the different styles of rail and why something faster than light rail on the I-94 corridor would be helpful.

@ombialik A lot of the others are more in the vein of "can you informalize this agda proof so I can understand it?" That's beyond the scope of a mere question. Another question I've sometimes asked is "what are the prerequisites to understanding this? What would I study?" I'm not sure I'm wrong to be quicker to post here or on math overflow or something, rather than writing an author directly.

@olynch@mathstodon.xyz @MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz I realize that I might have made it sound like I was talking about parse errors. But as far as I've noticed both of these two verifiers lose their minds in roughly similar ways if I do something like omit a "$}" (the ${ and $} syntaxes form nested pairs and so making them unbalanced is similar to unbalanced pairs in a lot of syntaxes - the scopes get all mixed up and so on).
