A quick story about Silas. A few years ago there was pair of boys that went on a killing spree across western Canada. They took to the bush around Gilliam and were said to be heading to Churchill. Concerned I contacted him and asked if he was worried. He confidently replied "No, they're dead. That land is too hard even in the summer" A few days later they found them dead by a river. He knew that land better than most.

It seems with climate change rolling forward faster than expected it might not be prudent to anger the people that maintain your lifeboat. Canadians might at some point become far less welcoming after being abused and insulted repeatedly. #ElbowsUp

Looks like Rogers is increasing their yearly hockey tax to $344.99/year. Plus I have to pay TSN for world juniors. That's on top of the other streaming bills. Cable cutting has become the bait and switch we all feared it would be. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/rogers-jacking-up-price-sportsnet-again

Tech Bros: Our LLMs are so good that they're dangerous and world changing. Buy our series A.

Responsible Govt: Great glad you've admitted that now either accept intense regulation or face nationalization.

Tech bros: Wait whaaattt...

Of course my fantasy requires responsible government but I find it odd that tech bros are using catstrophisation as a sales tool.

If Jason Kenney can come out in defense of Canada in Alberta why can't Pierre Poilievre? Why can't the national conservative party as a whole? I suspect it's because they're aligned with the separatists in the back rooms and that is soft treason.

My dad ran a few businesses in the 70's and early 80's. I Always wonder what must've it been like to go home and not have anyone be able to get in touch with you. To actually disconnect for a few hours.

@MatRopert@mastodon.social It feels a lot like they're using a screw driver to hammer in a nail. Mandating a specific model without testing it's veracity against your use case, ie game dev on a model not trained in game development seems like a management fail. Also deploying a tool without training on how to prompt and organize agents also seems like another failure. This quote also is suspect: "models seem to get a new release every year or less". We're seeing an almost bi-weekly pace to model releases.

@tchambers@indieweb.social We've recently discovered AI tools in our business and honestly it's like obtaining a super power. However I can't help but think what that super power could do in the hands of bad actors. Guard rails don't seem to be enough as in this AI arms race new more powerful models seem to be released on an almost weekly basis.

2/ Most people that come from other social media are very, very guarded about whom they follow and with good reason. Convincing them to simply go on a following spree is like telling an abuse victim to trust people again. We need to find a way to make the on boarding process something less than a clean sheet process and but not as invasive as a Twitter algorithm. A smarter algorithm might actually be a solution.

🇨🇦 Sovereign wealth fund explainer from CBC. I'm thinking Carney is hoping this is going to be a war bonds style vehicle to funnel money into domestic projects. I'm not entirely sold but it is novel. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-sovereign-wealth-fund-explainer-9.7179217?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=owned&utm_campaign=dm_cbc043026&utm_content=news&cmp=newsletter_CBC%20Newsletter_17094_2152087

Canada is getting a sovereign wealth fund. What are they and how might this one work? | CBC News

Sovereign wealth funds are usually started with extra money that governments then use to invest. But the Canada Strong Fund will differ from wealth funds in some other countries, and there are plenty of details that still need to be sorted out.

@virtuous_sloth@cosocial.ca @devsimsek@universeodon.com Another European company working on photonic computing. One of the partners at the end says something to the effect that if they're successful there will be no need for cloud AI as you could simply run models locally. He should be careful with those kinds of statements when most of the US economy right now is a bet on cloud AI. However I'm becoming more convinced that if they can get it right that this is the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tqOPS6x9l8&t=3s

@MatRopert@mastodon.social The big announcements have recently been occurring almost monthly. Although when your closer to it the definition of a "big" announcement might be different. We've also had a flurry of activity within the last six months. Most people I know use a synthesized approach and use up to four or five models simultaneously for different things, so using claude exclusively and saying its meh rings a little hollow.
