Working on a mastodon python script using mastodon.py today. It's going to emulate what I think channel.org was doing - for each followed account, check every 10 minutes or so and boost any public posts. Also excluding replies and unlisted posts. I'll also re-evaluate the account's discovery settings and look for common nobot, etc. tags in pinned posts and profile bios before boosting (at least once per run anyway). #MastoDev

📬 Trunk & Tidbits for June 2026 is now live! Our monthly blog post series is there to showcase what we worked on last month. In this edition, we are also discussing our official Helm Chart for Mastodon, for those of you who deploy Mastodon on Kubernetes. We released a brand new version of the chart in a new place, deprecating the existing one. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/07/trunk-tidbits-june-2026/ #mastodev #mastoadmin #TrunkAndTidbits

We need reply controls in mainline masto like yesterday. Of course technically its always possible for people on a malicious instance to evade them, but that is not a counterargument to having them work on the overwhelming majority of well behaved instances where the people we actually talk to are. We already have the mechanism in mainline masto: reply collection enumeration - if person on instance A receives a malicious reply from person on instance B that is propagated to instance C, when instance C displays the thread, it refreshes the replies collection, sees a tombstone for the malicious reply, and does not display it in the thread. We already have notification filters and a whole ui built for that. Reply controls could just be another tab on the same menu with the same controls. You can't stop people from posting whatever, but you should be able to control whether someone uses your posts as a platform to harass you and the people around you. #mastodev #fedimeta

🟧 also, honourable mention to @andypiper@macaw.social, who helped start this entire thing! there wouldn't be an anniversary to celebrate without you remember: the word "fuck" is such a powerful COC violation that it is capable of overpowering even a project that gives a "Frick" about accessibility. in case you're looking to write about the topic, you can use a title like this: "Mastodon accessibility concerns disrupted by powerful fuck" or "powerful fuck leads to 3-month anniversary of 6-character Mastodon accessibility change" even in the face of evidence-based accessibility changes, things can still be halted by a single fuck that was given! thanks to @MastodonEngineering@mastodon.social for curating such a great team! https://txt.ltdk.xyz/giving-a-fuck-about-accessibility/ #Mastodon #MastoDev #JohnMastodon #PowerfulFuck

I see why people may want to auto purge posts on Mastodon but that is unfair to people who reply or quote post, which leaves orphan replies and interactions with no context. It also leaves database entries and media that may come with interactions on servers. I think one option to be fair would be to create a post setting that marks a post with an icon or something warning people that it is subject to auto purging, giving people advance notice who then can decide to interact or not Post not made with the auto purge option can still be deleted but must be deleted manually. It would be great if manually deleted posts had a user panel that users could see and then manage their orphaned interactions. #MastoAdmin #Moderation #Mastodon #MastoDev
