One of the many things I hate about Elon Musk is the fact that if I had been handed as much wealth and privilege as he has at a certain time during my mental and emotional development, I might very well have turned out like him. I mean, look back at your past, imagine the cringiest version of yourself you can remember. Then imagine never having any reason to grow beyond that. So this is to say, I really, *really* hate that we've organized our society in such a way that it's possible for a person to amass a development arresting amount of wealth and privilege. Anyone who claims to be against Musk, but supports the status quo that made someone like him not just possible, but inevitable, is fundamentally dishonest and has no place in helping decide how we move forward from here.

@Remittancegirl By this point, Israel has dropped more than double the tonnage of bombs on Gaza than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atrocities *combined.* The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was 15 kt and the one dropped on Nagasaki was 21 kt. Even as of October 2025, it was estimated that over 72 kt worth of bombs had been dropped on Gaza - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_bombing_of_the_Gaza_Strip

@valpackett@social.treehouse.systems @soph@grrl.me Yeah, the wild thing about Ed Zitron's reporting is that he's usually doing his math from either best-case or at the very least, very generous terms. He's typically pointing out that when you look at the actual numbers, the financials are literally *impossible* even when you give AI companies every benefit of the doubt. If 8-9x is assuming the people running things are otherwise competent, outside of making an obviously disastrous investment, then 40-150x feels about right when you account for the people who actually run these companies.

They only exist in the memories of the people who were there. In my experience, there are maybe a small handful that I think anyone reliably remembers and, even then, the edges of those memories have been softened with time. Now, those moments exist everywhere, forever, on-demand, and in HD, whether you consent or not.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai @MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social Jimmy Stewart was a bomber pilot and instead of using his fame to get sent on cushy milk runs, he actually flew serious combat missions. That's particularly notable because bomber crews had outrageous casualty rates - it was just about the most dangerous jobs you could do. Stewart flew over *20* goddamn missions. And, on the flip side, John Wayne did everything he possibly could to avoid fighting in WWII because he was a fucking coward.

@xssfox@cloudisland.nz There was some weird non-complete contract going around the office at a previous job. I looked it over and didn't see absolutely anything in it that would benefit me, so I didn't sign it. I got called into a meeting with legal and they were like, "Look, everyone is signing this, even the CEO signed it." I said, "This looks completely one-sided. Unless my job is on the line, why on earth would I do that?" Fucking wild that that's all it would take for some people to give up rights for nothing in return.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @fabio@manganiello.eu What you're talking about has been disproven by history time and time again. Social consequences are a huge part of how we suck less. Making certain beliefs socially unacceptable is how we curtail their influence, not acting is if they're simply a difference of opinion. And yeah, I have intolerant family members. For instance, my dad is a Holocaust denier. We don't talk.

@jeantranscene@mastodon.social @loriemerson@post.lurk.org Right. If they could, they would try to force more output out of Jewish people by making them work on the Sabbath, for example. And having a completely non-negotiable day off is a much more clear cut impact to what a company can get away with than the nebulous productivity gains that AI companies purport. *If* AI improves their bottom line (and that's becoming a shakier proposition as the cost of the service moves towards what it costs to run), sure, it'll stay. They still can't force an individual to use it if it clearly violates their religious tenets. They also can't count that against them any more than they can penalize a Muslim employee for not being as productive because they're fasting during Ramadan. They have to provide reasonable accommodations or else they open themselves up to massive lawsuits. Talk about being bad for their bottom line.
