My Deaf therapist just shared with me that in the Deaf cultural studies crowd, they joke that "hard of hearing" is actually "soft of deaf" and I love that! 🙌 🤟

Went to Trader Joe's in DC today. Parked in a handicapped spot, got out with my cane, found the elevator broken — stairs only.
Talked to store manager. No repair date. No alternative access plan. But I did get a "disabled customers are a priority."
The ADA passed in 1990. Thirty-six years later and "have you tried the stairs?" is still a thing. 😤

Attended an open house for a Jewish friend's mom last night. For all sorts of really complicated family dynamics, he's not attending the funeral, so this was his way of saying goodbye.
It was such a lovely evening - all of his close friends were there, a rabbi friend of the family was there to say the Kaddish prayer.
Watching my friend, standing with his wife, his four year old in his arms, surrounded by 40 of his closest friends, I thought, "THIS is family." ❤️

Yesterday I had only just learned about the genre - today I've added 10 books to my tbr list (thank you???) and am on chapter 5 of John Scalzi's Kaiju Preservation Society and loving it.
Resting today after a really wonderful outing yesterday to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival!
Unfortunately I got zero pics of the 4 year old nephew, who, viewing live sheep for the first time, pet their heads and noses, waved and yelled hello, and then with his arms up, yelled "I love you sheep!"
No major purchases, but did get to talk to the maker of my e-spinner and found out how to get it up and running again, so I'm pretty chuffed about that!

Countdown to my back surgery on May 29! I put off scheduling the surgery for several weeks - out loud I was all like "I need to find the best time for my clients and my work" but inwardly I was just freaking out and putting it off.
Surgery will mean going off lupus meds for 3 weeks and that is something that I'm really not looking forward to, but now that surgery is actually scheduled, I'm actually excited to get it done!
It's a fun culinary weekend! Last night, we made Syracuse salt potatoes with our cod and veggies, this morning we had fresh blackberry syrup made last night in the Zojirushi bread maker, and tonight it will be a Lebanese cucumber salad with yogurt, garlic, and mint, and for dessert, fresh peaches over vanilla ice cream.
Potatoes, black berries, peaches, and cucumbers are all thanks to the Saturday morning farmer's market!

@freakonometrics@mastodon.social This is really beautiful. I grew up with a dad who was home two weeks then gone for work for two weeks, then home again. On the day that he flew home, he'd come and pick me up at school, and we'd hold hands and catch up on our two weeks while we walked to the car.
In 5th grade, a school mate saw us and teased me: "I saw you holding your dad's hand yesterday! You're a baby!" I responded "Oh! Doesn't your dad hold your hand? I'm so sorry for you!" 😂
