Writer & bookworm. Vegan, non-binary / genderfluid, neurospicy / autistic. Haunted by untold stories.

From Denmark but write mostly in English. I love books & writing, especially fantasy & SciFi. Currently working on a series of contemporary fantasy novels inspired by the folklore of Languedoc & Provence, which I hope to one day publish.

I also enjoy linguistics & languages, slowly teaching myself French, Occitan, Spanish & Persian.

@minego@pdx.social The most disturbing thing to me is that, if we were to genuinely believe that these models were conscious individuals, then using them would be slavery and exploitation. Thankfully they're not conscious, of course, but the fact that so many people blithely use these models while pretending they are (or soon will be) conscious is still incredibly disturbing and says something about us.

@forse@kolektiva.social @minego@pdx.social That too. But I think there's a difference between realizing that the system and the rich and powerful are exploiting everyone and everything, and realizing that lots of ordinary people are apparently just fine with having their own personal slave. I mean, it's not surprising, as nothing is these days, but it's disturbing.

#WritersCoffeeClub 8. What's the last thing you read which motivated you to write? The book I'm currently reading: tome 3 of the early diary of Anaïs Nin (1923-27). This is the point where she starts trying to write novels and plays herself, and it's both relatable, inspiring, and humbling at the same time. Relatable because of her doubts about her own writing, and inspiring/humbling because she wrote so much or so well.

RE: https://eldritch.cafe/@lynatic/116439531277946968 @CiaraNi It is apparently watermarked by the AI that generated it (though I haven't checked this myself). I'd consider that pretty strong proof, since I can't imagine why anyone would add an AI watermark to a real, non-AI picture (but then again, people do lots of things I can't imagine people doing) https://mstdn.social/@lynatic@eldritch.cafe/116439531501647616

Happy Easter 🐣

Made a vegan lemon cake to celebrate. Not quite enough glaze to cover all of it but otherwise delicious 😋

#WritersCoffeeClub 13 Mar: Talk about an experience when you consulted an expert for a piece of writing.

Finding experts is an eternal challenge as someone with practically zero connections.

I did manage to find a medical doctor through a friend who was willing to answer a bunch of my weird medical questions for book 1, but while her answers were indeed very helpful, she wasn't a specialist in the exact medical subfields my questions were about so she could only help so much with some of them.

#ScribesAndMakers 12 Mar: Our featured creator has an em dash key on his keyboard. Do you do any customizations for your creativity?

I've set up the Pause key (which isn't used for anything else anyway) to be a Compose key, which means I can create all sorts of characters with it. Em dash is Pause and then three regular dashes. Ellipsis is Pause and then two dots. I can usually guess other sequences because they tend to be fairly logical, for example ♥ is Pause, <, 3 and ™ is Pause, t, m.

@fgraver @CiaraNi I couldn't tell if it was real or not at first either. I thought it looked too perfect to be true, but I really wasn't sure. I had to read the comments to convince myself it was AI, and it makes me so sad that we can't just enjoy pretty/funny pictures of cute birbs anymore.

Hey all y'all penguins out there, I'm looking for a #Linux distro so give me ALL your recs!

* It MUST be able to install and use without an internet connection, and it would be very nice if this was actually easy and doesn't require some arcane wizardry.
* It MUST have KDE Plasma.
* It would be very nice if it had a strict no-AI contributions policy and excludes known vide-coded software, but I recognize that's getting increasingly hopeless. Still. Would be nice.

#WritersCoffeeClub 7 Apr: Do you combine poetic fragments and prose paragraphs in your work?

Absolutely! In my WIP it's mostly in the form of spells, since I feel like spoken magic ought to be at least a little poetic. Just shouting "I cast fireball!" or "Flamius Ballius!" may be fine in a D&D game (or certain wizard books who shall not be named), but I like to get a bit more creative.

My characters occasionally sing, too, and Leila even recites Persian poetry at one point, because she can.

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green I'm in my 40s so didn't grow up with smartphones, but I still recognize this crippling fear of putting yourself out there or doing anything that might get you attention or ridicule. I guess smartphones and algorithmic social media took a kind of bullying that always existed and made it far more virulent.

@yacc143 @CiaraNi Alas, just because something is no longer free doesn't mean people won't use it, especially people with more money than good sense/scruples. Or that the technology itself just goes away. And all the slop that's already been generated will continue floating around, getting into everything like digital micro plastic and forever chemicals. Even if the bubble pops tomorrow, we haven't seen the end of this. Not even close.

#WordWeavers 1 Apr: Your opinion on April Fool's Day & do you incorporate the day into your work?

I find the kind of joking and teasing that this day promotes exhausting if not outright malicious, so I try to act as if the tradition doesn't exist and just enjoy a lovely spring day.

@futurebird@sauropods.win You're telling me I could spend a week being a sneaky fairy sneaking into places and causing havoc with none the wiser? Sign me up! Yes, if you were a giant you could smash lots of stuff, but it would also be super obvious who did it and you'd get in a lot of trouble afterwards.

@pockets My rule is simple: if it's something the *majority* of people don't want to see without a warning (erotic or violent content, spoilers), it gets a CW. For anything else, CWs is the wrong tool. Instead I try to make sure I include relevant keywords/hashtags so that people can filter out posts and apply CWs themselves, because no one knows what you want to see/not see better than you do.

#WritersCoffeeClub Sep 3: Is there one piece of well-known writing advice you ignore?

"Write what you know."

If I could only write what I know, I'd be bored to tears, and the reader would be too.

I like to say that I strive to "know what I write" instead. Writing for me is about exploring worlds, lives, and experiences that are different from my own, and that I may not know much about when I start. But hopefully I know a lot more about them when I'm done writing.

@chris_colvin The only one I still use regularly is YouTube. Occasionally I use Maps but only if I need Streetview. I'd love to get rid of both and be able to say that I'm completely Google free, but alas, the alternatives just don't have the content.

#WordWeavers 7 Apr: Look around and describe an object as if it were a mysterious item.

Before you stands what looks like a small obelisk, brightly painted with geometric patterns of a clearly mystical nature. However, the pyramidal top is unusually narrow, to an extreme degree, in fact can't really be described as pyramidal at all, and white like the tip of an iceberg, which it also does not resemble. On further inspection this monolith is not made of stone but a softer, smoother material.

RE: @davidho@mastodon.world

And we could feed the whole world, and more, with the current state of science. The fact that we're not currently feeding the whole world is not because we can't, or don't know how, or because science has failed us. It's too many vested interests, perverse incentives, egoism, greed and ingrown habits that keep us from feeding the world.
