The #UK government is run by bad parents who think that curfews and dumb rules can make up for their absolute inability to understand and follow their children. And those bad parents feel entitled to turn their awful parenting habits into law and impose them on millions of children who have better parents and are actually doing just fine. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c982857nlrlo

Security, terrorism and migration are the magic words used by the reactionary political right all around the world. You keep repeating them like a mantra, and they can justify everything. Forced repatriations, extra-judicial arrests, suspensions of international treaties, of the rule of law, of freedom of movement, of freedom of speech. Fascists don’t even have to mention exactly why such extreme measures are required. A fascist can just say that it’s for “security reasons”, and to defend the country from “terroristic threats” that stem from immigration, and they have carte blanche to dismantle democratic institutions however they please. Until the emergency becomes the norm. Until the police state replaces whatever is left of democratic institutions. And I blame the political left too for this. Fascists can go so far only because they are not afraid of the consequences. Because nobody calls them accountable. Because they never have a reason to be afraid for their lives, even though they impose those fears on many. A shy and insipid political left has embraced nonviolence even against the worst fascist scum. The political left that has forgotten that their grandparents defeated fascism by picking up the rifles and getting their hands dirty with political assassinations. The political left has alienated its own base because it can no longer channel their outrage against the bullying and contradictions of fascisms. The political left believes that they can defeat those who don’t believe in the democratic discourse by using the tools of the democratic discourse rather than violence.

One day someone should explain why #Macklemore shouldn’t appear on American stages while Ye can. Why saying “Free #Palestine” from a stage is antisemitic, but saying “Heil Hitler” is ok.

There is something deeply concerning in the ways #America is trying to export its uniquely aggressive and dumb brand of #fascism to #Europe. The American fascists have already been nudged a few times to stay outside of European politics. They were reminded in September by the EU Council president Antonio Costa, when a US Security strategy paper called for Europe to “correct” its trajectory, curb migration and listen to its private strategists when it comes to political decisions - yet stating that it’s Europe, not America, the one facing a democratic crisis. They were reminded again in December by Von der Leyen, when Trump called European politicians “decaying” and “weak”. They were reminded again the same month by Costa, when America threatened to leverage European populist parties to build a resistance against Brussels, guilty of being too hard on American tech oligarchs. They were reminded again in February by the president of the EU Parliament when Trump openly supported Orbán in the latest Hungarian elections and pledged to explicitly support hard right candidates in all European elections. And yet again, Musk recently stated that Le Pen is France’s last remaining hope. Now, with the German elections on the horizon, the US State Department has issued a $5M funding scheme to “strengthen and develop democratic resilience, rule of law, freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and the defense of human rights in Europe”. Note the Orwellian doublethink. The American fascists claim to defend “free speech”, but in fact they only defend the speech of a few other fascists like them (Le Pen, Orbán, Wilders, AfD) while ignoring their countless examples of crackdown on free speech, and while their definition of “crackdown against free speech” is actuall “crackdown against fascist hate speech”. The Americans’ idea of “freedom of religion” includes only Christianity - and only an extremely watered down, doctrinally blasphemous, ideologically incoherent and sociopathically divisive version of it, so much that that human abomination that goes under the name of JD Vance has publicly scolded the Pope about theology too. Freedom of religion for, say, Muslims, is of course completely out of the scope. Same goes for “defending human rights”. That comes from a country where ICE has been given a free waiver to shoot on whoever they don’t like and kidnap people from the streets, and from a country that mocks international law when it comes to the rights of refugees and migrants. About “defending the rule of law”, that comes from the same country trying to dismantle the International Criminal Court because sometimes its decisions are not aligned with America’s selfish interests, and who is trying to replace the UN with a private club with subscription costs, a club where he the only owner and shareholder. About “defending the freedom of the press”, that comes from a country that is actively shrinking freedom of press at home, that is issuing subpoenas to NYT reporters doing their job in order to silence them and intimidate them, and whose president is actively trying to dismantle every single aspect of the American culture (media, universities, law firms, libraries, schools, federal agencies) unless they agree with him. About “defending democracy”, the American interference is basically never aligned with the will of the Europeans, and it’s always aligned instead with the interests of its late-capitalist plutocratic scumbags. When Trump talks about “shared Western civilizational heritage”, Voltaire, Rousseau, Locke and Kant are literally dying in their own graves for the second time. Since Hitler died, there’s not been a single Western head of State that has pissed and disrespected the Western civilizational heritage more than Trump. How are we as European supposed to react to these aggressions? The answer is simple: isolate, condemn, retaliate, deriskify, cut ties. Americans are no longer allies nor friends, and perhaps they’ve never been. They are our enemies, our foes and our rivals, and we must start treating their failures as our successes. American think tanks in Europe must be disbanded. American lobbying in Brussels and in European capitals must be outlawed. American propaganda channels and podcasts must be treated the same way we treat Russia Today. American embassies must be shut down, or at least threatened to be shut down. Trade treaties must be scraped, just like Trump scrapes commercial agreements with Europe depending on his mood swings. And not a single piece of critical European IT infrastruture must be run by an American businesses. Enough with complacency. Hundreds of billions of euros must go right now towards building a competitive infrastructure, and they must go now. American is a full Nazi regime and its biggest asset has become the export of its toxic Nazi ideology. We have a civic duty of fully insulating from them and treating them as the enemies that they have become. https://www.politico.eu/article/friedrich-merz-maga-stay-out-europe-elections/

It’s ok #Google, I don’t care if you remove my two browser extensions (Platypush and RSS Viewer) from the Chrome Store. I still won’t migrate them to that technical horror named Manifest V3 that you wanted so badly. There are two reasons: Manifest V3 is your own creature. Web extensions were doing just fine with Manifest V2. You wanted Manifest V3 only because you hate ad-blockers. And you lied for a long time saying that it was, as usual, for “increased user security”. So I won’t give you a victory by migrating my extensions to Manifest V3, because I hate everything that Manifest V3 represents. The Platypush extension needs the ability to intercept and mangle HTTP requests through its custom JavaScript API. The RSS Viewer extension needs the ability to intercept HTTP responses to detect the countless ways that an RSS/Atom feed can be provided, and render it accordingly by swapping content-type and creating a new DOM on the fly. Both these abilities have been lost in Manifest V3 - and that’s just because you, Google, hated ad-blockers, and you didn’t care of destroying many legitimate use-cases from extensions that had been around for years. As of now, since apparently also Brave gave up on supporting Manifest V2, the only supported way to install and use the Platypush and RSS Viewer extensions is through Firefox or any of its forks. If there’s any Chromium-based browser out there that still supports Manifest V2 properly please let me know - but at the current state the extensions would still require a manual install because they have been removed from the Chrome Store.

“Of course it’s a #genocide. We would shoot at anyone, children and women too”. “Even if they didn’t pose any danger?” “Of course, none of them had any weapons! I think I saw an armed Palestinian only once, but we used to kill hundreds of them every day” “We were fine. We were happy. It was fun. It was like a videogame” “What do you mean? Killing was fun? Including children? Even if they weren’t armed? Whole families?” “There was a psychologist. We could talk to him if we needed. But we didn’t need it because we were fine” “Mine is an elite unity. We would identify the buildings to blow up while families were still in. We destroyed whole neighbourhoods. We destroyed the whole north of the Gaza strip because there should have been no houses to get back to. We set on fire memories, pictures, books, everything. We would fill up houses with gas and set them on fire, or we would gather all the pillows in the middle of the living room and set them on fire. Wool burns very well. In a minute the whole apartment was on fire. Mine was a unit made of left-wing youngsters. From Tel Aviv’s higher classes. We don’t hate the Arabs. We did it because it had to be done”. “The settlers, the crazy ones, those who believe in a crooked God and do strange things like not bathing or reproduce like rabbits: those perhaps hate the Arabs. But we progressive left-wing youngsters aren’t like that: we only did what we were told to do and then we’d smoke a cigarette or come back to have an aperitif together” “I asked my supervisor: ‘What do you think of what we’re doing here?’ He told me: ‘It’s right. You must just trust the system’” “We only do what the Israeli society tells us to do. If they tell us that Gaza must be wiped out, then we must wipe it out” “I went to Poland to visit concentration camps. I keep believing that Nazis were Nazis. But I don’t know what I am” Interviews to Israeli soldiers published in the NAZA documentary

@mina@berlin.social @Pyrogenesis@mefi.social @aral@mastodon.ar.al about the “campaigns and profiles seem to be too curated to be amateur” point: if your survival depends on something, rest assured that that “something” will soon become your profession and you’ll try to maximize returns out of it. It’s not a secret that in some cases campaigns in Gaza have become a “family business” and that some accounts even do some basic A/B testing to check what works. And it’s not even a secret that families that have been successful in this have actually managed to raise a lot. Talking of thousands of dollars per week in some cases. Which leads to a vicious cycle - those families eventually keep engaging in the patterns that seem more profitable, and other families who check what the “wealthiest” campaigns do also end up copying the same patterns - which lately often include even AI enhancement of pictures. Btw, families who raise such huge sums are also frowned upon in Gaza. I’ve heard other Palestinians going as far as calling them “thieves” and “the new uneducated rich”. And my advice is always to donate to those who raise the least instead.

The most greedy, corrupt and sociopath man to ever rule a Western country is charging a $100k/month subscription for faster access to his posts on his own private social media. And, for some reason, nobody is outraged and nobody is showing up in front of the White House with a guillotine. I don’t know why publicly calling for the assassination of a head of State is such a taboo, even when everyone is aware that the world will be a much better place once that person is dead. #USPol https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/trump-media-pitched-100000-monthly-fee-fast-feed-us-presidents-posts-ft-reports-2026-07-17/

If someone is so offended by it that it treats it as a piece of terrorist propaganda, then it’s the individual who finds such statement offensive the one that should be removed - not only from a flight, but from civilized society as a whole. This is the level of normalization of genocide the West has reached because of decades of aggressive Zionazi propaganda. The creed and ideological dogmas of #Zionism have become indistinguishable from those of fascism. Zionist hate no longer targets only Muslims or obvious antisemitic targets, but also Jews themselves blamed of not being “Jewish enough” to support an uncompromisingly supportive stance towards the genocidal Zionist entity. The trend of labelling liberal or left-wing Jewish as “not real Jews” is an act of pure fascist ideological hate - socialists in Italy were also described as “unpatriotic Italians” during Mussolini’s regime. Holocaust trauma is also doubted when Holocaust survivors don’t openly support violence against Palestinians. If you were looking for Holocaust denial, look no further than the Zionist camp. Zionists and fascists also started leveraging the exact same anti-Muslim rhetoric, describing Muslims as backwards rapists who come to the West to get white women pregnant. They also share the same disdain as fascists towards any act of humanity towards anyone who doesn’t look, think and talk like them, calling it “suicidal empathy”. Just like fascists, Zionists also started employing the same “great replacement” narrative, and started claiming that the only alternative to their abhorrent ideology is the destruction of the nation-state, the destruction of strong borders, of private property, gender boundaries and individual liberties. Always remember that when an abhorrent ideology frames everything as a choice between them and the destruction of everything you know, you are witnessing fascism unfold in front of your eyes. You are being forced to swallow something awful because the alternative would be even more awful. The whole democratic process goes out of the window, and you’re only given a choice between societal collapse and patriotic saviours of the nation-state. Next time a Zionist tells you that #Israel must exist exactly in that corner of the world as a bulwark of Western democracy, remind them that the Zionist movement has turned into the exact antithesis of everything that Western liberal democratic values were supposed to mean - and that nobody ever asked for a corner of Western democracy outside of the West, because our model of democracy is not supposed to be a good to be exported through violence, apartheid, genocide and displacement. Remind them that they talk like fascists, walk like fascists and hang out with fascists, and many of us raised with the values of antifascist resistence instinctively pick up the rifles as soon as we see a fascist in front of us. If Israel wants to become an illiberal fascist regime in that corner of the world, we’ll keep stating loudly that it has no right to exist. https://mondoweiss.net/2026/07/inside-the-world-symposium-against-anti-zionism-where-contempt-for-muslims-and-leftist-jews-took-center-stage/

Caused by a newly introduced bug on Chuffed which sends the wrong HTTP code for rate limited queries. I have pushed a workaround on the Gaza archive here. You know what’s the dumbest thing about Adam Howard a.k.a. LinuxIsBest or any of the dozens of accounts he created? His insistence that he’s actually providing useful added value to the community. He complained about all the requests to take down his list of GazaVerified accounts because “it’s censorship!” His “people must know!” anti-censorship approach went as far as mirroring his infamous “Gaza Verified scam acccounts” list also to torrents and Limewire, as if it was the unredacted Epstein files. Except that…you know how to retrieve the full liste of #GazaVerified accounts, always up-to-date? curl -s 'https://gaza.onl/api/v1/accounts' | jq -r '.[].fqn' 🤯 We have talked over video calls with trusted mediators with people in Gaza. With some of them we’ve had several calls with different people from the team. We have checked that their IP addresses (used to register to gaza-verified, on their instance, or to access the archive or other websites we manage) belong indeed to residential or mobile subnets in Gaza. Some of the verification video calls have also been published on Vimeo, and at least in one case the team also managed to evacuate a girl in Gaza, who is now in Milan. In some cases we’ve seen their IDs (when it was a functional requirement) and talked to other family members too. But sure, go trust an anonymous guy instead. A loser who initially had doubts about us, and when presented with more evidence, instead of acknowledging his mistakes and apologizing like others did, he just decided to double down on his dumb accusations. Someone who has so much spare time at hand that apparently they create a new account on a new instance every day just to say that we’re a scam. Someone who, by their own admissions, works or worked at Meta (although I’m not aware of any Adam Howard who has ever worked there), but who feels like a simple list of accounts that can be retrieved with a simple call to an open API endpoint is such valuable infomration that it should be replicated on Codeberg, torrents and Limewire. I’ve met many losers and idiots in my life, but very few ever managed to condense within the same person so much imbecility, stubborness, incompetence, lack of empathy, first-world privilege, and an uncomfortable will to fight for a lost cause for so long and through so many means that highlights a genuine lack of any other purpose in life. People have decided to disappear from the Internet for public humiliations order of magnitude smaller than those that LinuxIsBest has (rightfully) endured. I don’t know why such an idiot is still on the Internet. The answer, perhaps, is because he’s a true unprecedented idiot. p.s. I won’t join the choir of those who demand his Codeberg repo to be taken down. After all, the CSV file he uploaded there is just an (incomplete) version of what anyone can pull from the Gaza archive API. There’s nothing compromising in there, the list of our friends in Gaza is already public. And everyone with a functioning brain who has read at least a couple of his phrases can easily conclude that he’s an idiot. But I definitely join the choir of those who call for this pathetic human being to just disappear from the Internet for a while, after collecting so much well-desereved hate and being publicly named and shamed. The biggest issue with the current trend towards tech mass surveillance is that it doesn’t necessarily have to be codified into law for it to be effective. Even if the UK doesn’t manage to pass a law that bans VPNs, even if the EU puts stringent regulation around user data collection, mass surveillance can still de facto be implemented above the law. Sure, VPNs may not be illegal. But what if my website has a daily updated database of known VPN servers offered by the major providers (it’s just a few thousands of servers, after all), and I prevent you from accessing it unless you turn off your VPN or Tor? And what if many websites start sharing that approach? And what if connections from IPs on those lists started being classified in Cloudflare’s highest risk category, so you have to solve 5 CAPTCHAs to find cars and bikes before you can access the content? Sure, the law may not require you to have a genuine Android or iOS device in order to verify your identity. But what if, when you access a website, Cloudflare puts under your nose a CAPTCHA with a QR code to be scanned from your mobile device, creating a link between you as a person and your visit to that website? Sure, the EU may impose heavy fines over Google for its abuse of dominant position and unrestricted access to people’s information. But what’s the point when most of the apps start anyway using the new Google Integrity API to verify user access, and when the EU itself considers using that API for identity verification on its side? The tech industry has reached such a level of power concentration that laws don’t matter anymore. All it takes is Cloudflare to add a new challenge to their CAPTCHA, or Google to add a new control to their Integrity APIs, and thousands if not millions of websites and apps become suddenly inaccessible to those who want privacy. Those tech companies and the decisions they take during their closed-doors meetings have become the law.

In other news: “Cleaning up Leonardo’s Last Supper fresco from the wall of Milan’s Cenacolo would cost taxpayers millions“. How does it sound when a work of art is put on the same level as an act of vandalism? No taxpayer with a bit of brains would put the works of #Banksy at the same level as a graffiti depicting a crude dick. And yet this is how some press wants to depict them. As acts of vandalism that cost taxpayers money because of the costs to clean them up. Future historians and art critics will have no doubt on who was on the right side of history and art. https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/banksy-artwork-london-westminster-city-council-b3030315.html

The combination of widespread surveillance, ads-fuelled economy and AI has ushered an era of cross-pollinated monsters that defy even the imagination of the most creative Black Mirror writer. Beware of some cheap HDMI TV sticks (like the H96MAX Screencast). Gone are the “boring” days of TV sticks that would “just” scoop juicy data out of everything you watch on your TV. Nowadays, some TV sticks connect in the background to AI-generated websites and click on ads. Picture it like the perfect money printing machine. The effort of creating an AI-generated blog is basically zero. The effort of installing some custom Android TV image on a stock HDMI stick is also near zero in places like China. The effort of adding ads to your blog and funnel money back to you is also basically zero. Not only, but it looks like the ads were visible only when those pages were opened with the user agents used by the sticks. Which means that the businesses who paid to get their ads shown actually never got anyone to see them or click on them. They were included on a bunch of zombie AI blogs, visible only to a bunch of zombie TV sticks, and only clicked by those TV sticks. No humans in the loop, and a free fully automated money flow. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2026/07/read-this-before-you-buy-that-tv-streaming-stick/

@aiforests@mastodon.cloud @mina@berlin.social the user who shared the FBA link is not affiliated to us in any way. FBA itself is not a tool that suspends instances - it only periodically scrapes defederation statues and publishes them. Sure, I hate from the bottom of my heart the folks who built it (the Kiwifarms / FreeSpeechExtremist Nazis), but it doesn’t mean that the tool itself isn’t useful. Extremist instances (like mastodon.art) would however suspend you at first sight just for sharing a link to that website, but luckily other instance admins are not Talibans. That being said, saying “this person is not trustworthy because they’re on an instance blocked by some other instances” is a weak argument that I do not condone in any way.

There’s an uncomfortable tension between my employer supporting human rights through the Pride parade, to the point of being the top sponsor of it, while staunchly refusing to stop doing business with the illegal genocidal settlers in the West Bank. Perhaps doing the right thing in the West Bank doesn’t come with the same branding visibility as putting your logo everywhere on the Pride parade. Perhaps supporting LGBTQIA+ minorities in a liberal place like Amsterdam isn’t as controversial as rejecting doing business with the Zionazi settlers, thus enraging Israeli investors. This must stop now. Each single say that West Bank properties on stolen land are available on our website is another day of shame that we won’t recover from. Pressure on my employer must increase, and I will also support boycott acts. A company that truly supports the oppressed and wants to lower entry barriers does so every day and in every occasion. https://www.amnesty.nl/actueel/booking-com-trotse-sponsor-van-de-illegale-bezetting

📢 #GazaVerified archive updates I’ve dedicated a bit of time to fix a couple of issues on the gaza-verified archive as well as implement some long-standing feature requests. Filter out inactive accounts. As the initiative progressed, some accounts were suspended, deleted, moved or their instances were gone, but the list was never cleaned up. The archive API and the UI now expose a Hide Inactive filter that allows to easily filter out accounts that are permanently inactive. Note that inactive accounts are not deleted from the archive - they can just be filtered out. An account is marked as inactive when:It’s suspendedIt’s no longer available (deleted or moved)Its instance has not been reachable for at least 3 daysFilter out inactive campaigns. Fundraisers expire, or are deleted either by the campaign managers or the platforms. When it happens, it’s important to skip inactive campaigns from the list so donors won’t be overwhelmed by a long list of accounts on $0. Note: ?hide_inactive=true is now the new default for the archive API, which means that also the gaza-verified campaigns page will now hide inactive campaigns. @gaza_verified_campaigns@mastodon.social will also no longer report inactive campaigns, which should make the list clearer.Support for whydonate campaigns - thanks @raphaellakay@mastodon.world for pointing this out and thanks @davidculley@hachyderm.io for calling out some volunteers to help on this. The campaign of @sharifgaza@mastodon.social is now indexed on the archive. The only caveat is that the whydonate API doesn’t expose donation dates. The “scraping timestamp” is a good approximation, but this means that for the first scraping the amount collected this week will surely be higher than it actually is - basically all the donations made so far have been accounted as made today. This will be fixed when the counters reset next week.**Fixed “stuck” Chuffed campaigns - thanks again @raphaellakay@mastodon.world for pointing this out. Only one campaign was affected AFAIK (@naeemafamily@mastodon.social), and that should now be fixed. The issue was tricky to find and fix - it basically boils down to a corner case where the last saved page cursor points to a donation ID that has been removed in the meantime (Chuffed has a few of these glitches), corrupting the current state of that campaign on the archive. When it happens, now the whole campaign is simply re-synchronizing again from the first donation. As usual, the code for the gaza-verified archive is open, so feel free to contribute. @aral@mastodon.ar.al @gazaverified@mastodon.ar.al

📢 #GazaVerified campaigns communication @sabrinaweb71@sociale.network has not been reachable for more than a month. Unfortunately, she used to manage many fundraisers for #Gaza, which have all been unable to withdraw their donations for more than a month. Among those who have reached out to me in the past 2 weeks: @Hanan1991@mastodon.social @daliarezk@mastodon.social @saeeeed@mastodon.tn @heyamgaza@mastodon.social @haya200@mastodon.social @Layan2002@ieji.de If I’m missing anyone, please let me know. The purpose of this thread is to collect all the orphans from Sabrina and find new campaign managers for them. This is also an open call to new campaign managers. If you have always wondered how to concretely help people in Gaza, you may consider being a campaign manager. If you are interested and you would like to support, feel free to reach out to me. cc @gazaverified@mastodon.ar.al @fedipourgaza@eldritch.cafe @kathimmel@mstdn.social @raphaellakay@mastodon.world @duchesse@mastodon.online @delsaulnier@piaille.fr @DailyGaza@kolektiva.social @casey@kafeneio.social @aral@mastodon.ar.al

I am left with no option but to block those who send me requests of support under posts where I speak of something else. I love my friends in Gaza, and I’ll always do everything in my power to support them through the great injustices they’re going through. But I will no longer tolerate those who respond to every single post I write about something else asking me to support them. If you want to receive sustainable support, be also respectful of other people’s privacy and boundaries. This is my personal profile, and I’m a volunteer. It’s not a profile that I’m supposes to use only to support people in gaza-verified.

The #Netherlands will boycott #Eurovision for the second year in a row. Earlier this month, organisers announced they were excluding any country actively involved in an armed conflict from participating to the competition. With the exception, of course, of #Israel. Since repeatedly inviting baby killers is the perfect way to ruin a party, the Netherlands will no longer join the party. https://www.euronews.com/culture/2026/08/24/netherland-withdraws-from-2027-eurovision-song-contest-says-competition-no-longer-neutral

For any tut users out there (and if you are a terminal guy and you don’t know what it is, please go have a look): I’ve just pushed two features that may be useful: General purpose :search command, to forward search queries to the instance and return results (posts, hashtags, users…) in a new pane./ vi-like command to search within panes, allowing to quickly find e.g. notifications or posts by a certain user. I’m not sure of the current status of development of tut, since the last changes were pushed 3 years ago, so I’m not sure if/when these features will be merged upstream. But you can already build tut from my fork (dev branch), which already has the two features above, plus support for Markdown posts for Pleroma/Akkoma/Friendica instances. #Fedidev

@nada@manganiello.eu is trying to stand back on her feet, after the genocide in #Gaza has taken everything away from her multiple times. But it’s hard to stand back on your feet when your health keeps failing, and when even the means to take care of your body and its basic necessities are a luxury. A luxury often denied by a nearly collapsed healthcare system, and an embargo that puts many medications and healthy foods out of reach for many in #Palestine. She is (hopefully) in the final phases of her treatment, but she’s not out danger yet, and she still needs support to ensure that she has enough food, iron and vitamins to stay healthy. Even a small donation can go a long way. #MutualAid https://gofund.me/83e09b493 RE: https://manganiello.eu/objects/c6d5c8bb-338e-4886-8fc3-fc3b8db6febc

@macfranc@poliversity.it @elettrona@poliversity.it woaahhh, for a moment I was like “ok, the new release that fixes this macroscopic security issue is going to come soon, right?” But then I noticed this. The release 0.17, which includes the fix, as well as many of my fixes on the ActivityPub side (some of which I pushed in February 2025) has not even been released yet! So I guess that building the latest version from git should probably be the default to go, unless you want to use software that is almost 2 years old. @writefreely@writing.exchange could you please provide some context here? Is #WriteFreely even still being actively developed? It took me time to fix stuff on the codebase, and I even signed off the CLA (no matter how much I hate that stuff). Efforts of contributors should not be wasted on a project that seems dead from any perspective you look at it. If WriteFreely is dead, then please state so clearly so we can start working on alternative blogging platforms. I was even thinking of implementing support for the Mastodon quote protocol like I did on Madblog and Akkoma, but I guess that I’ll see those changes shipped perhaps in 2030. I don’t want to be the guy who pulls water to his own side - also because Madblog doesn’t yet support multiuser scenarios, nor authentication, nor an editor, and I don’t want to rush on it. I still advise folks to use WriteFreely if they want those features. But seeing a project in this state, and which doesn’t even prioritize a security fix that basically prevents random spammers from polluting any blog…jeez, I don’t feel like I can any longer advise this project to anyone.

@divya@sunny.garden there are very few employment opportunities unfortunately in Gaza itself (meaning “on contract with an employer”). But several UN agencies are slowly trying to put together some programs for enterpreneurs to help kickstart something that resembles a local industry again. An example: https://www.syfpal.org/ar/post/183 I think that the best at this moment is to get in touch with UN representatives on the ground, as they have more insights into which programs are being opened.

Elon Musk’s definition of “open source” is interesting - but in line with what I’d expect from a man who knows nearly nothing about engineering. He announced that #Tesla would open source their Model S and Model X. I hope that the release will be better than the one Tesla made for the Roadster model. Because, after Musk said that Tesla would have released “_all design & engineering of the original Tesla Roadster - whatever we have, you now have”, they ended up publishing a repository only with: The .dbc database filesA diagnostic ISO No source code, no blueprints, no CAD files, no bill of materials, no firmware source, no schematics, no motor design, no pack design. Also, note that Tesla would be compelled to open source anyway parts of its software. It was already force to comply in 2018. Tesla cars run Linux, and the GPL license prevents Tesla from modifying the kernel without releasing the modifications. Tesla complied by open-sourcing its kernel fork, but even that repo hasn’t seen any activity in more than 2 years.

@njalla@njalla.social are you aware of any #SSH crawlers lurking for public IPs on your #VPN? Because I’ve noticed a lot of suspicious lines in my system logs when I connect from my laptop to your VPN. Clues: No other system in my networks experiences such SSH scans (and my laptop is the only one that runs Njalla VPN).My laptop has no publicly exposed IP that could justify its SSH port to be reachable from the outside - only the Njalla VPN interface. When I take Njalla down, the scans also stop. Could you please take a closer look at your infra and check that enumeration of connected clients for unauthorized actors is not allowed, or that at the very least such abuses are treated appropriately?

#Italy has a long-standing issue with private ownership of beaches. In some locations, up to 80-90% of the beaches are privately owned. If you want to go to the seaside, you pay a fee to the owner of the facility (“lido”) and then you can access the beach. When the phenomenon started, the Italian State used to assign licenses to develop seaside facilities to private owners, who were in turn allowed to charge people for the access to the sea in order to fund further development. Slowly, the lack of regulation and the lobbying from a newly born wealthy class caused the situation to escalate. Licenses turned into de facto lifetime concessions. They could be sold by the owner to someone else, like a regular real estate asset, as if the owner had actually originally paid someone to own a public beach. Predicably, “lido” owners soon started creating their own cartels and synchronized price hikes. Lobbying slowly caused a large share of the Italian beaches to become private, with unaccountable owners who could extract as much revenue as they liked from anyone who just wanted to enjoy the sea on a warm day. The issue is well-known and the national government has been trying to address it for years, failing every time because the interests of a tiny lobby (with some of them who also became MPs or government members in the meantime) apparently can win over the interests of millions. Josi Della Ragione, the young mayor of #Bacoli, a seaside village near Naples where access to nearly 90% of the beaches is behind a fee, has taken the battle on a personal level, and soon most beach owners in the locality may see their licenses revoked and most of the beach become public again. The clash between the mayor and the private owners has also highlighted the selfishness and detachment from the world of any class of “new riches”. Infamously, the owner of one of the largest “lido” remarked that the mayor “loves penniless people”. Something that you could have imagined Marie Antoinette say before her head was chopped off. As if the right for locals to access a public beach was to be awarded only to wealthy individuals happy to part with their money whenever they want to take their children to the sea, and everyone else could either go to overcrowded tiny beaches with free access, or stay at home. Beaches, parks, water, railways, the IT infrastructure itself, are all crucial components of a healthy State, funded by taxpayers, and fair access to them should hence be granted to all of its citizens without barriers. Private leasing can be temporarily granted through time-bound licenses, with clear expectations about how the beneficiary can enhance the public resource for the public good in a way that taxpayers alone can’t do. But those must be leasing licenses - not ownership licenses. Their time and scope must be limited - at no point those licenses should result in most of the resources being privately owned and in new permanent access barriers being created for the majority of the citizens, who should not be asked to pay twice for the same thing. And those licenses cannot be extended nor sold, for the same reason why sub-leasing publicly awarded licenses is usually illegal. Without these constraints, capitalism always predictably degenerates towards the establishment of new unaccountable oligarchies. Without these constraints, new unaccountable wealthy classes increasingly detached from reality will keep popping up. https://www.rainews.it/articoli/2026/07/il-sindaco-risponde-al-gestore-del-lido-che-lo-accusa-di-amare-i-pezzenti-si-spiaggia-libera-f1a14c73-5849-4871-b3d8-ed902536c054.html

Whoever wrote the July 4th speech for #Trump retained some memory of an ancient American rhetorical tradition. Like the aging actress Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, Trump and his writing team replayed favorite scenes: the liberation of Europe from Nazi rule, the defeat of communism. And, as with the actress, those scenes—once so powerful—have become poignant, because they took place so long ago, and the actress has since then lost her stardom and been forgotten. Under Donald Trump, the United States has fought military conflicts in Venezuela and Iran. They nearly fought a war with Denmark to seize Greenland. They often speaks of annexing all or part of Canada. They have waged economic war on allies and partners in violation of international trade agreements and domestic law. Soon the United States may be engaged in a war in Cuba. Already, the U.S. has cut back aid to Ukraine as that country fights for its survival and freedom. Trump has repeatedly made clear that the goal of his wars is plunder: that he wishes to seize oil and other resources. In turn, the course of his most ambitious war, with Iran, appears to have been swayed by client states (#Israel), which have made payments to him and his associates and simply want the highest unconditional returns from America. An American president bullied by a small country like Israel says a lot about his actual political influence. Trump’s preferred rhetorical style on such occasions is to brag about the strength of the U.S. military, how nobody can equal it, how it crushes all before it. He reportedly tells his inner circle that he personally is a more powerful warlord than Attila the Hun or Genghis Khan. The authentic Trump does not care about any ideals beyond national fearsomeness and personal enrichment. But somebody got some ill-remembered fragments from the Before Times about freedom onto Trump’s teleprompter—and on this unusual occasion, Trump read the fragments without balking. Americans are accustomed to those fragments. When Trump rejects them, as he usually does, Trump’s domestic audiences may feel uneasy that something has been omitted that used to be important. But when Trump pronounces them, as he did on July 4th, he reminds his global audience how he has jettisoned the generous principles and emancipatory ideals that once made America not only feared but trusted and admired. Trump’s speech demanded credit for a history that Trump regards as a sucker’s mistake. Trump is building an American future oriented toward authoritarian and corrupt states: Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia. Democratic allies are treated, at best, as subjects to be bullied and, at worst, as targets to be carved up into new American territories. To the extent the decision is up to Trump, the United States that his speech celebrated on July 4 will exist no more. Trump’s grotesque botch of the 250th anniversary of “We hold these truths” aptly demonstrates how far his leadership has already pushed the United States away from its noblest past. Americans may not wish to acknowledge what Trump has done to their standing in the world. Such denial does not change reality. Norma Desmond’s last lover—and doomed narrator—delivers a verdict on the fading star’s descent from delusion into madness: “The dream she had clung to so desperately had enfolded her.” #USPol https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/07/trump-july-4/687811/

@mina@berlin.social @aral@mastodon.ar.al @Pyrogenesis@mefi.social I’m talking as someone who is in regular contact (daily or weekly) with at least a dozen of families in Gaza, and has learned a lot about how some things work down there. Still, what I’m going to say is not information I gathered myself, because I’m not in Gaza myself - but after hearing similar things from many families it starts to sound plausible. Hamas mostly works underground and in secrecy. Even families of the militants aren’t allowed to contact them amid fears of disclosing any details about their whereabouts or their structure. Given the risks involved for Hamas to reach out to civilians directly and transfer funds with them, there’s literally no reason to believe that any militant with a bit of brains would do that in exchange for… I don’t know, $100/week? Terrorist organizations like Hamas need much bigger funding for their activities (gunpowder, drones and heavy artillery aren’t cheap), and it’s very unlikely that they’d take the risk of raising that money from campaigns that barely raise enough to pay for basic items of food - especially when that comes with the risk of disclosing details about them. Plus, after talking to many of our friends I sense an almost universal sense of antipathy (ranging from mistrust to hate) for Hamas. Most of them blame Hamas as much as the Zionist terrorists for destroying their lives. Additionally, take into account that these platforms (especially GoFundMe) by now run extensive KYC checks both against beneficiaries and campaign managers. I know because I’ve been asked to provide a lot of personal information also for the campaigns I run. And they match that information against Worldcheck and other databases of known organizations or politically exposed people. If there was a case of affiliation with Hamas, it would have probably come out by now. That being said, I’m not saying that Hamas doesn’t use fundraisers at all. There were arrests in Italy some months ago because it turned out that some campaigns were actually financing the Italian cell of Hamas. But the patterns were very different: Campaigns were mostly anonymous and with no social media accounts linked The amounts raised were huge and suspicious There was no verification/vetting process p.s. I’m talking as a volunteer in gaza-verified, but not in Aral’s name or the initiative’s name, of course.
