Two tiny things I've started doing since the heatwaves became social small talk. I use the phrase 'climate collapse'. Klimakollaps. Not climate change. When anyone moans about the heat in isolation, as if it's just a rare hot day today, I mention the death toll and wonder aloud: 'What are we going to do about climate collapse?' Just to bring it into the conversation. I know it's very Old Woman Yells At Climate Collapse. But it's just weird that we refuse to even mention it. #ClimateDiary

Some brave baby out there just gave up all eight of their soothers all at once. Quitting their pacifiers cold turkey. I am sparing a thought for them tonight. And for their parent or parents or anyone within earshot of them.

I was mesmerised by this celtic war trumpet, but even more mesmerised when I saw a video of someone playing it. Until I heard it, I'd have assumed it made a monotone bellow. But the carnyx played varied, lighter notes. It sounded musical. Which somehow made the thought even more terrifying, of being gathered around the fire, telling stories one Iron Age night, and suddenly you hear this beautiful sinister music in the dark air, telling you a horde of Celtic warriors are about to attack.

Changed behaviours and heat-resistance tactics will differ, of course, depending where you live. Other everyday differences I've noticed in heated-up Denmark: Municipal signs at outdoor events reminding people to drink water Instead of the usual Summer tank tops & shorts, people covering up in floaty long and long-sleeved clothing. In our walkable city, zig-zagging home, changing sides of the street with the trees, taking the route with most building shadow at that time of day #ClimateDiary

This is the Dar Szczecina, sailing out of Aarhus in the Tall Ships parade, being waved off by thousands. Just as it reached open sea, the Mission Impossible music started playing on board. As the crowds laughed and cheered, the young crew lined up on deck and did a joyous choreographed dance, mimicking rope-hauling, making moves to the Mission Impossible beat. This flat unmoving picture shares none of that. I wish I could convey it, because for that joyful moment, all was right with the world.

I am starting to tire of people making mention of climate collapse seem like a mood killer and social faux pas. We're going to tone-police ourselves and the planet to death, all because those of us in the 10% don't want to feel guilty about all the city-break flights and consumer goods. #ClimateDiary

I don’t often shop in this shopping centre. I had to find a specific shop so went to look it up on the giant You Are Here poster map with a store index. They’ve replaced it with a giant touch-screen you have to operate, clicking in & out of pages while the nearest 107 people follow along. Probably shows ads too. (I didn’t use it.) A waste of time. A waste of the customer’s and planet’s energy. The poster map was at-a-glance simple. It worked for decades. Such a stupid case of #enshittification.

Empty pavement tables in the afternoon. Busy tables inside. People recommending the museum’s concrete underground Skyspace dome because it’s cool in both senses. The new small talk: salads or spicy food, tea or cold drinks? (Tea. Curry. Obviously.) Wanting a bike helmet with in-built sun hat. The strong scent of flowers filling the air on streets where there were always flowers, but they gave off no scent in older, lower temperatures. @IcooIey@mastodon.green Well said and well put. And seconded! This often strikes me, how good people on Mastodon are at noticing things. Like, the little things - someone shared a photo of a snail on a pavement the other day because they'd noticed the snail's trail had drawn a perfect wee heart. A tiny detail many would not have noticed in passing. I appreciate all my neighbours in the Fediverse who brighten my day with unsung 'little' things in the world that they notice and share.

Umbrellas as parasols in the audience at outdoor events. Fewer guests because of the heat. People huddling together in a single small patch of shade, farther from the stage than they'd like to be. We're like those sheep in that photo of them lined up in the thin shadow of a wind turbine. A rain umbrella with the logo Normal. I once saw an ad for a reality tv show starring a couple with a Hollywood home. They were arguing about whether you need to wash new sheets before use. They were filmed while she stuffed newly-washed sheets into the tumble dryer. It stuck with me because I thought: you live in California, why are you using a tumble dryer? I recalled it today when a sheets-and-towels wash dried outside in just a few hours. I'm trying not to think: well at least extreme heat is good for something. #ClimateDiary

Mastocatastrophizing. When you worry about posting a photo because you’re afraid you’ll misuse a beloved hashtag. Like, is this #LichenSubscribe? Or #Mosstodon? And is that a window? Are we allowed toot windows when it’s not Friday?

They say humans develop Theory of Mind around the age of four or five, but I still get surprised when some reference reminds me that the rest of you are not looking at the same toots and timeline as me.

In casual social small talk, especially in general social situations rather than longer conversations with personal friends, I would just like to see the word 'crisis' and the topic generally brought into the conversation. It's being deliberately (as I believe) ignored, so even before the nuances, it'd be a start to see it talked about socially at all.

I'm being scolded for using the word anyway. I genuinely don't know how to decode this. Mid-afternoon, mid-city, the middle of the Summer holidays. This is usually one of the most bustling streets in the city centre. Always lots of people walking around, parking bikes, waiting to meet someone, cycling by, window-shopping, standing while doing something on their phone, hanging out, going in and out of the busy supermarket. Unsettling to see it almost deserted, the few people around all walking in the thin line of shadow on one side of the street. #ClimateDiary#Aarhus

In the specific case of the toot I got scolded for, there was a photo of the cigarettes and I added a footnote for anyone who didn't know the local usage, so I had hoped that would preclude problems. An interesting situation, at least - it made me think about the linguistic etiquette of such regional usages and people have shared fine input. Thanks for yours.

I suppose if stonework absolutely must make an eerie ghostly face peer out at you from the dark, then a church crypt from the year 1060 is the right place to do it
