I work in tech: unix (any) sysadmin. One of those weirdos that actively likes managing DNS - if you say "It's always DNS," I'm looking for a new job, consider hiring me and then it won't be. I also enjoy running SMTP servers so clearly something is wrong with me.

Has been mentioned in Ars Technica and had ideas ripped off by Cloudflare.

@wokerati@mastodon.social @benroyce@mastodon.social Every single voter that shows up in a primary addresses the problem of left candidates not being on the ballot. When they stop seeing primaries as actual campaigns and not a check box or victory lap, we will get there, and fast. And the way to do that? Get those most skeptical, most cynical, to just show up for once. Every percentage point they don't get hardens their spine against Trump regardless of where they get their campaign money.

@susankayequinn Reminds me of farmers near small/midsized cities in the US Midwest opposing wind turbines: They could lease the land the turbine stands on for far more than the price of the crops that would grow on the tiny footprint, and still have a large field to keep farming those crops. Win/win. But would oppose, because they were close enough to an urban area, they were hoping to sell the field to a property developer to build suburban sprawls of houses. Turbines would force that land to stay a farm forever and not a one time huge cash payout.

@hhardy01@mastodon.social Every time I say "Europeans, and the northern European countries in particular, seem to be doing a great job taking care of their citizens, maybe there's something we could learn from them" immediately people bring up racism exactly like this. The complaint comes from left, right, and political center, and instantly. But we have that problem too! We have hundreds of years of racism and genocide, still mostly unresolved. I don't understand how so many of my fellow citizens won't even consider the possibility that there might be a better way to do things, and why the argument against looking outwards is always the darkest part of our history. @janeishly@beige.party

@druid Okay so: A) they are wasting their resources slurping down bullshit they will later discard, raising their costs and slowing their acquisition if other people's content, or B) they are slurping down bullshit that's statistically close enough to valid text, which is what markov models do, and train on it - damaging their model. Neither of these scenarios benefit them. For me it's a net win either way. And then there's the fact I've identified their crawlers by their behavior, in real time, and can spread that information so people can just block them outright. @nu@ak.pinegrove.xyz There used to be Freshmeat.net, which was originally release announcements/software project news. It was also so successful, it quickly became a somewhat of a central encyclopedia/searchable listing of actively maintained open source software. Just about everything was on it. Then suddenly every project started using Sourceforge, to the point users overwhelmingly looked there first. Traffic on Freshmeat declined so dramatically the owner shut it down. Sometime after that Github happened. @ploum@mamot.fr

So Linus showed his entire ass ( again, if you've been paying attention in the last twenty years, but for some reason this one really got noticed ), and now I keep seeing people talking about building weird #NetBSD / Debian hybrids, how Devuan was trying that, and You know you can just run NetBSD right? No need to loot it for replacement parts, it's a stable modern OS that works fine exactly as it is. Putting the GNU userland on top of it will be a lot of work to catch up with what it already is, and carries the reward of having Richard Stallman's slime on everything.

@RichardJActon@fosstodon.org In my experience, an SD card at end of life is unable to be written to, but the data is still recoverable. The times I've had a phone's flash wear out left it in a factory reset state, everything gone, and stuck in a reboot loop. Pushing the heavy written app data ( camera, map tiles, etc ) to the SD card significantly extends the phone's lifetime as well. Of course, backups. Many things on my phone ( contacts, mail ) are backed by self hosted services, but several ( camera, mapping app ) are not. SD card helps a lot here: simply put said SD card in a USB reader I keep for such purposes, rsync, put it back in the phone. Most phones I've owned included the Micro-SD card slot in the same tray as SIM card. Some could even use that second tray location as a second SIM. I'm baffled why Google won't include something so useful in their high end expensive flagship devices when it needs such a small increase in space and cost - Unless, of course, they are doing it to force dependency on their cloud services and increase vendor lock-in.

@contrasocial @GrapheneOS Yes, this. I'm also not particularly interested in running a Pixel device but for different reasons: I need an SD card slot ( running Cloud-nothing means I need storage that can survive the phone's flash dying. And yes, I've had that happening, lost a lot of stuff that way. ) I also need a physical headphone jack ( playing music while also navigating is a huge help on the long road trips I frequently do. ) I will not consider anything that can't meet those requirements. Lineage, and previously Cyanogen, on Motorola or Sony devices has been meeting my needs since 2014 without fail. If Graphene can support hardware that meets those needs I'll consider it. Until then, it isn't helpful.

*KICKS DOOR DOWN*

Hey everyone! Hate AI web crawlers? Have some spare CPU cycles you want to use to punish them?

Meet Nepenthes!

https://zadzmo.org/code/nepenthes

This little guy runs nicely on low power hardware, and generates an infinite maze of what appear to be static files with no exit links. Web crawlers will merrily hop right in and just .... get stuck in there! Optional randomized delay to waste their time and conserve your CPU, optional markovbabble to poison large language models.

It can be transformed into something more usable later.
