Uke-player, busker, from Notts, UK, trying to make sense of the mess of capitalist colonialist billionaire-producing shitshow that the UK / world has become. Trying to be green, but still having to balance that with practical home budget. Christian, which is where a lot of my philosophy starts from, but try to be inclusive and helpful. Work as a bus driver, generally schools. Unsolicited duck pics / other animal pics welcome.

@Ronnie@mastodon.social Think that's about the amount of attention famous people generally deserve. Now if one of you was getting married and decided to share that with us, I would be more interested - a person I interact with is fundamentally more important to me.

@parismarx@mastodon.online I'm sure that his comments are illegal in many jurisdictions, but I also know that he can afford lawyers to draw out a case for a very long time. Threats of murder from anyone else would land the person in real trouble in most countries, but we now have people who not only think they are above the law, they know it, because they have bought off the governments and politicians.

@dropbear@aus.social It matters to those who are adherents of a religion, too. If you consider yourself to be a Christian, but haven't darkened the threshold of a church for twenty years (and don't have an accessibility or other good reason why you haven't), you are probably not a Christian, and definitely not a good one.

@RaffKarva@sunny.garden @janeishly@beige.party You could argue that the length of tenure of your account proves you are an adult, if that's what it's about. The 'money-laundering' issue doesn't wash either, because they already know your bank account details from way back. Ask them why they need to compromise your government document privacy and security by allowing them (or someone else?) to hold a copy of your passport. The questions probably won't help, but this needs to publicised more widely.

For a start, nobody really believes that machines, algorithms or tools are really sentient beings (as far as I can see, the only ones who claim that are the notorious liars who actually make the tools and a few people who are of sub-par intelligence who have been duped by their marketing), or in any meaningful sense, 'intelligent'. So, we shouldn't use the term at all. Call them slopbots, slop distributors.

@howking@mastodonczech.cz @jmopp@masto.ai @maxleibman@beige.party I wondered when someone would say that. Saying something is 'here to stay' is not an argument for adopting it. I can remember when loads of other technologies were 'here to stay', and then the early adopters got burnt, or even everyone got burnt (eg. P2000 video, asbestos...). Nazism was here to stay in 1930s Germany (and yes, it is relevant, considering who is funding and profiting from LLMs)

@Rojertb@mastodon.scot I wondered at what level of corruption FIFA had to get to before any other organisation had to refuse to deal with them. It's not financial corruption, it's not sucking up to countries that are not particularly into football and don't have the climate for it at the right time of year for the world cup, it's not even breaking the rules because a politician intervenes in the middle of a tournament, it's not even deliberately trying to fix the match against enemy teams. This is the level?

@akareilly@hachyderm.io What SHOULD happen is that the programmer writes the documentation, and then gives it to a completely non-techie person and watch ON CAMERA as they try to work out what to do. Only then will they realise that what is obvious to them, on their computer running the latest hardware and software, isn't the amazing thing they thought it was when run by a non-tech person on an ageing, not-quite-up-to-date, not backed-up home computer with limited memory.

@david_megginson@mstdn.ca uke players are worse, in my experience. Although they're not at such high tension, and are either fluorocarbon or nylon, and therefore break very rarely, some players I have met have been playing 5 years or more and NEVER changed them from the stock ones that were on when bought. As soon as the strings are pitting where they hit the frets, they need replacing.

@emd@cosocial.ca You could just pull up an area of grass and leave it fallow, with occasional water, and see what turns up - the only things that will grow will either be seeded from other nearby gardens, or from the countryside. Depends how near you are to a wild area, though.

These are the two things that Americans (and the rest of the world, mainly as copycats) need to address. Walking, hiking, public transport, sustainable and walkable/bikeable cities, infrastructure that works for all, not just car-drivers.

@kibcol1049@mstdn.social The best thing to do if you do more than splash a mobile phone is: 1. Turn it OFF immediately. Any damage caused by water is often caused AFTER the event as the water goes through powered electronics. 2. Remove from any case or holder & open every hole or cover you easily can. You could even take it to a repairer to open up more. Leave it 24 hours or more to thoroughly dry it (on a sunny windowsill or warm radiator may help). As a fairphone owner, I could remove the back and battery.

@verdantsquare@mastodon.world I still can't understand WHY they've done this. 1. It's not as if Bayeux is difficult to get to from the UK. 2. The potential for damage or vandalism in taking it out of its temperature- and humidity-controlled environment for transport (both ways) is significant. 3. If you really can't get to see the original, an old copy has been on display in Reading for years, made by some needle workers from Leek, iirc.

@danmccullough@ecoevo.social If you actually want wild flowers in your garden, then you have to treat it as a wild nature sanctuary (for up to a decade) and they naturally appear. Some long-lived seeds may well have been dormant in the soil waiting for the right conditions. Others will be spread by wildlife, and the lack of pesticides and excessive tidying that many people indulge in, will encourage natural fauna and flora. My parents lawn has native local wildflowers in, only took 10 years without pesticides
